Julien Green (1900–1998)
Author of God's Fool: The Life of Francis of Assisi
About the Author
Julien Green, who writes in French, was born in Paris of American parents. He spent his childhood in France, returning to the United States only to study at the University of Virginia and to serve in both world wars. American life is the background for his two novels, Mont-Cinere (1926) and Mo'ra show more (1950). French provincial life is the setting for Adrienne Mesurat (The Closed Garden) (1927), and also for Leviathan (The Dark Journey) (1929). Each in His Darkness (1961) is a novel about a Frenchman and his dying uncle in America. In his diary, Julien Green reveals his "sensitive, poetic nature" and provides insights into the obsessive, nightmarish atmosphere of his works, as well as into the major conflicts of his life---Catholicism versus Protestantism, and "the struggle between spiritual energy and sensual emotion" (Justin O'Brien, SR). In intermingling biography and lore, culture and history, and sympathy with academic examination, Green accomplished a beautiful and impressive biography of Francis of Assisi. In short straight-forward chapters, Green examines Francis' short life, from beginning to end, bringing to life the world he lived in at the beginning of the thirteenth century. The end result is a beautiful examination of a man and his belief--not only in God, but in the wonder of the world around him and in the show more goodness of people. More related to simple goodness than to religion, the book explores what belief means by centering on the transformation that occurred in Francis' life, and whether the book finds readers who believe or disbelieve in the possibility of miracles, it will find a way to touch the spirit of any reader through this straight-forward and careful depiction.
Touching, smart, and detailed, this book is, very simply, worth reading.

A novella of poetic vignettes, I had to be in the right mood to enjoy these. In the right frame of mind, they're romantic, nostalgic and evocative. In the wrong frame, they sound like a fatuous elitist wailing about beautiful buildings being torn down for the vulgar reason of improving the lives of Paris' inhabitants.
Elisabeth, a tizenegy éves kis hölgy egy családi tragédia folytán három nagynénjére lesz bízva, akikhez képest Macbeth boszorkányai random Disney-hercegnőknek tűnnek. Mesteri az is, ahogy a kastély lakóit elrendezi a ház ura, a rejtélyes Edme úr körül, aki láthatatlanul is irányítja pályájukat, valahogy úgy, ahogy a nap irányítja a bolygók keringését. Olvasásra érdemes francia klasszikus a XX. század első feléből.

This is a book of reminiscences of Julian Green's life in Paris. Green was an American who lived almost his entire life in Paris, and did serve on the Académie Française. This book is bilingual, with Green writing in French and the translation handled by J. A. Underwood. The book reflects Green's love of Paris and has a beautiful visual sense to it. Black and white photographs taken by the author help illustrate the book. There are chapters with themes as Green 'strolls' through the city show more reflecting on what he sees. He joins historical references with apt descriptions, and his feeling of the area. One might see these as random jottings, but they always seem engrossing. I read this at the same time as Georges Perec's "An Attempt at Exhausting a Place in Paris." Perec confines himself to the district around St-Sulpice, whereas Green wanders everywhere. But both cast their eyes on things that we casual observers would miss and they round out our experience of Paris. I did find that the French frequently read better than the English, but I am not fluent in French, and mostly read the English. This is a book for anyone who wants a more rounded look at Paris than a travel book could give. show less
