About the Author

Howard Joseph Ruff was born in Berkeley, California on December 27, 1930. After finishing high school, he served a two-year mission in the eastern United States for the Mormon Church. He later majored in music education at Brigham Young University with a minor in economics, but dropped out his show more senior year. He joined the Air Force and toured with its symphony as a baritone soloist. He also performed with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. In 1982, he released the album Howard Ruff Sings. He went on to run an Evelyn Wood speed-reading business. It helped make him a millionaire, but eventually failed and his franchise was revoked, forcing him to declare bankruptcy. After that, he became an investment adviser. He became a millionaire for a second time, but that business also failed. In 1975 he started publishing a newsletter called Ruff Times, which mixed financial counsel with conservative commentary. It drew more than 175,000 subscribers. This lead to the syndicated weekly television program Ruff House. He also organized forums that offered investment advice and established companies that distributed natural vitamins and coins, as well as other for-profit and self-promotional ventures. By 2002, circulation of Ruff Times fell to 3,000. He wrote several books including How to Prosper During the Coming Bad Years, Famine and Survival in America, and How to Prosper in the Age of Obamanomics: A Ruff Plan for Hard Times Ahead. He died from complications of Parkinson's disease on November 12, 2016 at the age of 85. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

History of Financial Advice Collection. Howard Ruff was an engaging, if rather apocalyptically-minded, entrepreneur who had careers as a publisher, singer, and broadcaster as well as a stockbroker and writer. Ruff was, like Paul Erdman and George Goodman, concerned to try and offer ways that investors might negotiate the financial crises that were occurring in America in the ’70s and was especially concerned to defray what he saw as the drastically damaging effects of inflation. Ruff’s show more sense of impending crisis was often articulated through a conservative political agenda and his fears of “exploding inflation, price controls, erosion of savings” was linked to both “more government regulation” and a future “international monetary holocaust which will sweep all paper currencies down the drain and turn the world upside down. Paper fortunes based on lending will be destroyed and a new kind of investment and planning morality will put some very unlikely people on top of the heap.” Amongst Ruff’s unorthodox financial advice was to “invest in inflation,” by taking on more debt and investing it, and to hedge against crisis, by purchasing silver, gold, and (the right kind of) real estate. show less
