Wonderful 19th century illustrations for the 14th century poem. Captures the zeitgeist, if not the detail, of Dante perfectly.

Beautiful reproductions of Dore's illustrations of Milton's Paradise Lost. Details are incredible. Dynamic of the scenes is breath-taking, just look at those parts where angels roam the Earth. Pure joy for the eyes. Proportions, light, scenery (especially from the creation part of the story), everything looks epic.

I have a feeling that Dore's art was inspiration for the golden age comic artists like Hal Foster.

Excellent art book, highly recommended to Dore's fans and graphics aficionados.

I've always liked Dore's work. This particular selection was interesting because of its focus on medieval warfare. I was surprised to realize how many of Dore's illustrations depicted severed limbs and heads!

I have never read Rabelais, but the illustrations in this book make me want to check it out.

This is a beautifully illustrated book of classic fairy tells written by Charles Perrault with 35 black-and-white illustrations by Gustave Dore which include Little Red Riding Hood, Little Thumb, The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods, Cinderella, Puss in Boots, Riquet with the Tuft, The Fairy, and Blue Beard.

One of my reading goals in 2017 is to revisit some favorite books that I enjoyed as a young girl. I loved that the stories were told in the original form, not the Disney style. I forgot how scary the original Little Red Riding Hood story actually was.

For $1.50 I purchased a copy formatted for an Amazon Fire tablet. The illustrations are magnificent and I thought the Victorian look of the stories was just beautiful. When I delivered it to my Kindle Oasis, an ereader, the illustrations were just as crisp and clear. I loved this book, but some of the fairy tale versions may be too scary for young children.

This is a "greatest hits" of Dore's Bible illustrations, featuring 100 of the most popular ones, each with a facing page of text explaining the scene he is illustrating. This is a mass-produce book and the print quality reflects that.

A fantastic reference work for Dore's superb engravings for Dante. To my mind, Dore is the artist who captured the feel of Dante's poem most accurately, and it's great to have all his work for the Divine Comedy collected together. The only criticism is that unfortunately computer-printed engravings can never have the same richness that they do in the original!

Stuck between not wanting to forget and not wanting to remember, I think we have all felt that at least once in our lives, is the madness that devotion and loss can cause a humans mind.

The classic narrative poem by Poe about a talking Raven. On a rather depressing December night the narrator is trying to heal his heart from the death of his beloved Lenore by reading near a fire. He hears a tapping at his door but nothing is there. Upon the second tapping he realizes it is coming from his window. The raven flies in and the man asks its name. The only response from the Raven is nevermore. The narrator is surprised that the raven can talk wallowing in the fact that like like everything else in his life, will leave him. The raven speaks "Nevermore" again, leaving the narrator assuming that the bird learned the word from a forlorn owner. The narrator pull his chair closer to the raven but his mind wanders back to Lenore. The bird again speaks "Nevermore" making the narrator feel he can never escape his memories. Enraged he calls the raven an evil prophet. He asks the raven if he will be reunited with Lenore in the afterlife and again the raven replies Nevermore enhancing the narrators rage. He shouts at the bird that it's a liar and commands the bird to leave and stayed. The narrator thinks that his soul is trapped in the ravens shadow and shall be lifted nevermore.

The way the poem flows is beautiful. It makes you want to keep reading. And the illustrations are gorgeous.

A dark poem about a man who has lost his love, Lenore. He hears someone knocking at his chamber door, but when he opens it there is no one there. He then opens the window and in flies the raven. To every question the man asks the raven the answer is always "nevermore".

The man's madness is palpable.

This ebook is a nice presentation of Dore's more fanciful illustrations, but many of them are not identified as to what book they are from. The source can be known from the caption sometimes because Pantagruel or some other character is mentioned, but too many are unidentifiable unless one is familiar with the source. It is not asking too much of a book of illustrations to properly cite the source. Dover is a reputable publisher and I never would have thought they would do something like this. Perphaps this is a failing somehow of the ebook as opposed to the print edition. This is why I am giving this book only three stars.

I'm reviewing this format, not the content: Terrible free Kindle edition. No illustrations, not a single one. Shame on Amazon for this.
