- New Scientist is a UK-based weekly English-language international science magazine. Sold in retail outlets and on subscription, the magazine covers current developments, news, reviews and commentary on science and technology. It also prints speculative articles, ranging from the technical to the philosophical. There is a readers' letters section which discusses recent articles, and discussions also take place on the website. Readers contribute observations on examples of pseudoscience to Feedback, and questions and answers on scientific and technical topics to Last Word; extracts from Last Word have been compiled into a series of books. New Scientist is based in London and publishes editions in the UK, the United States, and Australia. Issues from its launch in 1956 to 1989 are available free on Google Books, with more recent issues available to subscribers on the New Scientist website. - (i) The first issue of The New Scientist was published on 22 Nov. 1956. (ii) The cover of the 26 Nov. 1959 issue was mis-dated 26 Nov. 1952. (iii) The issue for 29 Dec. 1960 (no. 215) is mis-numbered 214. (iv) "The" was dropped in 1961. (v) The front cover has been illustrated since 1965. (vi) New Scientist merged with Science Journal in early 1971 to form New Scientist & Science Journal. (vii) A national journalists' strike caused a gap between the issues for 30 Sept. 1971 (no. 771) and 2 Dec. 1971 (no. 772), the magazine taking the opportunity to revert to its previous title, New Scientist. (viii) Since at least 1990 the magazine has published a double or even treble issue over the Christmas and New Year holidays, traditionally with more light-hearted content. (English, Member-written)
- (ix) A editorially independent monthly Dutch edition circulating in the Netherlands and Flanders, a continuation of Natuurwetenschap & Techniek (est. 1932), was established in 2015, containing mainly translations of articles in the English-language edition, but also its own articles.
