Beautiful, high-quality images of punk rock flyers make up the bulk of this large paperback. Hardcover would have been better. The heavy, glossy pages are already pulling apart the spine after my first read. Mostly from a West Coast point of view, bands like Dead Kennedys, The Avengers, Black Flag get their own well-deserved pages with remembrances from band members, scenesters like Brendan Mullen, etc. The final quarter or so is other scenes: Boston, The Midwest, Canada, etc.
This was a gift. There are about 4 pages of text - so not much to read really (I guess any more writing was a challenge to the authors), the rest is a collecton of punk flyers, posters, set lists, photographs, some art and zine covers. Essentially a coffee table book & interesting to browse through & remember.
An exposition of the lasting impact of punk on visual culture worldwide. Punk slipped quietly under the cultural radar before rising again to inspire new generations of creative and idealistic artists and musicians. This work features an essay by one of the most respected voices of the fiercely independent DIY music underground, Ian Mackaye. Other contributors include Malcolm McLaren, Vincent Gallo and Matt Burosso.
