Asylum is a quick, fast paced read, focusing on a group of people trapped in a nightclub called Asylum during the zombie apocalypse. There is a bit of gore in the beginning but this story isn't about the zombies, it's about how we cope with the idea of impending doom.

For a 60 some page novella, there is a lot going on in Asylum. It's filled with social commentary on how society deals with the LGBT community. As each character thinks on their past, we see that what society has dealt them changes their view on this zombie situation.

The protagonist, Curtis, is a good kid in a bad situation. You really like him from the start. The zombie action is sort of minimal as everything takes place in the club but the reminder that death is outside the door is always there. The story is really about how people will react to a situation.

There are a few scenes with sexual situations and of course there is foul language (who wouldn't cuss like a sailor with zombies outside their door?) The story was quick enough to enjoy in one sitting (except for me, the extra slow reader). Perfect for those dark and stormy nights when you need a scare.

These stories do revolve around Halloween but they are more than just horror. They are tales of grief, of love and loss, spirits with unfinished business, all surrounding the most otherworldly night of the year. They can be savored slowly to help you get into the spirit of Halloween or devoured quickly for a rush of spooky fun any time. I read them over a particularly hot week in July while I was away from my home and my air conditioner. I was almost able to convince myself that I could hear rustling leaves and a cool October wind. All were good, but for me the most notable in the bunch were...

Strange Candy- A story about a grieving man who finds peace after consuming an odd confection brought home in his child's trick or treat bag.

#MakeHalloweenScaryAgain -in which a writer who wishes to draw some interest and attention to his work stirs up a serial killer with his simple hashtag.

The Rage Of Achilles - A priest hears a haunting confession on Halloween from a man who has suffered a tragedy.

Highly recommended to all lovers of horror and Halloween.

I received an advance copy for review.

When It Rains by Mark Allan Gunnells is an interesting read. The plot picks its pace right from the beginning. But, I felt it slowed down a little bit in the middle. While reading, the plot gives us a vibe of the days when we were in lockdown due to Corona. Although, I was not much impressed as I like the author's previous work more. But, if you are searching for a book which you can read within a day, then pick it up.

I would like to give the book 4 stars. Thanks to Netgalley and Crystal Lake Publishing for providing me an opportunity to read and review the book.… (more)

For me the book, Tales From The Typewriter by Mark Allan Gunnells was an instant hit right from the beginning. Short stories have always been my favorites. The plot starts with a slight note of horror and the author brilliantly steers the plot in a single direction. The climax was also satisfactory. Perfect for beginners who are looking for a fast read.

I will, definitely, give the book 5 stars, Thanks to Netgalley and Unnerving Publishers for giving me an opportunity to read and review the book.… (more)
