Al Montgomery

*One Montgomery was a backup to Phil Masi and Ray Berres on Casey Stengelʻs 1941 Boston Braves. The later one was the predecessor of
the great Carlton Fisk on the early 1970s Boston Red Sox. Iʻm not sure which of these was an "Al".

I was going to warn you that the Al Montgomery that Touchstones picks up is "prob ably" not the one Iʻm mentioning in #3.

Iʻll say "he" isnʻt: On my checking this,, what is picked up isnʻt even an author; itʻs a book page: Rykenʻs Give Praise to God...

My favourite story of N.E. Brown concerns an 'unknown' specimen placed on a public table at Kew with the message "Resembles {whatever} but fruit wrong", to which Brown added a note "That is not a fruit. It is a spider." -- the structure in question being scarcely 3 mm across.

"...your find" (127)

I had thought that "Portables" were all over the
place, and wouldnʻt be an object of jealousy. Come to think of it, I donʻt recall seeing a "Portable Poe before. But Iʻm always seeing "Portable" authors, notably Jack Kerouac who I donʻt think fit well into that format.
The "Portable Milton" wasnʻt bad; I donʻt own one any more, but did in college. I think it was
because our professor in the Milton course, Douglas Bush was the editor. Conservative, but quite a Miltonist and general 17th c. English expert. His son and I think his grandson are
also professors of Literature.

"Maybe as weird a character as Poe. . ." (127)

The short answer is "yes."

The long answer is: His nogoodnikism is debatable.
He made some Israeli enemies, and didnʻt, on the other hand, acquire many Arab friends by telling an interviewer, "Thereʻs a hell of lot more Arabians (sic) than there is Jews!"
He told anothe interviewer: My mother joined the Peace Corps at the age of Seventy! My sister
(Ruth Carter Stapleton) became an evangelist!
My brother (ca. 1975) thinks he can become president! So, Iʻm really the only sane one in the family."
