- About My Library
Most of my books have been acquired as used books—from used-book stores and library sales. When I was young, I preferred paperbacks; nowadays, I prefer hardbacks—provided that the binding is traditional: Pages, gathered in signatures, and, when possible, sewn in signatures (not a perfect-bound paperback with hard covers glued on, as though an afterthought). ¶An exception is preference for distinguished paperback series, like Doubleday Anchor Edition paperbacks from the 1950s to the 1970s, with covers by artists such as Edward Gorey, Leonard Baskin, et alia; and with elegant book design and typography. ¶Another preference is for books whose illustrations are printed by the rotogravure printing process (“gravure”); nowadays rarely attempted, but common in the twentieth century, gravure pictures are significantly more beautiful than pictures rendered by lithography or letterpress.
