The new book by author David Pereda (“Golden”) took me on an exciting trip that started in Mexico City, then continued to Rio de Janeiro, followed by Paris, Barcelona, Hollywood, Miami, and finally Asheville. The two main protagonists, Thomas and Alex, are trying to figure out who is trying to kill Prince Alexander Poniatowski (Alex), and there are plenty of potential suspects.

Mixing action scenes and a few comedic passages, the author presents a fast-moving, action-packed storyline which, if you had read his other most recent book, “The Wall,” you could say it continues the rollercoaster ride that is the life of Thomas and Alex.

In each chapter, Mr. Pereda added twists, intrigues, and turns that kept this reader thinking I knew the person responsible for ordering the ‘hit’ on Alex, but the ending surprised me.

If you want a quick, fast-paced, yet easy-to-read novel, I highly recommend “Golden.”

I purchased the book for its cover, the blurb on the back cover, and then saw it was four-hundred pages. My first thought was this book would take me forever to finish, but when I started the book, ‘The Wall’ could have been one-thousand pages.
I could not stop reading it.
The life paths of two families; Thomas and Cecilia Bertram, and Domingo, Blanca and their young daughter, Nancy, were so different and yet so alike. The former owned a thriving restaurant, and the latter operated a repair shop.
Life has a way of bringing obstacles and to these two families, it came in the manner of gangs wanting extortion money and more.
Salvation for both families was going to the United States.
David Pereda blended their stories magically in my humble opinion with interchanging chapters describing how each family made progress towards the US border.
No politics, no opinions, just a story of fiction with a ring of truth in it.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in a contemporary topic in today’s world and who enjoys a terrific story.

A beautiful scene opens David Pereda’s Twin Powers, with sudden unquiet invading a young girl’s peace as events come into focus. The daughter of a rich doctor is vacationing with her mother in Cuba when things fall apart. Soon the doctor, a dangerous assassin friend, Castro’s family, and many more are united in a quest to save the child.

Nice turns of phrase bring characters and scenes to life, while some surprising understatements call secrets into question. “It was obvious he [the father] was going through a rough patch in his life,” might startle the reader when a man’s daughter’s just been kidnapped. But this father is more than just a doctor, and his past, or that of his wife, or both, might be about to catch up with him.

The story includes plenty of sexuality, unexpected romance, touches of mysticism, fast action, cynicism and humor—something for everyone it seems. Some typos slowed the reading for me (she for he, and for an etc), but perhaps they were just in my copy – they didn’t stop me reading.

Twin Powers surprised me most in that the powers of its titular twins are so low-key, almost sidelined in the plot. I wish there had been more about them, but I’m guessing, since this reads like the middle of a series, there’s bound to be plenty more to come.

Disclosure: I bought a copy long ago when it was free. I’m just sorry it took me so long to get around to reading it.

What would you do if you found out that for the last 25yrs, you’ve been living a lie? That’s the dilemma that Cid is faced with, when he visits his estranged father, who is dying from cancer. His father has decided that he needs to seek absolution for his past sins;he begins the conversation by telling Cid, that the best friend that he thinks has been dead for 25 yrs. is in fact alive. Not only is he alive, but his father turned him to Castro’s men before his family had fled. Cid doesn’t even have a chance to absorb this news, when his father tells him that he has news about his first and only true love. Cid discovers that his father told his her that if she really loved him, she would let him leave for the United States and not even tell him goodbye. He is shocked to learn that even his mother, whom he believed would do no wrong, also hid the truth from him. Then his father tells him that his first love had been pregnant when they left Cuba, and he wants to apologize to his grandson and his grandson’s mother before he dies.
What will happen once Cid reunites with his first love, and introduced to his son? Will they’re love be rekindled or will his parents’ deceit block any chance they have for love? Will Cid tell his best friend the truth, that it was Cid’s dad who led to him being imprisoned? Will Cid’s son be willing to take the chance to get to know him, and will all of these things ruin all that he’s built in Florida?
This book has everything needed to enthrall the reader; the element of the all consuming Romeo & Juliet type of love. It has family secrets that are only being revealed because of an imminent death. If romance and drama appeal to you, then I would definitely recommend this book for you.
