IVES IS, BY FAR, ONE OF THE GREATEST COMPOSERS OF ALL TIME (or, at least, of the narrow window of time & composers that I'm familiar w/) & Henry Cowell weren't no slouch neither. So, of course, a bk by Henry & spouse Sidney re Ives is bound to be good. Cowell was an early supporter of Ives' music when he was mostly written off as too complicated or dissonant or whatever. Ives' 4th symphony is absolutely the greatest symphony of its time (IMO) & his Concord Sonata is the greatest piano show more sontata of its time (IMO). & it hardly stops there. show less
I read this many years ago and at the time liked it enormously. I always thought the the fact that Henry Cowell wrote it gave it special cred.

Yet I am tempering my stars slightly because it's probably dated. I have not read any of the new biographies. But surely if you don't know anything about Ives, this book will get the basic story told, and it is a riveting story.
