Etienne de Sousa (in the novel) is named Paul Lopez in the novella. He is a second or third cousin of Hattie Stubbs who has not seen her since she was about 14. Since he is taking a cruise to Europe, he decides to visit the Stubbs, but Hattie is very upset at his sudden arrival, claiming that he is a bad, wicked man.
