James Fallows is a national correspondent for The Atlantic magazine, since the late 1970s and is based in Washington. He was raised in Redlands, California. He is a graduate of Harvard University with a degree in American history and literature, and a graduate of Oxford University with a degree in economics. His career also includes two years as chief speechwriter for Jimmy Carter, two years as editor of US News & World Report. He won the National Magazine Award for his story, Iraq: The Fifty-First State? (2002), the National Book Award for nonfiction for his book, National Defense, and a N. Y. Emmy for the documentary series Doing Business in China. His books include Blind Into Baghdad, Postcards from Tomorrow Square, China Airbourne, and Our Towns. (Bowker Author Biography)
