This is the discussion thread for the "book that you should borrow from the person below you challenge". The main TIOLI thread is here. The sign-up thread is here.

The challenge is to Read a book that you should borrow from the person below you. So, it's another "below you" challenge; there will be a sign-up thread where anyone who wants to participate will post, and your choices will be based on the person who posts just after you.

"A book you should borrow" is based on LT's new What Should You Borrow? feature, described here. You can see, for example, what books Tim should borrow from Jeremy.

I don't know that there's a convenient link to see what you should borrow from someone else, but you can go to the page for Tim and Jeremy and just replace their names in the address with yours and the other person's.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Oh, and if you complete your book, you can either choose another book from the same person or move on to the next person down! I got lucky with Mary (bell7) coming after me, so my first pick at least will be very easy.

This looks like a great challenge. Now I just have to wait. What happens if no one posts below you? I know it is early but just wondering what would that person do.

Last time I said that they could go back up to the top if no one posted for 24 hours, and if someone did post after that, they had a choice of two people.

Can I match a book that someone else is reading?

Hi Zoe, just a quick clarification. Sorry if that is totally a dumb question, but I just wanted to make sure that the list that I'm looking for is "Jolerie should borrow from Zoe's" list if you where the person that is below me.

Okay, so, I signed up in the sign-up thread and finally got around to going back and finding out who signed up right after me. It's dragonsoup. So, I've picked a book LT says I should borrow from dragonsoup. Zoe, are you doing the adding to the wiki for points or should we do that?

I love "person below you" challenges, but they are a bit complicated (of course, that's inherent in what makes them fun!).

>9 EBT1002:: Sorry I'm not Zoe and can't answer your question and apologies if this is the wrong place to post this- but I would love to know which book you chose, Ellen!

Hi Dee - I edited my original sign-up post. Going with Mrs. Dalloway but reserving the right to read one of the Kate Atkinson options..... Your reading taste has some good overlap with mine!

Thanks Ellen- I should have checked. I'm pleased you were happy with the choice!

Hi Ellen --

Just so you know, I'm 'borrowing' Death Comes for the Archbishop by Willa Cather from you.

Thanks!

Anyone can do it but no one has to do it. At any rate, I'll eventually get to it if no one else does! :D

> 13 I hope you enjoy it. It's been a while since I read it but it's truly a classic.

> 14 Well, I went in and was going to start adding them in the order in which people signed up - then realized it's in alphabetical our other lists are. Tried to help. ;-)

From Cait86 I have decided on Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I read this book years and years ago in school and now would like to see it through more mature eyes.

I sometimes update points for my challenges throughout the month, but I have to admit that I usually leave it to Madeline.

Zoe, I do have a question. Humouress signed in below me (thank goodness!) but the borrow feature shows only 6 books for me from her library. I've read 3 of them, and of the rest, two are in a series and I haven't gotten that far yet, and the last is about the series and is a book that I can't get. May I go back to the top? Or read something from my library that was recommended to her?

19_Zoe_

Someone else had this issue too; I said they could either choose a non-recommended book from their person's library, or skip down to the next person on the list (which may end up being the top). I hope that's fair.

What I did was check the borrow function before I posted to make sure the person "above" had at least two dozen books they could borrow.

Just a tip.

Oh, that's a good idea! I should have thought of that before.

I had misunderstood the challenge initially, thinking I was supposed to choose any book from Donna's library, not just the ones utilizing the new LT function. I have now corrected my error and put Black Swan Green by David Mitchell on the wiki. I have been meaning to get to the book for at least 3 years now and it seems like I will finally do so!

I managed to get a copy of one of the books I should borrow from cbl_tn.

So I'll be reading An Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears.

O.K. This is good. I'm going to be reading The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss from Humouress.

>22 alcottacre: Oops, sorry the instructions weren't clear!

I've done a bit of peeking ahead, optimistically. I've started The Ask and the Answer and expect to be done in a couple of days, so I may go on to read The Help or The Tipping Point from AnneDC, then maybe The Picture of Dorian Gray from CatyM, and Leviathan from calm....

I only got nine choices when I ran the app, but thankfully the first one was The Thirteenth Tale, which I'd been wanting to read forever, so I'm going with that.

My "person" is Cindy (countrylife), and I've been trying to decide between Sarah's Key and The Whistling Season. Since I plan to read English Creek by Doig for the "Ends in middle initial" challenge, I'm going with Sarah. Bonus for me because I own this one.

I just got a notification from the library that my book for this challenge is available for download now. I'll start on it as soon as I finish my current audio (probably this weekend). I should have plenty of time to finish it by the end of the month.

20: I checked in to the sign-up thread a few times and did the same, decided that my library would make somebody sad.

Jul 14, 2011, 5:43 pm

Your library makes me *happy*, qebo! (Although I'm already signed up with this challenge.) But I know what you mean; I abstained from a similar kind of challenge a few months ago for the same reason.

Jul 21, 2011, 6:31 am

Ack, I'm sorry if anyone is missing out because they don't think their library is appealing enough! Please don't worry about it. It's not too late to sign up now....

I've just read the book that I thought I was meant to be reading for this challenge, but when I went back to check the list, I found a different book by the same author listed. As it happens, I have already read that book also, so I've managed the challenge either way.

I was sure when I first looked at the list of books I should borrow from Monica (crazy4reading) it listed The moving finger by Agatha Christie. Now I see not that one, but another Christie - The Body in the Library. Has anyone else found the list of recommendations changing? I guess it may be affected constantly by updates in each person's library.

>32 gennyt:: Genny, did you add the book to your library after first looking at the list of books to borrow?

34_Zoe_
Jul 22, 2011, 4:32 pm

Yes, if you add the book to your catalogue, it will no longer show up as a recommendation.

35gennyt
Edited: Jul 22, 2011, 6:22 pm

Yes, you are correct, and that makes sense of course! I did add the book after picking up the recommendation and acquiring a copy. I was confused by the fact that a different Christie was shown instead, which I had also just read and which I thought was already in my library - but then I discovered I had not yet added that one, so as it happened to be in the other library it was showing as the next best alternative presumably. Now I've added that one, and it too has disappeared from the list.

Well I finished my book to borrow yesterday. I read The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I had the book on the kindle app on my phone but never added it to my library.

I read mine on Friday night- Heaven Eyes by David Almond. It was rather strange but poignant and very moving. I'm pleased I joined in the challenge as I don't think I would have read it otherwise.

I finished my book yesterday. I listened to the audio version Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. It's a book I've been meaning to get to for some time, and I'm glad that I finally got around to it, thanks to this challenge.
