This second book in the Kick's series starts up just after the first one. Devin's still getting the hang of everything that's new and different in California, as well as easing into the whole middle school boys/girls back and forth that happens at that age.

There's also a little bit of a mystery because someone is messing with the Kicks players and their stuff. For the most part it's not horrible things that happen, but, they're still mean and probably meant to throw off the players (I will admit that I guessed who was doing it early on).

The book was still a bit overly dramatic, especially Devin. But, it was enjoyable book to read, and they haven't even gotten to the book about the next part of the Kick's adventure/season which should be fun to read.

An Earthquake hits Devin and her friends’ town and while the rest of them take it in stride, it totally throws off Devin.

She starts making mistakes, both big and small, on the soccer field. Also, when she goes to the dentist she does not get good news, and she fails a test.

It was a nice change (okay, that’s weird to say) to the character of Devin. It gives her a whole other dimension. Not to mention the fact that a lot of the time these middle reader stories don’t take on something like what gets taken on in this story.

It was another cool Kicks story.

I would include this book in my classroom, and I would use it as an example for a research project. I could read this book, then show an example of a research project to the class. I could then ask the students to do research on soccer player and have them do a project on it. I enjoyed this book because it talks about Alex Morgan's journey from a youth athlete, to a star member on the women's USA national team. Really enjoyed this book.

My 8 year old liked it okay. We read it together. New girl/good girl moves from Connecticut to California and is excited to play soccer in her new school only to find out that the girls' soccer team sucks. Once the team bully transfers and gets out of the way she gets the nerve to talk to coach and the other players and turns things around. Well you knew it had a happy ending, right? The title told you that.
