About the Author
Paul Sabatier (1858-1928), a French Protestant and the first modern biographer of St. Francis, sought to find the man beneath the layers of myth and legend. Sabatier portrayed a fully human Francis, much like each of us in our awkwardness, insecurities, and fear, but also a gentle mystic and show more passionate reformer who desired to live as Jesus taught his disciples show less

Short review of Francis' life and the major events which shaped his quest to live out the Gospel of Jesus of Nazareth. Written by a non-Catholic but with a background in history, Sabatier captures the intent of Francis with a strange slant critiquing the Institutional church. Francis never did this. Useful as a Protestant perspective on Francis as a reformer, which is accurate. The Introduction states that this work placed on the Roman Index of forbidden books which Catholics could not read show more openly. Glossary, Sources, Recommended Reading. I have read a few biographies on St Francis. Each one sheds some interesting detail that other biographers have missed. He has always interested me. I think it is a must read for anyone interested in his life.
"First published in 1894, with the first English-language edition appearing in 1906, this was the first modern biography of Saint Francis of Assisi, the 13th-century Roman Catholic monk and founder of the Order of Friars Minor, known as the Franciscans. A bestseller in its time, and ultimately translated into 55 languages, this work by French clergyman, historian, and theologian Paul Sabatier (1858-1928) tells the story of the monk's life in clear, sympathetic language, from his youth and show more conversion to his suffering of stigmata in later years, with a special emphasis on his kind heart and the love of nature and animals that has made him beloved to Christians." - from a poster on Amazon show less
