- James Robert Vernam Marchant (1853–1936) was a British author and lexicographer best known for his work on Cassell's Latin Dictionary. Despite his contributions to classical studies, detailed biographical information about his place of birth and education is not readily available in public records. Marchant authored several works, including Commercial History: An Introductory Treatise for the Use of Advanced Classes in Schools and Barrister-at-Law: An Essay on the Legal Position of Counsel in England , indicating a diverse range of interests and expertise. Given the limited information accessible through standard academic and genealogical sources, uncovering more about his early life and educational background may require consulting specialized archives or historical records related to 19th-century British scholars.

Reviews
Although the revisers removed post-Augustan vocabulary, aiming primarily at a dictionary of classical Latin, they left a wide range of translations for the standard vocabulary which makes this quite a handy reference for late Latin too, compared to the more strictly classical (though much larger) Oxford Latin Dictionary.
