Description
| Description | Maria Anne Fitzherbert, née Smythe (1756-1837), was the long-time lover of George, Prince of Wales before he became king as George IV. They went through a wedding ceremony in 1785, but their union was invalid under the statutes concerning royal marriages. George bowed to the pressure of making a proper royal marraige with Caroline of Brunswick, but continued to see Mrs. Fitzherbert until about 1811. |
