'Persephone' by Amanda Clark. 2010.
I came across Amanda Clark and her beautiful artwork while browsing the web. Because spring is here in some areas and hoping to arrive soon in others, I thought her Goddess of Spring Persephone painting was appropriate.
Amanda Clark lives in a country village in England UK. She is mainly a self-taught artist and comes from an artist family. She was encouraged to paint from an early age by other artists.
Amanda gained a National Diploma in ceramics and surface pattern in the early 1990's, which helped her develop her use of color and pattern in her paintings. She also creates textiles, ceramics and art dolls.
As an artist, Amanda is inspired by folklore and myths and the peacefulness of beautiful landscapes with a twist of fairytale and magic. She paints in acrylic and watercolor creating depth and pattern to the beautiful colors in her creations. She has also illustrated four books and is currently painting and line drawing for her 5th book about magical herbs. See her Earth Angels Art blog page for details. http://earthangelsart.blogspot.com/

Fire by Kristin Cashore 4 stars
Fire is the second book in the Seven Kingdoms Trilogy. It is a companion book to Graceling. The setting is based 30 years before Graceling in a kingdom called the Dells. The Dells do not have gracelings, they have “monsters” and their talent is very different. These monsters look very much like animals in our world except they have very bright, beautiful colors and most are predators. With their hypnotic colors, they have the ability to lure prey (humans and other monsters) to them using mind control. Fire is the last remaining human monster and she is marked as a monster by her flaming red hair, which she keeps covered to minimize attention and attacks. Fire's power is extraordinary and valuable.
King Nash is struggling to hold on to his kingdom as rebel lords raise personal armies to unseat him and claim the throne. The land is teeming with bands of robbers and mysterious thieves, and with war looming on the horizon, King Nash seeks Fire's assistance.
You can definitely read Fire without having read Graceling although they do share one very important villain. There is a lot of interpersonal drama and battles with inner demons in addition to the action of the war. There is the element of coming into one's own and finding your place in the world. It has its moments of humor and romance but there is enough action, drama, and fantasy to make it appeal to a wide range of readers. Looking forward to Bitterblue, the third book in the Seven Kingdoms Trilogy, due in late 2011.

The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey 4 stars
These are the secrets I have kept. This is the trust I never betrayed.
But he is dead now and has been for more than forty years, the one who gave me his trust, the one for whom I kept these secrets.
The one who saved me...and the one who cursed me.
The Monstrumologist is set in the fictional New England city of New Jerusalem in 1888. It is told through the journal entries of twelve-year-old orphan Will Henry. Will has a peculiar life, full of late night dissections, cemetery romps, visits to lunatic asylums, and bloody battles in the depths of the earth. Will lives with and is the apprentice/assistant to Dr. Pellinore Warthrop, a monstrumologist.
A monstrumologist is one that studies monstrumology. 1. the study of life forms generally malevolent to humans and not recognized by science as actual organisms, specifically those considered products of myth and folklore 2.The act of hunting such creatures Though the people in the town think Dr. Warthrop is just an eccentric recluse of sorts, the monsters he hunts are all too real. When a grave robber comes to their door late one night, with an Anthropophagi and a dead young girl wrapped in several layers of burlap in his cart, Will Henry is thrust into a horrifying hunt to find the others, because where there is one, there is a colony. The Anthropophagi, are incredibly grotesque, vicious looking things whose diet consists of only one source: human flesh. They don’t have a head; instead, their big black eyes are located in their shoulders, their mouths have sharklike teeth and are located where our stomachs would be. They’re about 9 feet tall once they reach maturity, with razor-sharp, barbed claws, and can leap up to forty feet.
Yancey's writing is amazing. If you like stories about monsters; stories with blood, death, and violence that isn’t glorified but makes perfect sense; stories with terrific characterization and an engrossing storyline; stories that explore good and evil, innocence and monstrosity; stories that are marketed as teen reading but have a witty dialogue and the tougher vocabulary of a sophisticated Adult book; read The Monstrumologist.

It is good....not as much "action" as The Monstrumologist but it is clever...I really like how Yancey writes :)
I am hoping the rain that we are getting will help contain the 13,000 acre brush fire near the Brevard-Volusia county line.....it closed two major highways due to the smoke, schools closed, evacuations...they have named it "Ironhorse" because of its quick spread
smelled smoke in the air this morning..yuck..and all the rerouting caused my trip to work to be 30 min longer...I am thinking with our 5-9 mile winds it will not help the firefighters efforts, they say that 200 to 300 homes today could be in danger
arson is what they are thinking....this is the second brush fire in the same area in about a month..if it is true I hope they catch him/her!

I snagged The Girl Who Would Speak for the Dead
by Paul Elwork
no touchstone
The innocence of childhood,
the unknown of adulthood,
and the search for forgiveness . . .
Emily Stewart is the girl who claims to stand between the living and the dead. During the quiet summer of 1925, she and her brother, Michael, are thirteen-year-old twins-privileged, precocious, wandering aimlessly around their family's estate. One day, Emily discovers that she can secretly crack her ankle in such a way that a sound appears to burst through the stillness of midair. Emily and Michael gather the neighborhood children to fool them with these "spirit knockings."
Soon, however, this game of contacting the dead creeps into a world of adults still reeling from World War I. When the twins find themselves dabbling in the uncertain territory of human grief and family secrets- knock, knock-everything spins wildly out of control.

Ooh, sorry to hear about the fire! I hope the rain helps them to get it under control -- and if it's arson, I hope they get the person who set it!
Congrats on your ER. I am excited to be receiving a book from one of my favorite series, by one of my favorite authors -- Julia Spencer-Fleming's new book, One Was a Soldier. (Odd, I just mentioned it on my thread and the touchstone worked just fine, but here it is stuck in "Loading . . ." mode.
ETA to fix because the touchstone did "work" -- but for the wrong book!

Hi Kara! I believe this is my first time on your thread? Or I could be wrong, since there are so MANY that I've lost track of which ones I've visited and which ones I haven't :) Just wanted to say you've read some really interesting books! Will have to keep checking to see what other gems I can add to my mountain. :)

Wildfires can be so hard to get under control... so much damage. Sad to think it was started by an arsonist. Have seen them in FL and CO. Not pretty. Hope the flames avoid the homes.

Hi All!!!! Terri, Kath, and Claudia :) All your ER books look good!
Welcome Valerie :) I think this was your first visit, I hope it isn't your last! I will do my best to add more gems to your mountain :)
Fire is still burning....up to 16,000 acres now..some structures lost...winds today will be gusting up to 20-35 mph :( they are afraid that it will get out of control again so fire lines are being dug...did not smell smoke this AM, probably because the wind changed direction last night when our cold front came through. There are "hot spots" that they are watching for flair ups today.

I will say that all the books were used but in GREAT condition! Most of my Hardbacks were library books at one time.
As I was going through the books I found that on the 3rd page of The Widow of the South an autograph from Mr Hicks
To Mary, with my best wishes Robert Hicks
kind of neat I think :)
ETA with 23 books that I snagged...box cost 10$ I think it works out to about .43 cents a book! :)

The Curse of the Wendigo by Rick Yancey 3.75 stars
This is the second book from Yancey that continues the escapades of young Will Henry and Dr. Pellinore Warthrop. This time they are out to save a friend of the doctors from a mythical creature called the Wendingo. A Wendingo is a malevolent cannibalistic spirit into which humans could transform, or which could possess humans. They also represent gluttony, greed, and excess; never satisfied after killing and consuming one person, they are constantly searching for new victims.
New characters are introduced, a little love triangle is exposed and we get to see a softer side of Dr Warthrop. The Curse of the Wendigo is not as action packed as The Monstrumologist nor is it as "bloody"...but it still has terrific characterization and an engrossing storyline along with the tougher vocabulary. I would recommend reading these in order just so you get the back story of young Will Henry and why his journal entries are important to this series. Yancey is probably one of my favorite YA authors now and I can't wait to see where this ongoing story of Will Henry and the monstrumologist Dr Pellinore Warthrop take me.

Kara- I'm a big fan of Child 44 & The Shipping News. I also have Enemy Women, Being Dead & Crow Lake in the stacks.
I really enjoyed the 1st 2 Chaos Walking books. I'm glad you hung in there, it does take a little time to get used to the tone of it.

I am still reading The Knife of Never Letting Go...almost half way....it is starting to pick up now, I was getting a little worried!

Good news about the fire being contained...great news about the plethora of books that you "lucked" into! You got some really great titles and bargains, Kara.
I have to bathe the dog this week. It's my turn. He's an 85-lb. Lab that has to it into a small shower stall. He doesn't mind his back end in there, but his head wants to be out and dripping on me and the floor. Company coming this week end means lots of housecleaning in store for me this week.
I've decided I like the picture you posted in Msg. 1. I was a bit put off at first by the green Persephone and her petulant stare. I "got" the moody look, and her green color makes sense now that I know this is a spring look. Bring it on!

Donna I feel your pain :) my three dogs are 50-60 lbs each...one will jump right into the tub the other two I have to pick up! but then have no problem jumping out when done, go figure!
I can see the petulant stare now that you mentioned it....she is probably irritated that winter is taking so long to leave :)...I saw youthfulness and calm in her face originally.

Your story reminded me of a Golden we had. One summer it was brutally hot and I set up a kiddie pool under a shady tree. He would only get half in. Could not get him to get all four feet in.
My Yellow Lab had her baths in the tub and I was able to train her to shake before she got out. I turned off the water, closed the curtain and she got half of the water off of her. Then I would lay a towel on the living room floor for her to roll around on if it was too cold to go outside. Those Labs are tough to get dry, though, aren't they?

Claudia, I don't miss those days....but I do miss my pom :( I had a teacup pomeranian, weighed no more then 5lbs...bathed her in the sink but then I had to blow dry her out....took forever! She actually was the only dog out of my 4 that would go swimming with me :) I had a little red raft just for her and she would lay on it and float around in the pool all day with me! I need to see if I have a picture of that lying around! She was a great dog...I love her dearly....her name was Sasha
mamzel, I have a lab mix...yes he takes awhile to dry...I use towels on the floor too :)...I think it is the oily skin
kath...70-75 lbs! lifting into tub? what about one of those portable stair/ladder things that can push right up to the tub? I was thinking of getting one of those because my 12 year old shepherd/chow mix has some hip problems... I thought something like that would be easier on him and me!

Some interesting reads here, just added The Curse of Wendigo and the Chaos Walking Trilogy to my wishlist. I finally got The Stolen Child, although I don't know when I'll get to it considering that all I seem to be reading these days are system specifications.

Been here and there :) a little on FB this weekend and a little on LT.
Saturday went to the park and attended a birthday party for a 1 year old :) it was cute and the day was beautiful!
Did lots of reading...almost done with The Ask and the Answer. For a YA series it has some pretty heavy subjects...gender bias, racism, war...
Still need to do my thoughts on The Knife of Never Letting Go, probably later this week...taking 5 days off starting Thurs :)
liezkl...what do you mean by system specifications...something to do with computers?

Watch who you are calling "old" Kath! I have an army, ya know!
Everytime I threaten something, Ron laughs and says
"Yeah, you and your army!" :P
He'd better watch it!
Oh... BTW... any plans for your vaca, Kara?

I cook my corned beef in a crock pot all day :) The fat will cook off and I can strain it out
then I cut up potatoes, carrots, onions...put in a separate pot on the stove, pour the corned beef juice from the crock pot into it....add water if needed (I don't cover the vegetables completely with the liquid...about 3/4 way)....slow boil until done! Cut cabbage into big cubes...add at the very end of cooking on top of vegetables (that's why I only fill 3/4 way) the steam will cook the cabbage :)
Sometimes I will slice the corned beef and lay it on top of the vegetables while they cook :)
easy peasy!

Woah! Kath! You have never had Corned beef before? Get out!
I cook mine all in one big pot.
First, place the corned beef in pot and cover with water. Simmer as long as directed for the size (about 3 hours)
Then, in the last 40 minutes add big hunks of carrots and large pieces of potato... onions if you want. Keep it boiling.
When you're down to about 20 mins... take out the meat and add wedges of cabbage (quartered) on top - if you must! :P Kara's right about the steam.
Don't forget the biscuits! What time is dinner?
Yes, my Dad was in WWI. He was born in 1900 and 48 when I was born. I don't think he was old enough to join the army...but back then they didn't seem to care. He was close enough. :}

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness 3.5 stars
It is difficult to review this book without giving anything away, so I will give a brief summary and some thoughts.
In The Knife of Never Letting Go we are introduced to Todd Hewitt. Todd is the last boy in Prentisstown, the last town on New World. He will become a man in one month's time when he turns thirteen. The reason he is the last boy is because the colonists who arrived from Earth seeking a better, simpler life fought a brutal war with the natives known as Spacks. During this civil war the Spacks released a virus that killed all the women and infected all the men with Noise. Noise is a constant barrage of every man’s thoughts. You are never alone in your own thoughts and in a world of men the Noise is unbearable. But Todd finds something unexpected in the swamp; something that will turn his world upside down. Silence. Everything he knows, or thinks he knows about the history of New World, is wrong, and soon Todd is on the run, pursued by the Prentisstown authorities.
The Knife of Never Letting Go is one long chase scene on a planet where (almost) everyone can hear everyone else's thoughts and there is trouble either happening or about to happen. It was awkward reading in the beginning because Todd is very nearly illiterate and Ness abandons many grammar and spelling rules but not too much so that it becomes confusing to follow. You just need to give it time and you will fall into the rhythm of the POV’s voice. The writing is tight, fast paced and thoughtful. My feet are tired and sore. Hers must be, too. I've got blisters and aches and my heart hurts from all I miss and all thats gone. And hers does, too. But we run. Boy, do we run. Cuz maybe (shut up)--Just maybe (don't think it)--Maybe there really is hope at the end of the road.
Have Book 2 The Ask and The Answer ready to pick up immediately after finishing this one….major cliffhanger at the end of The Knife of Never Letting Go

The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness 3.75 stars

The Ask and the Answer starts right where The Knife of Never Letting Go left off. Again it is difficult to review this book without giving anything away.
Although the pace of this book is less frantic than in The Knife of Never Letting Go, that does not mean less happens. If anything the plot is even more frantic in this one with even more twists and turns. In this book enemies become friends and friends become enemies. The Chaos Walking books are really all about the strength of their characters. And in The Ask and the Answer, the characters we know and love (and some that we hate with every fiber of our beings) are back with a vengeance, just as compelling as we remember them from The Knife of Never Letting Go, but growing and changing too . Characters you love are forced to do horrible, horrible things. Characters you hate with a passion, you are forced to reassess and identify (if not agree) with their motives. Things are not always black and white now. And the shades of gray can be very dangerous.
One overarching theme of this book is war - the harshness, the necessity, and the fascination of it. The more we are aware of what goes on “on the ground” in war time, the war crimes, the things people will do and suffer through just to survive, the more we can hear phrases, such as, “If not us, then who? At least we will do it with some level of humanity…” and only be shocked at what is being done, not that someone had to say it, then the more harrowing this book gets.
Themes of dictatorship, terrorism, genocide and slavery reign. Driven by politics and tackling some big questions about absolute power, imprisonment, and even insurgent terrorism, this second book is a very timely and intelligent novel but never feels heavy-handed or condescending. These Chaos Walking books are marketed as books of YA dystopian sci-fi, I think their sophistication and the life experience required to understand their sentiment makes them even more meaningful for adults.

I have one dog that will tattle on the others....he will come and sit by the couch looking all worried and he will not move until someone gets up to see what the others are into...it usually means one is eating the toilet paper from the roller or rummaging in the bathroom trash :)
had a busy day today
went to visit our neighbor in the hospital who had most of his liver removed due to cancer...he is doing well, considering...little jaundice, which has me concerned...but he is in good spirits :)
then Jorge took me out to dinner to the Cheesecake factory! yum..along with our doggie bag from dinner we brought home 2 huge slices of cheesecake....a carrot cake cheesecake and a chocolate mousse cheesecake :)
no reading was done today but maybe I can get some in while I devour that chocolate mousse cheesecake :)

It is the darndest thing.. I have never been able to read one of her books. I have bought several.. and given them away..

Kara, do you still need help to print your wishlist? Go to the view for "Your Books" and choose "wishlist" from the drop-down box near the upper left-hand corner. You'll see just your wishlist books. Then, look straight across from that and about halfway across the page you'll see a printer icon -- it's the very last icon in the row. Click that, and a printable list will come up.
Before you go to that print icon, you may want to edit one of the views (A through E) to show limited information fields so the list doesn't take up too much paper. I generally designate one of the views to just include title, author, and CK Series (I read a lot of series and like to read them in order) and print with that view selected. The little icon that looks sort of like a gear or a bumpy wheel or a flower -- right after the ones for A, B, C, D, E -- lets you edit the view styles. To leave a field blank, pick one of the rows with all dashes. Back on the main page, the arrow icon lets you edit how they're ordered (by title, by author).
I hope that helps.

Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness 4.25 stars

What a great book to end this trilogy....but, I hope Patrick Ness comes out with a fourth. The ending of Monsters of Men wraps up nicely but it does leave it open for him to explore the future of the two main characters (Todd and Viola), if there is one. Adventure and discord still abound in this third book but what I really liked was the progression of the innocent love that transpires between Todd and Viola. It was heartfelt, not mushy.
Nice climatic ending, redemption for some and personal growth for others.
I totally recommend this series.

The Swan Thieves
Water Witches
The Wasp Factory
my poor husband, I told him last night while standing in the middle of my living room that I needed for him to build me another bookcase :) he just looked at me LOL he built my first one but I think he is going to opt out of building a second one.
I have 2 more chapters of The Hunger Games...gosh Mark you were right it is pretty fantastic! did you know that Jennifer Lawrence from Winter's Bone is playing Katniss in the movie?? There is some talk of "whitewashing" for the part of Katniss. Katniss is clearly not Caucasian, it is mentioned in the book that she has dark, olive-colored skin.

LT book description:
In Sawgamet, a north woods boomtown gone bust, the cold of winter breaks the glass of the schoolhouse thermometer, and the dangers of working in the cuts are overshadowed by the mysteries and magic lurking in the woods. Stephen, a pastor, is at home on the eve of his mother's funeral, thirty years after the mythic summer his grandfather returned to the town in search of his beloved but long-dead wife. And like his grandfather, Stephen is forced to confront the losses of his past.
Touch introduces you to a world where monsters and witches oppose singing dogs and golden caribou, where the living and the dead part and meet again in the crippling beauty of winter and the surreal haze of summer.
blasted touchstones..... :(

if you haven't read it...do so, this is one heck of a ride!!
Catching Fire book 2 is next :)

The Hunger Games is on The List... There are about a million holds on it at the library, and my trusty used bookstore can't keep any copies in stock so I'll have to wait a bit longer.

Got a bit behind on your thread. I hope you are feeling better. I liked The Wasp Factory although I remember it being very dark. (The dog video was too cute, btw!)

#123 Sorry to hear that the germs gotcha! I hope you enjoy your new books. I really enjoyed So Cold the River. It's a very different kind of horror book. I love the way he worked with the history of the area in which it's set. I actually did some "research" online about the hotels and the water after I read it.

feeling so so.... sneezing like a champ :)
not working late kath, but still working :)
weather has been terrible here the past 2 days...severe thunderstorms, tornados eek!
had to pull over into a gas station today on my way into work because I just couldn't see with the rain coming sideways...sky was so dark, scary
I need to build an Ark with all this rain...my feet are cold and damp...I wanna go home and just curl up and snooze

Newbie, here!!
I empathize with the sinus woes...I am suffering (again) today with stuffy head, but no earache!!!
My feet are beginning to "web", I swear!
Love the Amanda Clark painting..and your choice of reading matter...eerily familiar, the latter...

Well I'll be damned, look what the cat dragged in...Miss Jude herself!! :) glad to see you! don't be a stranger... you are the first one that said you LOVED the Amanda Clark painting :) I thought maybe she scared my visitors ;) I have become quite fond of her! I need to browse your library since we have 169 books in common :) and you say our choice in reading matter is eerily familiar!
Thanks everyone! I do feel somewhat better :) still a little bit of a cough
no headache today...I had that damn thing until 9pm last night! wanted to just rip my head off my neck and be done with it ;)
today has been beautiful...80, breezy, low humidity....just lovely, had my coffee on the porch and just enjoyed the birds, the breeze, and the quiet :)
I am reading Catching Fire but prior to receiving it from the library I started Full Dark, No Stars, short story book by King. I have finished 2 out of the 4 stories....very good :)

Well, if that lovely day doesn't cure all your ills, I don't know what will!
So glad you are better and able to rest up. :)
re the AC painting: I do think it is beautiful...
but the green face takes some getting used to.... and I'm working on it.
I know, I know - symbolic of spring, seeds, vegetation, etc.

The reason that i love THE PAINTING....my house is painted in deep blue/red/eggshell..going up the walls..so...the AC painting would work for me...not "eerie" but beautiful
I guess I should post pictures of my house/rooms???
Jeesh, i'm a dummy at times

yah jude pics??
i shouldn't talk, I haven't posted any pics of savannah yet :/

severe thunderstorms here today until 3pm :( would rather be home sleeping or reading instead of working but such is life........
I am flying through Catching Fire this series is really good! Collins really likes to throw curve balls at you just when you think things have calmed down and everything is alright...what can she possibly do in Mockingjay? that hasn't already been done in the first 2 books???
I have a feeling this whole series is going to be a ride to remember :)

no.. but there is a blogger community.. people you meet..
other people who comment, and whose blogs you can visit..
That sort of thing. I don't do much customizing.. I like it to be plain.
Also, sometimes authors seek you out and comment.. which is fun..
I have had that happen a time or two..

Kara, I'm all caught up with you now. Enjoy your week-end; so sorry that you have an annoying supervisor to deal with all week. It's hard to tune out music that grates on your nerves.
I wish I had the time to read some of the blogs out there. As it is, I've pretty much given up FB unless somebody sends me a message. LT is time-consuming enough for me. And now that nice weather is here...I'm heading outside until it gets hot and humid.
My daughter and DILs loved the Hunger Game series, but I know myself well enough to realize they're not for me. I'll never know for sure! I thought the same thing about Larsson's "The Girl Who..." series and ended up loving it. Isn't there a saying about "too many books"? ;-)

Donna, if you liked Larsson's "The Girl Who..." series you would like the Hunger game series :) it is YA so the violence is not so "adult" and they are a really quick read :) I hated putting down the first book...was always thinking what was going to happen next.
Thanks Terri! you have a great one too :) nope, today is my day :) nap, read, and LT! no rude people allowed!
