The tag counts on tag pages are off by anywhere from thousands to hundreds of thousands, like this:

Tag: Lyra Belacqua

Tag and its aliases used 25 times by 25 members.

You use: Lyra Belacqua (4)

Most often tagged Lyra Belacqua

Northern Lights by Philip Pullman (39,066 times)
The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman (14,668 times)
The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman (14,191 times)
Lyra's Oxford by Philip Pullman (5,024 times)

I checked a few other tags that are exclusive for this series and it was the same deal. The problem seems to be with specific tags, not with specific books. "Leonardo da Vinci" has normal tag numbers, but "religion" (for which The Da Vinci Code is the 3rd book) tag numbers are off by hundreds of thousands.

For a few more examples: "fantasy", "alethiometer", "magic", "family" and "humor" are having problems, but "fiction", "paperback", "adventure", and "read" are not.

I think this is related to the bug I posted here.

Yeah. Looking at it. Thanks.

OK. I'll close the bug status on the other thread, since the problems are related.

That seems a little premature. Since the threads aren't actually duplicates I think it would be better to wait to see if Tim's fix really does fix the other problem.

Fixed. Thanks.

Is it fixed or over-fixed?

Check this tag here: http://www.librarything.com/tag/%E8%8A%B1%E3%81%A8%E3%82%86%E3%82%81COMICS

It shows at the top "Used 199 times by 199 members" but at the bottom under "Using the tag 花とゆめCOMICS" it just shows "Benibeni (196)"

The tag's been around for ages, because I've been seeing it for at least a few months - I think I started doing author combining and separating for Japanese manga authors in August, and I saw it in tag clouds back then. So I don't think it's a cache thing. (Maybe the 199 vs. 196 is.)

I don't think this is fixed either.

Under the tag '11 in 11' it says "tag used 54 times by 1 members" I use this tag 50 times and another member uses it 52 times.

Here's another tag count issue.
On the work page for Telling Stories Out of Court all of the tags are listed as being used 19 times. However, the book only has two users and they don't overlap any tags on this book. (See hereand here).

The inflated tag counts also appear on the tag pages (See workplace discrimination and Title VII).

The exact same thing (I think) is happening again:

Tag: Bilbo Baggins

Tag and its aliases used 227 times by 22 members.

Most often tagged Bilbo Baggins

The Hobbit; or, There and Back Again by J. R. R. Tolkien (442,351 times)
The Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien (86,920 times)
The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien (82,864 times)
The Two Towers by J. R. R. Tolkien (80,900 times)
The Return of the King by J. R. R. Tolkien (78,972 times)
The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien (29,994 times)

Here's another, fairly dramatic example. If, on the work page for Lisey's Story, you display the numbers for the various tags, you will see that the overwhelming number have supposedly been applied to that book precisely 2,695 times. A few of the numbers are much larger--such as for the tag American literature, which according to these numbers, was applied 16,170 times to this book (which is in only 3,840 catalogs).

ETA: the 2,695 appears all over the place when number are shown for all tags. When you display the numbers for only the most popular tags, the numbers are all much larger.

I posted a question about a change to the tags in the Welcome to Librarything forum, and it was suggested that I post it here as it is likely a bug:

Has there been a change to the tag format in the past little while? In the past when I looked up a tag (Read in 2010 for example) it organized the books in order of how many people used the tag for that book. Now it seems to be listing them by the number of people who own the book, rather than how many listed the book as 'read in 2010'. This means that some books (Harry Potter for example) are perpetually at the top, and books with lower numbers of people owning them can't really hope to break the list.

Thank you! :)

>12 Bcteagirl: That is probably related to this bug. The tag counts (for some tags) are really inflated (for some books), and it seems to have some correllation with number of copies. So for tags with this problem, the post popular books with this problem are bumped to the top.

This appears to be fixed. Has anyone found a tag that still has problems?

I am watching for this. I literally can't figure out where the bug is coming from, and it's really getting to me.

Can you narrow it down to a particular user who has a particular book? (I.e., if a work is having tag issues, can you isolate the user whose tags are getting multiplied?)

Wait, waht? What's the problem here?

This is a different bug. On tag pages of tags with only one (or maybe 2?) users the tag page says, e.g., "Tag and its aliases used 53 times by 53 members." instead of "Tag and its aliases used 53 times by 1 member."

Mostly, but Falâsifa from pomonomo's list is still wrong.

The original bug posted here is back: inflated tag counts for certain tags on certain books.

See any of the examples posted in this thread starting from the top or e.g. education.

Also my immediately prior message still holds, though that was a different bug.

I noticed the inflated tag numbers also.

Crap. Where did this bug come from again?

26jjwilson61
Jan 2, 2011, 2:27 am

Could it be caused by the tag combination run that was recently done?

27timspalding

Fixed. I know how to fix it, at least.

So, um, I think this one is back again? I'm looking at the "read in 2011" tag page, and it says I've used that tag 40 times when I'd actually used it 20. (Well, 21 now, but that's because I only just added another usage.) It looks like some but not all of the other counts on that page are off, too.

(edited to fix typo)

This bug is back again. Hopefully it's just the same issue and Tim can just fix it without having to look into it too much.

Yup, definitely back again. http://www.librarything.com/tag/unwholesome+children%27s+stories

I'd love to know *why* this keeps happening, since it seems to have been "fixed" multiple times....

Yup. We're working on it. Spent a fair amount of time with Chris on it tonight. It will take another day to solve.

Only one user is using that tag.

Others have been fixed. I've changed the order of scripts I run. Step 5 set it, but step 7 changed it back to one.

Thank you for responding! When I posted that link, the tag counts were insanely wrong, but I see that it must've fixed itself finally.
