– Booklist

“The Silent Places” by James Patrick Hunt:

John Reese has a personal vendetta against presidential candidate Senator Alan Preston, and why not, Preston had him thrown in jail on trumped-up charges.

Reese—a former CIA agent—was in jail for life on charges of treason when he was released into the custody of Federal agents. Not taking his moment of freedom lightly, Reese evades his captors to make his way to Missouri at the time Senator Preston is due to give a national speech.

St. Louis show more police detective George Hastings takes it personally when you commit a crime in his jurisdiction and he is on the security detail guarding the senator. As he digs into the background of both the hunter and the hunted he begins to realize that perhaps things are not quite what they seem. Who is the criminal?

With an ending that turns your understanding of everything you just read upside down, Hunt keeps readers enthralled until the last bullet.

Excellent thriller. Character of Kurt Miller is just fantastic - person devoted to his country, highly professional and aware of internal games played in the shadowy corridors of power. But then he gets betrayed by his country's close allies and jailed for a year and half on false charges. This might not be much by someones standards but when you do it to a man who takes integrity very seriously you have made a serious mistake.

Writer gives a good comparison of political demagogues - they are show more same in any time, be it WW1, WW2 or today. And their ability to hypnotize the masses is as terrifying as ever.

Highly recommended.

Lieutenant Hastings has to figure out who kidnapped a billionaire's daughter for ransom, who also killed her boyfriend. Very few clues to go on in the beginning, but then some clues lead to a break in the case. Good plot and descriptive characters, but too much filthy language that doesn't add to the story. I also like reading about places I know in the St. Louis area.
