The cast is excellent, but the lack of story and weak writing make this a horrible movie. It's uncomfortable giving these actors such a low rating on a movie they made and usually I will not rate lower than three stars for quality actors, but, as explained below, two stars feels relevant here.

The "hacking" used in the movie is not really an element / character. The theme of "misdirection" is brought in late, rarely referenced, and would be show more the most interesting aspect of the movie if used to drive the story. Instead, gratuitous nudity and repeated tension or shock of threatening people and/or killing people and/or violence are what is used to drive the story. Not interesting. The intent of John Travolta's character (about terrorism) he repeats ad nauseum, and it doesn't mean anything; there's no character development for that intent. The computer and hacking is also not interesting, has no depth, and is not believable. There is even a scene called "hackstasy" devoted to Hugh Jackman's character getting caught up in his hacking, complete with many colors of lighting as he moves through the room. (ugh)

Kip Raines (Giovanni Ribisi) is a cocky young car thief working with a crew to steal 50 cars for a very bad man whose nickname is "The Carpenter." Being young and cocky, Kip messes up, so it's up to his big brother, Randall "Memphis" Raines (Nicolas Cage), to come out of car thief retirement and save him. With a cast that includes Robert Duvall, Angelina Jolie, Delroy Lindo, Cage, and Ribisi, it would be easy to say this story wastes all their talents--which it does, but that's not show more the point. This is a Jerry Bruckheimer film. A good story and complex characters would only get in the way of the action scenes and slow the movie down. No, Gone in 60 Seconds (based on the cult 1974 film of the same name) is not about the stars as much as it's about cars. Fast cars. Rare cars. Wrecked cars. All cars. Too bad director Dominic Sena (Kalifornia) doesn't come across as more of a gearhead; he seems less interested in fast cars than fast cuts. But is this movie fun? Absolutely, and it's fun because it's so stupid. With pointless car chases and hackneyed dialogue in one of the most predictable plots of the year, Gone in 60 Seconds is a comic film that's not quite a parody of itself, but darn close. --Andy Spletzer show less

From Netflix: Rogue agent Gabriel Shear (John Travolta) is determined to get his mitts on $9 billion stashed in a secret Drug Enforcement Administration account. He wants the cash to fight terrorism, but lacks the computer skills necessary to hack into the government mainframe. Enter Stanley Jobson (Hugh Jackman), a n'er-do-well encryption expert who can log into anything. Halle Berry co-stars (in the buff!) in this high-tech thrill ride.
