Description
| Description | James Smith (1) was a deeply religious slave living in Virginia. His vigorous preaching and praying frightened his master, who feared that it would stir up trouble with the other slaves. Despite torture and imprisonment, Smith continued in his religious devotions. He was sold, and eventually ran away, but when he tried to find his wife, she has also been sold. They reunited in 1850 after each had individually fled to Canada.
