Looking at both my male/female and dead/alive statistics I have an invisible author turning up in the Cs. There is a bullet point with nothing next to it. Comparing with my collection, I see that the author in question is Stewart Cowley (oh, when I try to create a touch stone he is also invisible) http://www.librarything.com/author/cowleystewart. His author page seems to be in order and I know his name was appearing normally in the statistics a couple of weeks ago.
ETA: No, looking again, his author page is not in order. His name is missing from the top where is should be in bold and from the title bar of both browser and tab.

I wonder if his name does not appear because the canonical name was deleted.

I fixed it by entering a Canonical Name and then removing it. This is a related to a bug that was fixed a while ago, where if you deleted the Canonical Name it would be forever blank (http://www.librarything.com/topic/99398). I'll leave this bug open, as it is a different behavior than the original problem that bug addressed.

It appears to have happened again, this time twice. One of the victims was Rudyard Kipling and I was able to correct the problem there. The other is for an author who has been folded into Karl May, but probably shouldn't have been. I'm not touching that, because Karl May is an utter disaster and I'm leaving that to someone who knows a lot more than I do.
Anyway, this seems to be striking random authors for unknown reasons. Kipling hadn't had a change made to his canonical name since October, but he vanished yesterday.

Tanith Lee also disappeared - I fixed it (I didn't actually enter anything into the Canonical Name, just double-clicked to edit then saved it). I discovered it because I touchstoned a book of hers and it came up with no author and the author touchstone was blank (that is, the only thing visible was the (others) link).

I can't replicate this and am therefore not certain if the bug is still possible, or if it is a holdover from when deleting canonical names would blank out authors. I've tried deleting canonical authors and adding them back. I can't get it to go invisible.

One way to find authors this has happened to is to look at a long list of authors names, for example http://www.librarything.com/profile/bluetyson/stats/gender
There are currently no blank names on that list (I've just fixed quite a few). I'll keep an eye on it, and if any appear after today without changes to the Canonical Name, we'll know the bug is still lurking.

Here are three blank authors from my list: James G. Basker, G. G. Coulton, and Nina Fishman. All cases have a deleted canonical name. For Basker the name was deleted on Feb. 2, for Coulton on Sep. 28, and for Fishman on Sep. 30.

Closing. The bug that makes the problem is no longer around and I have now reset all previously-created blank name authors.
