Flumpf. That sound where everything settles perfectly into place. This book was so much more than I expected. I knew it was going to be a slow burner. All too often slow burn equals sexless and boring. Diane Adams defied that preconceived notion. The little touches and tender moments were hotter than many sex filled novels. I loved how the story flowed. It was interesting and had the perfect amount of tension to keep it from falling into the ‘fluff’ category.
I want to see other works by the creators. Lovely idea, well-written text, very appealing art. However, it is against the law to keep wildlife (in the US) for very good reasons. I somehow doubt this little girl is a licensed rehabilitator.
This is one of those magical books that reached inside me, grabbed hold of my heart, and pulled me into its world. It's a delightful read, full of longing, about two men falling in love against their will, against their plans, but they just fit together so well that despite their differences, you know they belong together. The tension is high, the characters are brilliantly drawn, and the setting breathes like real life. I will be reading more from this author!
Adams sweetly describes all the ways love translates into care for others through the lens of a little girl raising a duckling. A tender way for children to peek into the experience of parents and adult caregivers. Keane's illustrations are clean and fresh and feel straight out of a mid-century animated Disney film (in the best way).
