About the Author

Art historian Michael Baxandall was born in Cardiff, England. He studied at Downing College at Cambridge; the University of Pavia in Italy; and the Institute of Art History at Munich. He taught at numerous universities throughout his lifetime including Oxford University, the University of London, show more Cornell University, and the University of California at Berkeley. His books include Giotto and the Orators; Painting and Experience in 15th-Century Italy; The Limewood Sculptors of Renaissance Germany; and Shadows and Enlightenment. Fascinating so far. Discusses how paintings came to be, the relationships and contracts between the patrons and commissioners and the artists and their apprentices, and how the whole process evolved over the century.
Incredibile saggio di storia dell'arte assolutamente da leggere. Non è, come pure tanti hanno detto, un saggio di storia sociale dell'arte. Si tratta di un saggio che pone in primo piano tutte, ma proprio tutte, quelle cause che portano alla nascita dell'opera d'arte. Alcuni esempi presi in esame nel libro: il Forth Bridge di Baker e il ritratto di Kahnweiler di Picasso. Un ponte tra critica storia per capire l'opera d'arte, la sua nascita e la sua funzione.
