Boy Bear notices that he has trouble hearing in school and at home. All the while, people keep asking him the question "Can bears ski?" and he has no idea what it means! He is taken to the audiologist and gets hearing aids and figures out that this whole time, people have been asking him, "Can you hear me"!

In this poetry collection by Raymond Antrobus, the author addresses his biracial identity, growing up with a drunken father, issues surrounding deafness and disability, especially revolving around policing and prisons.

There are many emotions that are displayed throughout this collection. Especially the author’s use of [caption poems] where Antrobus is inspired by the work of Deaf artist, Christine Sun Kim.

Overall, I really enjoyed the poetry and some will stick with me for a while, especially “For Tyrone Givans”.… (more)
