Speculative Oppression
- Description
- Speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, horror, etc.) that invents oppressive dynamics and interestingly engages with them. Dynamics may have parallels to, be strongly coded as, or exist alongside real life dynamics, such as racism and sexism. Explanation is strongly encouraged.

- Sammelsurium: Main character is both ethnically mixed (white and Turkish) and a kind of human/vampire mix. Since these mixed vampires depend upon pure vampires to have children, they basically form a caste of bodyguards and childbearers, and are trained to serve pure vampires from birth. Oppressive dynamics are unique, well-thought-out, intersectional, and core to the main character's motivations.

- ManWithAnAgenda: In the future, debt is inherited. A way of paying family debt is selling yourself into slavery and taking a drug that reduces willpower. The wealthy elite is maintained by the use of the poor.

- Sammelsurium: The main character is dropped into a colonized country where conflict between the dark-skinned native group and light-skinned colonizing group is coming to a head. Interesting exploration of and deconstruction of white saviour trope.

- Sammelsurium: After aliens have taken over the bodies of most of the people on Earth, one seeks out the last of the free humans. There are many parallels between this text and narratives surrounding colonialism and genocide in America. For instance, the aliens see themselves as pacifists and civilizers, using infighting and conflict among humans as an excuse to take away their sovereignty--not only over their land, but their bodies. The aliens also see themselves as stewards of human culture as they actively participate in the genocide of the human species, comparable to much of the academic work done with regard to Native American groups.

- Sammelsurium: The main character, half-goblin and half-elf, unexpectedly becomes emperor in a land predominantly made up of elves. Engages with the ideas of loneliness and isolation as they relate to ethnicity and family ties.

- Sammelsurium: A great study of the doctrine and worldview of imperialism. The main character is an ambassador to the empire of Teixcalaan from Lsel station, a distant satellite state. Throughout the book, she struggles with the idea that Teixcalaanli culture is superior to all "barbarian" cultures (including her own), both as an idea that others frequently express to her and something that she's internalized herself. Her personal angst is paralleled by the assymetrical political relationship between Teixcalaan and Lsel Station, which the main character is responsible for keeping in balance.

- Sammelsurium: This series investigates the popular fantasy system of oppression (featured in Dragon Age, among other works) where a group of unusually powerful people are oppressed because of how dangerous they would be if left free.
