The Story of Our Churches and Cathedrals is a lovely overview of English ecclesiastical architecture. Aimed at children, it provides clear descriptions of the various building styles from Saxon to today (c. 1964). It is a perfect introduction to the subject for anyone looking for an accessible overview, whether young in body or young at heart. And the illustrations are attractive enough to lure even those who don't see much fun in learning about the three English Gothic styles.
Daddy bought this copy for Nicola, for persevering in learning to ride her bike in September/October 1961. She should have spent her time looking at steam engines. There is a great illustration of a diesel Warship, 'Avenger, hauling one of Britain's fastest trains, the Bristolian', page 49
This book tells of man's achievements in underwater exploration and travel. With clear text and superb colour illustrations it describes the world under the sea, the early divers and gradual development of diving helmets, suits and other equipment, the invention of the submarine and the latest devices for exploring at great depths.
Pages 48-52 cover diesel and electric trains, two pages of text and three colour images, one 'an artist's impression of the Advanced Passenger Train at speed'.
