I've rarely encountered a memoir that reads just like a novel, but Patricia Bosworth's account of her early adulthood in New York City does just that. With impressive honesty, she discusses the suicides of her brother and later her father, along with the abusive nature of her first marriage and the conflicts she felt between the doctrines of her Catholic faith and her own actions. All this makes for fascinating reading and a book I would highly recommend.
A wonderful, insightful page turner about the life of this talented tourtured soul. He was a Movie Star and one of the great method actors to come out of the Actor's Studio. But more than that, he was a man with many faults, who hid his secrets from the world, but gave us his amazing body of film work.
All credit goes to the author because this still stands as the definitive "MONTY" biography.
What can be said about Diane Arbus that would capture what her photographs do? Nothing really. Her street photography and portraits proved she was a beacon for the people on the outskirts and she was WAY ahead of her time. This bio is an intimate detailed account of her too short life in all of its intensity and daring. If you haven't heard of her and like disarming and sometimes grotesque photography, I encourage you to check her out. As a long time fan, I can say this bio put her art in show more perspective for me. show less
I really enjoyed this biography that drew on Brando's autobiography and other accounts to chart his life from stage and screen, gigolo to AIM activist, and public figure to recluse. The commentary and analysis of the films has prompted me to revisit or discover many of them. For instance, I have now seen and enjoyed Brando's "Julius Caesar". I liked that is was so close to the Shakespeare original and helped support this book's revelation that Brando began as a very successful stage actor. show more Thanks to this book I can see that film, a role in which he was encouraged by and trained for by his mother, as a connection back to his stage career. show less
