Nicholas Edward Brown (1849--1934), botanist at Kew, made great contributions to our knowledge of southern African plants and to succulents (succulent collectors will know how many names carry the authority 'N.E.Br.'). My favourite story of N.E. Brown concerns an 'unknown' specimen placed on a public table at Kew with the message "Resembles {whatever} but fruit wrong", to which Brown added a note "That is not a fruit. It is a spider." -- the structure in question being scarcely 3 mm across.

I had thought that "Portables" were all over the
place, and wouldnʻt be an object of jealousy. Come to think of it, I donʻt recall seeing a "Portable Poe before. But Iʻm always seeing "Portable" authors, notably Jack Kerouac who I donʻt think fit well into that format.
The "Portable Milton" wasnʻt bad; I donʻt own one any more, but did in college. I think it was
because our professor in the Milton course, Douglas Bush was the editor. Conservative, but quite a Miltonist and general 17th c. English expert. His son and I think his grandson are
