I have just finished this fantastic book by Robert Burchfield, a previous editor of the OED.
Divided into ten chapters it gives an excellent thorough introduction to the roots of Modern English and different facets to it, like slang, pronunciation, dialects, regional variants, grammars, dictionaries and so much more.
