This is a good biography because it describes the life of the Afro-American who changed agriculture in the South. He pursued his dream of education in the post-slavery era and worked serve society until his death.
I would use this book when discussing post slavery and how difficult it was for black people to get education, especially in the South
I would also use this book if the class was doing a plant/farm unit.
Genre: Biography
Media: Mixed,
Little did I know, when I read this story in the Reader's Digest when I was about 10, just how beloved this story would become. Or that leukemia would become treatable by blood transplants from siblings or strangers with blood matches. Or that this would happen in my own immediate family.
A simple human interest story and sweet; maybe out of date now because of medical advances. But one I'll never forget.
