This is what the title says--an encyclopedia--so you won't get a narrative of the history of photography. But the entries are to the point and address the basics. The choice of illustrations is odd though--it seems like the editors wanted to avoid the same old photos used in every other history of photography book, which is refreshing in a way, but then you read some of the entries and look at the photos and think, they chose this photo to include??
Does what its title says: a good overview of the MoMA's photography department, from its origins up until today. Reproductions are ok, some essays are quite useful.
The Magnum Photos agency commissioned ten of its photographers (Carl de Keyzer, Martine Franck, Alex Majoli, Peter Marlow, Martin Parr, Mark Power, Chris Steele-Perkins, Lise Sarfati, Donovan Wylie, Patrick Zachmann) to take the portrait of the ten countries that joined the European Union in 2004.
