- Amy Beth Schumer (born June 1, 1981) is an American stand-up comedian and actress. She ventured into comedy in the early 2000s before appearing as a contestant on the fifth season of the NBC reality competition series Last Comic Standing in 2007. Since 2013, she has been the creator, co-producer, co-writer, and star of the Comedy Central sketch comedy series Inside Amy Schumer, for which she received a Peabody Award and for which Schumer has been nominated for five Primetime Emmy Awards, winning Outstanding Variety Sketch Series in 2015.
Schumer wrote and made her film debut in a starring role in Trainwreck (2015), for which she received nominations for the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. She published a memoir in 2016, The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, which held the top position on The New York Times Non-Fiction Best Seller list for two weeks. The same year, she was nominated for two Grammy Awards: for Best Comedy Album for Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo, and Best Spoken Word Album for The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo. In 2018, she starred in the comedy film I Feel Pretty and garnered a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play nomination for her Broadway debut in Meteor Shower.

Every once in a while you read the right book at the right time. This was one of those books. I'm a first time mom and my daughter was born about three and a half months ago. Learning to be a mom was exciting and challenging - but nothing could have prepared me for the labor experience. Arrival Stories contains essays from women of all walks of life as they experience becoming moms. No two are the same. Some lost their babies, some had difficult pregnancies, some adopted, some conceived show more through IVF - all are candid about their experiences. It was heartening to read other experiences that were so similar and so different. My only "beef" is that many of the women in this collection are in a wealthier position than many Americans - making a few of the experiences nearly unrelatable. Other than that - I thoroughly enjoyed this collection. show less
Who the hell is Amy Schumer? I have no idea. Since I picked up this book I've learned she's a comedian, she has her own show, an HBO special, and she starred in and wrote the movie Trainwreck. So why did I listen to this book? Because I read in Huff Post that some internet trolls were trying to tank the book's ratings and that just made me feel rebellious, so here I am.
Now, I LOVE this girl. She's strong, she works hard, (really, really hard), she's (brutally) honest, she has a heart and show more most importantly she loves herself. She wants YOU to love yourself. She also doesn't want any more people to be shot while at a theater watching her movie. She talks honestly about what that felt like and why she is so passionate about background checks for gun owners.
All that and some vagina jokes. What's not to love?
Recommended for everyone, but especially young women. She has an important message that I think needs to be heard. Love yourself ladies! show less

I read Amy Schumer's The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo even though I'm frequently disappointed with comedian's autobiographies. Some of it was pretty wonderful: when she speaks about rape and abuse and also when she talks about body acceptance. But then she has to throw in her "just to be shocking" humor, and I'm not shocked, just bored and disappointed.
In my book club last month someone threw out the statement that it takes a certain kind of woman to get herself into an abusive show more relationship. Maybe I should give the book to her just for that. show less

I liked her before I read this, now I might be her biggest fan. I listened to the audio version, which (I'm guessing) added extra personality to the narrative because it's literally coming directly from the author's mouth. It was funny at times, surprisingly touching in others, and pretty damn brave and honest given how deep she goes and the types of personal stories she shares. My favorite part was hearing about her road to becoming a successful standup. I love that it wasn't a story of show more overnight success, but rather many years of hard work, awkwardly silent crowds, and total bombs before she finally found success. My take away: if you have a dream you'd better be willing to work f$&@ing hard for it. Who can't be inspired by that? show less
