This one's a little biography of Christopher Columbus, written for middle school students. It focuses on Columbus' drive, first to become a sailor and then to find backers for his plan to reach the Far East by sailing westward. The book features Columbus in a positive light, obviously, though it is fair in recounting his acceptance of slavery and general arrogance. While I would only consider it waiting room material, it does serve as a good biography to introduce one to the life of this show more influential figure of history.

Junipero Serra, a catholic priest of the order of St. Francis was an early pioneer of the west. California history would not be the same with out this priest that wielded a cross instead of sword. Names of so much of California are inspired by this man and his followers.. As noted in the back of the book his work with the Native Americans was not without controversy but nonetheless his role in the settlement of North America remains secure. The book's index makes this book a worthwhile show more research tool. show less
