About the Author

Samuel Adams Drake was born in Boston. Massachusetts in 1833. He was educated in the Boston schools and in 1858 moved to Leavenworth. Kansas, where he was a journalist and merehant until the outbreak of the oivil war. He joined the Kansas militia as captain in 1861, and was promoted show more brigadier-general of militia in 1863 and colonel of the 17th Kansas volunteers in 1864. He returned to Boston in 1871 and devoted his time to his literary work show less

Stuffed with archaic local folklore and bits of history that might otherwise not be as readily available. It's quite beautifully written though some might find it stuffy. It was written a long while ago. I see it's been reprinted and is in hardcover. I've got an old paperback. Love browsing in this book.
