The end of the last thread

The person below me would have preferred that I used prime numbers in apposition to the thread number, namely 2 times 2 (my favorite prime number) times 11.

2SomeGuyInVirginia

I'm just marveling at how you managed to work a pickup line into it.

TPBM is a smoker.

3SylviaC
Oct 7, 2010, 7:37 pm

No.

(I think Robert's thread title is perfect. And he has very good taste.)

TPBM has not yet reached his or her favourite age.

4WholeHouseLibrary
Oct 7, 2010, 7:50 pm

I'm ~always~ at my favorite age.

TPBM is aging as gracefully as one can hope to, and won't attempt to mask it by using hair dyes or plastic surgery.

And, thanks Robert, for the new thread.

5RandomActofMuse
Oct 7, 2010, 8:07 pm

Just how gracefully is one supposed to age when one has only been on the planet for 25 years? I do dye my hair with henna, but purely because I like the red shine I get in the light and not because I'm trying to hide any particular color. Henna doesn't really blend well with greys anyway - I do have a few and henna just makes them bright orange!

TPBM will soon start the search for the perfect carving pumpkin.

6justjim
Oct 7, 2010, 8:33 pm

No. There is no cruelty to pumpkins in this household.

TPBM also likes to deal ethically with our vegetable cousins.

7xorscape
Oct 7, 2010, 8:44 pm

Hmmm. I don't eat as many as are recommended. Does that count?

SRed, my mother used henna. She eventually quit after having lots of orange hair. I like her gray hair better.

The person below me refuses to eat lobster because of the plunging-them-alive-in-boiling-water-cruelty thing.

8SomeGuyInVirginia
Oct 7, 2010, 9:32 pm

I'll eat lobster because a) they're bugs and 2) death is probably quicker and less painful than in the wild. I did give up veal after I saw a single photo of a calf in a cage. Too much.

TPBM hunts for the meat.

9WholeHouseLibrary
Oct 7, 2010, 10:37 pm

My motto is:

If we're not supposed to eat animals, how come they're made of meat?

I do not hunt, however, except in the grocery store.

TPBM hopes PETA doesn't see these posts.

10Boobalack
Oct 7, 2010, 11:20 pm

Phooey on PETA. I think they started out back in the dark ages with good ideas, but they have gone bonkers.

TPBM is a vegetarian (because of cruelty to animals0, yet wears leather shoes.

TPBM follows the old Superstition -- or is it
aesthetic statement -- that one must NEVER read
an H. P. Lovecraft book in a paperback edition.**

*but I am a compulsive vowel-twister, and this
particular twist can be semantically confusing.

** Iʻm impartial on this: Iʻve never read any Lovecraft book in any edition.

13RandomActofMuse
Oct 8, 2010, 10:09 am

I've never read any Lovecraft book in any edition either.

TPBM know better than to wash dishes without rubber gloves when they have a burn on their finger. (Owwww!)

14girlfromshangrila
Oct 8, 2010, 10:23 am

Psah! I even forget to put on gloves when using chlorine, even though it burns my hands badly (I'm allergic), and then I spend days peeling dead skin off them, applying tons of hydrating cream on, and sometimes even ingesting anti-histamines. Silly, silly me.

TPBM is more careful with such things.

TPBM thinks this is a cool year in Roman Numeral.

18Boobalack
Oct 8, 2010, 2:58 pm

Not any more so than any other.

TPBM thinks Roman Numerals, in general, are cool.

19rolandperkins
Oct 8, 2010, 3:56 pm

No, I think theyʻre on the lukewarm side (and Iʻm a Latinist!-- and not much of a mathematician , so not very aware of the facility and advantage of "Arabic" numerals over Roman.)

I read once an article "proving" that it was possible to do long division in Roman numerals. At the very end, the author said that he didnʻt, however, have any evidence that the Romans actually DID long division--
only that they COULD HAVE -- by the system he outlined.

TPBM understands FACTORING in algebra (which is where my mathematical education broke down) --(It was the education, not me, that broke down, wasnʻt it--?)

TPBM is good at handling money matters.

21girlfromshangrila

I'm good at squandering money, but I guess that's not the same...

TPBM has great plans for the weekend.

Oct 8, 2010, 4:34 pm

Yeah, a high definition broadcast of Das Rheingold and church. But my POS Honda could take it all away from me.

The person below me will have a good weekend regardless of how plans play out.

23NarratorLady
Oct 8, 2010, 5:20 pm

The sun is supposed to shine and the leaves are almost at their peak ... so yes!

Daughter and son-in-law show up tomorrow with a truck and some furniture that I thought we had seen the last of. But no! It's to be stored in our basement until they have further need of it. Good lord, old boomerang furniture!

TPBM has a too-full basement.

24girlfromshangrila
Oct 8, 2010, 5:22 pm

I don't even have a basement.

TPBM does.

25SomeGuyInVirginia
Oct 8, 2010, 5:57 pm

Nope, I've got stuff in storage.

TPBM's reading list is a plaything of fancy.

26jillmwo
Oct 8, 2010, 6:12 pm

Probably because the concept of reading time is a figment of fantasy for me.

The person below me has several shelves of books they haven't yet read.

27Tid
Oct 8, 2010, 6:22 pm

Nope. Very few. Books, that is. Not shelves. Books unread, that is, not just books. :-)

TPBM will nominate a book they've been "meaning to read for ages"

28karenmarie

When We Were Orphans
Stone's Fall
The Swarm
The Tommyknockers

What's happend to the "others" option if the book touchstones to the wrong book? The Swarm by Frank Schatzing, not "Metal Swarm" by Kevin J. Anderson. Sheesh.

Those 4 are sitting on my desk asking to be read. There are also about another thousand (literally) that I have tagged tbr. Too many books, too little time.

TPBM loves Friends of the Library sales.

29Mr.Durick
Edited: Oct 8, 2010, 6:59 pm

(The Swarm. I found it twice on the others list, once in German and once in English. But I had to force the touchstone which demanded the German entry.)

30SomeGuyInVirginia
Oct 8, 2010, 7:22 pm

I do indeed. I stopped by the local lie-barry and picked up a stack today, including an original edition of The American Way of Death, which I've been meaning to read for years.

TPBM volunteers at their local library.

31morningwalker

33NarratorLady
Oct 8, 2010, 8:05 pm

It's Tinkers which I've had on the coffee table for ages and must read for a book club. I think that most people have enjoyed it and it is quite short so I should finish it by weekend's end. Can't think why I've been putting it off.

TPBM has already read Tinkers and will tell us whether it's worth our time.

34AnnaClaire

Haven't read it, so I can't say.

The person below me will tell us what his/her favorite history book is.

35xorscape

Fiction or non-fiction? I love a well-researched historical romance. I've just checked out the audio version of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. My friend says it is good.

31, What is a green burial?

The person below me is planning to attend a birthday party soon.

36WholeHouseLibrary
Oct 9, 2010, 3:43 am

Well... kind of. My youngest son's SO had a birthday almost 2 weeks ago. Her schedule being what it is, and with the events of last week reprioritizing my brain, we'll be taking them out to dinner maybe Tuesday night. She's a keeper! My son would be a fool if he doesn't marry her, but I'm sure as heck not going to push him into it.

TPBM has been formally trained in how to use a fire extinguisher.

37morningwalker
Oct 9, 2010, 5:57 am

#35 A green burial is cheap and natural. No embalming, no casket (unless maybe a cardboard one), no vault. You can just be buried in a sheet if you want. In your own backyard if you want.
In the book mentioned the author tells how many funeral practices are not necessary and not the law as many people believe them to be.

TPBM is glad the weekend is here.

38abbottthomas
Oct 9, 2010, 7:39 am

Having retired, weekends don't stand out as much as they used to but today I am also looking forward to the HD streaming from the Met Robert mentioned in #22. We'll see it in Clapham, south-east London.

TPBM would think more than twice about buying a house with a former occupant buried under the backyard.

39justjim
Oct 9, 2010, 7:59 am

As long as they were non-smelly and didn't come out at midnight looking for "Brains, brainsss", then I'd be ok with it.

TPBM took a photograph today. (I took about 900!)

40WholeHouseLibrary

900! That's 1 per second for 15 minutes! What time did you start? It's Saturday, jim. You're supposed to be sleeping in. Get with the program!

How about we sub tea for coffee? Best not to talk to me till I've had my tea, for I am a very very cranky Sarah before I've had my morning tea fix. (I blame preggo hormones. I didn't used to have this problem.)

TPBM is a chirpy cheery morning person.

42AnnaClaire

Hell no. I made the 6AM bus to Rhinebeck last year on a head cold (within walking distance, mind you), and made a big point of it because someone else kept us waiting. The only reason I didn't sleep 'till 9 is because it was a special event.

The person below me isn't a morning person either.

I think I prefer the "Ashes to Ashes" route. A nice clean cremation and scattering for me.

TPBM is putting off doing their chores in order to be here on LT

46SylviaC
Oct 9, 2010, 2:52 pm

Definitely. Folded laundry, clean toilets, and well-fed children are all vastly over-rated. LT is far more satisfying.

The person below me has a website that they like almost as much as LT.

47WholeHouseLibrary
Oct 9, 2010, 3:07 pm

You mean there are ~other~ web sites on the Internet Machine? Astounding!

TPBM can explain direct trunk dialing.

48SomeGuyInVirginia
Oct 9, 2010, 4:49 pm

No, but I do wish that cell phones came with breathalyzers installed. I've gotten some doozies lately. In fact, I think bars should have whatever they install in churches to cut off phone signals.

An aside- The FIRST day of a beautiful, three-day weekend and my left front temp crown comes out. Ack-shully, the MORNING of the first day. I look like Goober Hatfield, but I can spit like a cricket. I hope Polident works because I've got mingle. I've got this fear that I'll be talking with someone and my toof drops in my drink or flies out and hits them in the face.

TPBM has done a lot of thinking about the impact of cell phones on our lives.

49Mr.Durick
Oct 9, 2010, 5:12 pm

I haven't although I haven't ignored that impact entirely. I am a landline free cellular telephone user. I especially like the security the mobile telephone gives me on the road.

The person below me likes the technology of today but despairs of its failures. (When I was a boy a busy signal meant the person being called was using their line; nowadays it means I must dial again.)

50Boobalack
Oct 9, 2010, 8:00 pm

Yes. Computers are wonderful, so long as they work.

TPBM has never had a computer crash.

51rolandperkins

On 49:
I still use a land line (although my wife has a cell phone) and I donʻt understand your ". . .busy signal

for reason(s) other than "the person being called was using their line" ?

52RandomActofMuse

53justjim

Yes we can! Or I can, and will.

>40 WholeHouseLibrary: It was actually 1041 captures for the day! #39 was posted about midnight on my Saturday and I'd spent the day shuttling between two cricket matches. Now I've got to cut them down to 80-100 keepers for each game, process them and post them on the club's website. Oh and then there's laundry, dishes, vacuuming, etc, etc...

Oh, yes, please. You can throw in a few dried cranberries too. And a little tofu or protein powder and I'm all set. I love oatmeal! Even when it is just oatmeal.

I think it is illegal here to bury your dead pets in the backyard. Something about the ground water but I'm not sure. I don't think I'd like to be buried in someone's backyard. But a cardboard casket would be just fine.

The person below me can recommend a good potluck dish for an Octoberfest lunch with some older ladies. Brats, sauerkraut, German potato salad and German chocolate cake are all taken. I used to make a good sauerbraten but I'm not sure how good it would be just warm.

Virology and epidemiology, only as an enthusiastic amateur. Ditto geology. I also spend a lot of unstructured, ill-informed time thinking about the changes that human understanding may undergo over the next few centuries in order to better understand the universe. (I also suck at anagrams.)

"Dichotomy"? Isnʻt there a proverb: "Dichotomies are odious." (?)

No, I guess itʻs "Comparisons are odious."

*The only comics I know anything about are old-fashion comic-book comics and newspaper comic strips.

TPBM remembers, or has seen revived, at least 1 of the old comic strips: Mutt and Jeff, Blondie (might be still running), or Pogo.

88karenmarie
Oct 11, 2010, 9:48 am

I used to love reading Blondie. I don't get a Sunday newspaper any more (The Los Angeles Time spoiled me for The Raleigh News and Disturber ... oops, Observer...). I also loved Prince Valiant, Beetle Bailey, Doonsbury, Peanuts, and Cathy, among others.

TPBM loves to read the Sunday newspaper.

89girlfromshangrila

I do, but can't get it in the 'jungle' where I live. No newsstands for miles and miles. I can only read it if I drive to town, which I try my best not to do on Sundays.

I need A bookcase, period! Most of my books are on a closet shelf at my mom's house, and the few I have here are on my fiance's desk shelf because we don't have space for a bookcase here. When I want a new book, I go raid my old room at my mom's house and swap some of the ones I've read recently with some of the ones I haven't read for a while. TPBM has/has not found another library on LT remarkably like their own.

171rolandperkins
Oct 15, 2010, 12:05 am

Iʻve found libraries with as many as 70 or 80
"Books that (we) Share". The average, though, is about 15 or 20 And Iʻm not sure that
"B t w S" catches ALL the applicable titles.

On the other hand, the nmber of matches is expanded by the fact that B t w S takes in titles that, in my "library", are just Wish List items, and the Wish List category far outnumbers the number of "MY Library"-- the books that I actually own, which is nearing the 550 mark.

TPBM dislikes the new way of showing the typical books that come up under a particular
tag: by display of book covers. The covers are nice, but the authorʻs name and even the title is
often illegible. So she/he, that is I, preferred the old unabadhedly statistical way of listing them.

To SGIV and anyone who suffers from migraines:

Press into both supra-orbital notches with both thumbs as hard as you can stand it.

Hold for about five minutes, if you can stand it. If not, a shorter time will suffice.

Wait a few minutes, repeat if necessary.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This cured my migraines 95% of the time and only had to be done twice on rare occasions.. I stopped having them after menopause. Yay, menopause! It works on the same principle as acupuncture. Not menopause, the thumb in the notch.
Of course, the supra-orbital notch is what they go through to perform a frontal lobotomy, but not to worry. You won't be pressing that hard, nor will you be using a surgical instrument. Bwa-hahahaha!
Please continue the game. Thanks.
Oct 16, 2010, 12:08 am
I don't have a specific one in mind, but honestly? A minivan with a good engine and working A/C that will make sure everyone gets adequate cooled air. Florida summers with broken A/C in the car is just not a good idea. Rolling down the windows is almost worse because of the humidity! I'd love something I can put my son's wheelchair in without beating up the trunk/hatch/thing, and if it can hold Kidlet's chair and a folded stroller, even better.
Unfortunately, I have a little over a year left of paying my small SUV off. The A/C is iffy (doesn't blow hard, barely blows cold, will cost $1600 to repair), it takes ten minutes to get the wheelchair (which takes up the entire back of the car so you can't fit anything else in with it) situated in such a way that it isn't tearing up the upholstery on the floor, and the back passenger window has just decided that it wants to be slow at going up. I'm not sure what I'll get at trade-in for it, but it certainly won't be enough to buy a new minivan. Hopefully we can get enough to cover at least most of a used one that meets my requirements!
TPBM has a specific "dream car" they'd love to tell us about.
Probably not.
I am looking at cars. I have a 10 year old Acura TL with 150,000 miles. I still love my car, but it is aging. It takes me at least two years to look at options, think about it, test drive, think about it, etc. I don't have any idea what I will get the next time. The new TL has been ruined (for me). Too heavy and ugly. Sigh.
205RandomActofMuse
I do love cats, but I'm not risking taking in a stray. I have a (cat-friendly small) dog and a small child and bringing a feral cat is just unsafe. Besides, if I found a stray, I'd be more likely to try to find its home! A shelter cat, however, is a whole different story and is a possibility after the baby's born and we're all settled back into a routine.
208Mr.Durick
Oct 17, 2010, 6:21 pm
If I know it to be junk I tear it in half without opening it and throw it away unless it doesn't tear. If it doesn't tear I open it, look for a business reply envelope, and mail that back empty (sometimes with part of the junk they sent me in it). Once, though, I applied for every credit card that CitiBank offered me. There were plenty of offers, and they had to turn each one down. Finally they stopped sending them.
The person below me has their own mode of fending off solicitations.
209SomeGuyInVirginia
Same thing- I mail back every business-paid envelope I get, almost always give out a fake phone number when asked (because I get snippy when I do get the odd call. Well, I mean a solicitation call. Wait...I mean a call from an organization asking me for money)* and fill out subscriber forms with fake data. I'll also insert code into the name field so I can track who sold what list to whom.
Let's see, that's paper so it will be a restraining order. (I might actually take a restraining order out on my neighbor. I've got over 50 texts from him starting out with his explaining that he's blasting his stereo because life is about dance and spontaneity and even though we agreed to disagree on the noise issue ((in fact, we didn't)) he treasures me as a neighbor, and ending a few months later with 'I will not be ignored!' I've called the cops, blocked his number and told him I do not want to see or hear from him again. Next step- crazy people's court. When I was a kid and dreaming about being stalked for the first time, it was that hot vampire groupie chic from The Lost Boys and not a middle aged, married bald guy. And it was Tangerine Dream, for crying out loud- of course I was going to call the cops!)
My point, and I do have one, is that there will usually be something, Mr. D., and my advice to you is to do what makes you happy AND have a serious steak. You bring a lot to LT, so you must bring a great deal to those around you and they want you to be happy, too. And if they don't, feck 'em. Have the steak anyway. And if you're POS honda has taken all your cash, DEF have a serious steak.
I should be so lucky!
#s 245/247 - kind of a 1st/2nd draft...
I’m Irish. My mother’s family – {REDACTED} - came from (sort of central) Ireland. Her mother was a {REDACTED} (County Cork - more to the west-northwest). Both families settled in the New Paltz/Newburgh area of NY. In the mid 70’s my grandmother and an aunt went to Ireland to do some genealogy work, and were invited by the relatives to spend a few days at the family castle. They talked about the ancestors going back almost a dozen generations in a way that suggested that my grandmother and aunt had missed seeing them by mere minutes. My father’s side is from Galway, Ireland (west coast), and we are in fact, related to {REDACTED}. Fortunately, he had other sons, and at some point, they came to America and spent at least 2 generations in the Bowery area of NYC. My grandfather lived in various other parts of NYC, owned a (Sapolin) paint store, made tons of money which he invested in stocks, and lost everything in the Crash of ’29. Somewhere along the way, he met Ida {REDACTED}, who, coincidentally was also originally from the New Paltz/Newburgh area of NY.
So, I’m Irish – 100%. At least, that’s what I was led to believe. What my aunt and grandmother learned was that the {REDACTED} are “Englishmen living in Ireland”. It took years for my grandmother to recover. Okay, so I’m 75% Irish. It probably explains my nose. Okay, I’m good with that. Well, come to think of it, {REDACTED cousin's last name} isn’t an Irish name, so I asked my father, and he didn’t give me a straight answer, so I started making inquiries to cousins on my father’s side (and for various reasons, we don’t have much communication with them). So, I got this information from {first cousin once removed}, via her younger brother {REDACTED} who told my younger brother {REDACTED}, so this was 4th-hand (if I’m counting correctly) information, and sounded so convoluted that I’m sure there was the effect of a game of “Telephone” occurring. Ida (my father’s mother) was Jewish. Her parents last name was {REDACTED common Israeli last name}, and they emigrated from Germany. Apparently, about half of Ida’s family, probably under prejudicial pressure of the community, converted to Catholicism and changed their last name, ergo, {REDACTED}. Ida didn’t want ~any~ of her children to know, because of the stigma of being a Jew. I still feel a great deal of sorrow that she felt it was necessary to hide her ancestry like that. It must have been difficult for her. (And that is a hint to the point of all of this.)
My next-older brother, {REDACTED}, has been a Librarian since he was in college. While taking 7 years to complete his Masters in English Literature from Providence College – he made the deadline with one day to spare – he worked at the Brown University Library. Aside - While there, he had access to, and read, ALL of the unpublished manuscripts of H.P. Lovecraft. There’s a good reason, he says, why they weren’t published, and {REDACTED} likens Stephen King’s stories to Mother Goose rhymes relative to these unpublished Lovecraft stories. End-Aside. {REDACTED} decided to join the Peace Corp and spent a couple of years in the Philippines. About 2 weeks after arriving there he called my parents. {REDACTED} - first wife - and I happened to be visiting my folks, and as I was nearest the phone, I answered it. So, it was I who got the news first – {REDACTED} was getting married in 2 weeks, to his Tagalog (native Philippine language) instructor. I suggested to him that, although I was happy for him, perhaps he ought to give the courtship... two months, perhaps, just to be sure, before setting a date maybe a year or more down the road. He apparently took that seriously, because the wedding was 2 months later, and my father actually flew to Manila for the wedding. Dad came back 2 weeks later with emphysema. {REDACTED} came back 2 years later with {REDACTED}, and their maybe 6-month-old daughter, {REDACTED}. It was {REDACTED} who flew in from London to be at my sister's Memorial a week ago. So, {REDACTED} and family (finally) settled in the San Francisco area (where {REDACTED} has some relatives), and {REDACTED} has been a Librarian at the main branch of the SFPL for over 30 years now. He has ~no~ background in computers, but when they get new software (for public use) in, he’s the one who has to figure out how it works (or doesn’t). Well, they got some genealogy software and after he installed it and initiated the session, he typed in “Ida {REDACTED}” and possibly a few other parameters. Sure enough, out pops census records and Change-of-Name records and with a bit of digging around, the immigration records of her parents. It seems that whereas Ida’s father was a German Jew, her mother was a French Jew, and taking it back another generation, ~her~ mother was Italian. So, I’m Irish, but not so much.
And that is why I didn’t get up and say anything at my sister's memorial. Besides the potential for liver spots, the one thing that I inherited from Ida became quite obvious to those who knew her – I talk too much. I submit, as evidence, the three previous paragraphs, versus the concise four words of my previous sentence. Case closed, QED.
TPBM realized that s/he just lost a few minutes of h/is/er life that can never be recovered.
Not so original, but my husband and I, when we were just friends in Connecticut in 1977, saw a stone at the Stoddard Family cemetary near New London Connecticut. It said:
As I once was
As I am now
So you will be
Yes, I knew that, though I do need noise to sleep. I have awakened on purpose more than once from a dream. For example, once I dreamed I was drowning and told myself, "This is just a dream" several times before I finally awoke. I was having a terrible time breathing, so that must be why I had the dream. I also dream quite frequently in color.
Haven't had an occasion to do so since I can't remember when. High school? My step-granddaughter had a white-tie wedding, but they changed the date when her husband was sent to Afghanistan, so I was unable to attend. I did have some fancy wear picked out, too.
The real problem is the shoes. Girly shoes don't work for me. I can barely stand in them, much less walk or spend the evening in them. I've got arch problems, ankle problems, toe problems, you name it, made only worse by getting a foot smooshed in a car accident. As it is, I've twisted an ankle and fallen three times in the last month (once down a flight of stairs) while wearing reasonably sensible shoes. Luckily, no real damage, just bruises. Sometimes the ankle just falls right over.
An old boyfriend had the nerve to look at my shoe pile and call me Imelda. It's not for fashion, it's the endless search for shoes that are comfortable for my quirky feet.
TPBM has a foot fetish.
A pet peeve and --unlike most of my peeves
not a petty one:
This is somewhat in line with 428-429:
I hate to fill out a form of any kind on line.
There always seems to be nowhere to write what you are intending to write.
Related, but petty: I'm peeved by the menu of
languages given by LT for cataloging purposes. Many of the languages that my books are in don't even appear on it. And I can see no way of correcting a wrong language that has already been put in for the book.
The same -- and worse --is true of the menus in UNILANG, another group that I joined. Unlike LT, the Unilang menu format can give rise to many other errors in the data generaed from it.
TPBM belongs to UNILANG or to some language/language learning related group.
