About the Author

Paul Gustave Doré (January 6, 1832 to January 23, 1883) was a French artist, engraver, illustrator and sculptor. Doré worked primarily with wood engraving and steel engraving. In 1853, Doré was asked to illustrate the works of Lord Byron. This commission was followed by additional work for show more British publishers, including a new illustrated English Bible. A decade later, he illustrated a French edition of Cervantes's Don Quixote, and his depictions of the knight and his squire, Sancho Panza, have become so famous that they have influenced subsequent readers, artists, and stage and film directors' ideas of the physical "look" of the two characters. He continued to illustrate books until his death in Paris following a short illness. The city's Père Lachaise Cemetery contains his grave. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

Wonderful 19th century illustrations for the 14th century poem. Captures the zeitgeist, if not the detail, of Dante perfectly.

Beautiful reproductions of Dore's illustrations of Milton's Paradise Lost. Details are incredible. Dynamic of the scenes is breath-taking, just look at those parts where angels roam the Earth. Pure joy for the eyes. Proportions, light, scenery (especially from the creation part of the story), everything looks epic.

I have a feeling that Dore's art was inspiration for the golden age comic artists like Hal Foster.

Excellent art book, highly recommended to Dore's fans and graphics aficionados.… (more)

I've always liked Dore's work. This particular selection was interesting because of its focus on medieval warfare. I was surprised to realize how many of Dore's illustrations depicted severed limbs and heads!
