This is a comprehensive and scholarly book on Brochs, dry stone fortified towers only found in Scotland, mostly in the Northern Higlands and the island grroups of the Hebridies, Orkneys and Shetlands, and all now ruined to varying degrees. It is well illustrated with 53 b/w photos and diagrams and a fine group of 23 colour photos. There is a well-notated Bibliography, a list of the better preserved Brochs with OS Map references and brief descriptions, and an Index. Brochs are an obscure show more topic, little known outside the UK, but this is a valuable guide to the subject for beginners to partial specialists. show less
This for the traveler who wants to see Scotland's early history. This book directs you to the areas of Scotland's roots. The history of the land before it became Scotland. It's a very good guide by region to where and how to see and discover the earliest of archaeological discoveries in Scotland. Great to plan a early history tour of Scotland. This is not the guide to Braveheart's Scotland but of his possible ancestors.
