This was one of my favorite books when I was little. It is a heavy book full of beautiful Japanese poetry. The illustrations so perfect!

The first poem:

Baby Hands

One chestnut, only one,
Is all his tiny hands can hold,
My little baby son. Gomei

I don't know how many times that I have read it but it touches my soul each time.

Another favorite of mine:

The Modest Violet

Climbing this mountain pathway,
No lovelier flower I see
Than the little shy violet, hiding modesty. Basho

Mixed stories, non-fiction and poetry for children from famous authors and people who are now unknown. I find I'm loosing my taste for a lot of children's literature, but I found some items worth reading and suspect a child would do better.

We had this book of Japanese poetry and prose while I was growing up. I found a copy in very good condition at a library book sale, and brought it home to enjoy once again!
