There are two distinct baseball teams:

Baltimore Orioles 1901-1902 which became the New York Highlanders then the New York Yankees

and

Baltimore Orioles 1954- present which were the St. Louis Browns, and before then the Milkwaukee Brewers (1901).

IMO, they should not be combined.

The (NL) tags are extra-tough since the book tagged is about the Baltimore Orioles (American Association)

Further information/clarification:

The modern-day Baltimore Orioles, which is what most of the books tagged "Baltimore Orioles" are about, are an American League (AL) team. Nobody in future is likely to use "Baltimore Orioles (NL)" to refer to the modern-day team.

Frankly, personally I couldn't care less about your Oreos ;-)

Kidding of course. I'm trying to figure out what all of this means, but being European US baseball teams are about as intelligable as Patagonian fishermans associations to me.

Ok, that's my bad. Thanks for pointing that out. Baseball teams have confusing histories.

I'm sorry, but I'm confused.

The various tags proposed for combining don't indicate dates. So aren't they referring to the same team?

But what I'm really curious about is the one copy of Tolkien's Return of the King that has this tag!

Oh! Now I see. I didn't get the connection between dates and leagues.

I'm an American and I'm as lost as BarkingMatt!

So is "American Association" the same as "American League"?

(But I still wonder about that Tolkien . . .)

> 5: Maybe the person tagging it that way read it in the stadium, instead of watching the game.

>3 Nicole_VanK: Well, the original Fishermans's Association of Patagonia became the Patagonian Fisherman's Association in 1937 after Luis left and took the boat with him. In late 2006 the name was changed to the Association of Patagonian Fisherpeople to reflect the longstanding contribution of Juan's wife. Juan is the current holder of the fishing license and Juan's wife faithfully packs him a sardine sandwich each day when he goes down to the pier.

American Association is now a league of minor league teams mainly in the midwest. It has existed in various forms since the early 1900s and Baltimore was never a part of it according to the official history:
http://www.americanassociationbaseball.com/office-history.php

They were a part of the old American Association which was a major league which existed for a very few years and then National league.

Cannot get this to properly come over - need the (19th_century) in the url

This wikipedia article gives the basic American League history:

Edited to add additional info and the url and the typos and etc.

Maybe the team had a "Book Nite" instead of a "Bat Nite"? ;)

And I proposed that we combine the tags Baltimore Orioles (NL) and Baseball-Baltimore Orioles (NL)
