WOW. The Cured smacks of realism that is truly terrifying. Nanotechnology. Weapons of mass destruction. Greed. Abuse of power. Conspiracy. Rogue government agents. The characters are to be loved and hated. I love that the characters traverse the spectrum of humanity. Those that feel entitled and let their corruption run rampant, to those who will sacrifice their life to do the right thing. The story centers around the Kira’s family. She and her brother are a genius and on the run from show more those who wish to use them or kill them. Jeremy, a complete stranger feels a need to help them. He had suffered a crippling loss. Will this be the road to a new life for him? I love diverse characters. We have a lesbian with a cameo part and a boy who has Asperger Syndrome and went into a deep depression when his mother died. I will surely be looking for more books by David Wind and Terese Ramin.

Born to Magic presents a very different world from our own, where magic has a logic given to women, and a pre-industrial America has well-defined rules and laws governing kingdoms, kings and queens. But it wasn’t always so. These kingdoms warred incessantly before the new leader arrived and changed everything. Of course, the reader asks what happened before that – how did America become a land of kingdoms? And for this, the author presents intriguing hints that provide enough information show more without ever giving too much.

Author David Wind presents a fascinating future history very naturally in this tale, blending magic and science with touches of sociology and present day danger. He pulls the reader in with well-timed mystery and revelation, amuses with nicely futuristic words and idioms, and adds a fascinating dual sense of dangers past and present.

As the first book in the series, Born to Magic introduces an captivating culture, peopled with enjoyable characters. The magical Areena and the man she might learn to love make convincing protagonists that readers easily learn to care about. Hints of Star Wars blend with Shannara perhaps, and the result is nicely individual, futuristic, fascinating, and very well-told. Highly recommended.

I read the first book of the Tales of Nevaeh, Born to Magic and gave it 5 Stars in my review. When David Wind released The Dark Masters, I had to buy it! Like its predecessor, it was a great read!

Synopsis (from the author): Across the sea, the sorcerers known as the Dark Masters, launch a fleet of ships with tens of thousands of warriors. In Nevaeh, charged with an epic journey, Areenna and Mikaal, armed only with their psychic abilities, their swords and Areenna's bow, must travel to the show more desolate Frozen Mountains. There, in the unchartered dangerous region, they must discover not just the legends, but the millennia old secret awaiting them in their fight to save Nevaeh from extermination.

What I liked: David Wind has created an interesting future world where women have magic, men have battle skills, and the animals are mutated versions of current creatures. I enjoyed the way our heroes bonded with their animal friends and how the animals shared power and abilities with them. The battle scenes are well done, and I think the Sixes are cool! Interspersed in the story is the growing attraction between Areenna and Mikaal and their battle to keep it at bay. I also liked the overall theme of the battle between good and evil, and the surprising twist in the mountains was a nice touch!

What I didn’t like: About the only criticism I have is I thought more could have been done to explore the people Areenna and Mikaal met as they journeyed to the mountains. I’m sure it will be a part of the next book, though, so my questions will be answered!

Overall impression: As with the first book, this was an excellent read! Filled with memorable characters, excellent battle scenes, and intrigue and romance, I would recommend The Dark Masters to any fantasy fan! Well done, David Wind!!

My rating: 5 Stars!!

I love the cover for the amazing adventure I had with Areena and Mikaal. The world David created is vividly detailed, filled with creatures, magic, evil, love and hope. Taking place in the future, sparks of our possible reality mesh seamlessly with the magical world. The danger is not over, but this adventure finished with a happy ending. I am curious about their next adventure, and hope to be there for it.
