I am looking for new and old titles to share with my grandchildren. What are your favorites? I like, Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree, The Story of Holly and Ivy, and The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree.

David Small's Imogene's Antlers -- which might not be Christmas, per se, but it feels like a Christmas story! Also not a specifically a Christmas story but a great winter story, Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates.

A few favorites: Night Tree by Eve Bunting, about a family of 4 whose traditions include decorating a special tree in the woods for the animals; Silver Packages by Cynthia Rylant, which features the "Santa Train" that goes through Appalachia every year distributing gifts to needy children; and Santa Calls by William Joyce, about a brother and sister who travel to Santa's city and become heroes, but it's especially about the love between the siblings. All of these are well-illustrated picture books.

Who Will Guide My Sleigh Tonight by Jerry Pallotta. Santa tries using various animals to guide his sleigh, with disastrous results. The illustrations are beautiful.

The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg. My kids love this book and remember its story above all others. I also got the book on tape, and my boys loved listening to it at night during December.

The movie is ok, but I'd skip it.

For an older work try The Box of Delights; very English, lots of snow and, as a child, one of my favorites.
Although I read the text version there are illustrated and abbreviated versions available for younger children. I was 8 or 9 when I first read it.

I always liked The Littlest Angel by Charles Tazewell. I loved the illustrations by Sergio Leone.

Me and my grandmother used to read The House of Wooden Santas to me when I was little. I was always too upset by it but I feel like I should mention The Little Match Girl.
