I re-connected with my cousin Rebecca/Becky.....whom I haven't seen since 1969......I wasn't allowed to use the phone...when I was a kid...so, could never call anyone (this was way before cell phones) never mind cousins

My father once, ripped the phone cord out the wall, when he thought my Mom was talking too much

My Dad trashed the kitchen, because he couldn't find a particular item in a drawer

My Dad trashed the entire garage...for whatever reason

I come from two people with serious mental/emotional Issues...i am their daughter.......with a healthy sense of humour/irony

I am here, on LT

Do you still want to be my Friend? Think about it......

Jude I have a feeling that your eyes could be similar to Jack Nicholson's in The Shining!
Anyway what the hell idiosyncracies in our friends are to be cherished and encouraged - reminders of difficult times growing up should also remind us how well we did to get past them and to where we are now.

My MIL so hated me when I "stole" her daughter - prior to marriage anyway - She had been engaged to a "good family" in Johor Bahru, Malaysia when yours truly came along and made eyes at her eldest girl. To stop us from contacting each other she used to take the house telephone out with her in her handbag. Hani ran away from home and I put her in an apartment in Kuala Lumpur which was a brave thing for a young muslim lady to do in 1995. Being adept at negotiation I managed to strike a deal with the mother that she would allow us to date if I brought Hani back to the family home - she kept her word and got herself a SIL. Now she and I are extremely close and she is normally a useful ally to take the corners of SHE-WHO-MUST-BE-OBEYED's temper.

Oct 24, 2011, 7:49 am

Bah, we're book readers Jude, we're good at rising above silly childhood psychology and seeing issues from the outside looking in. We do it every time we read a novel. My dad was very 'absent' and later cheated on my mom, and my mom is a sexist, and an aggressive, judgemental, argumentative hatemonger who thrives on anger and fighting with others.

Certainly I am neither of those things.

You're great, Jude, regardless of how your parents may have behaved.

Now, this cousin Rebecca, the re-connection is a good thing, no? :)

"idiosyncracies in our friends are to be cherished and encouraged - reminders of difficult times growing up should also remind us how well we did to get past them and to where we are now."

I like that Paul. and I agree...

We all do the best we can. Being human is not easy. Still trying to figure out the sense of it myownself! :PPPP

I was not allowed to use the phone either. (So - no friends.) Now, I have something of an aversion to it. *shrug* Makes me uncomfortable even 50 years later. What made things worse, was not allowed to join in school activities or go out after dark. Even with other parents in charge. My teen years were hell.

Dad was an alcoholic; Mom was never able to demonstrate love and kindness to her kids - or stand up for us against Dad. Oh yeah... I am still messed up from all that. But like Paul said, somehow we got past all that to a better place. Admittedly, still working on it all.

The blessings in life are the people we have met and loved for different reasons - and have shown us the brighter side of things. Gives us hope... however little it may be.

You are a unique and fun friend. You make my life brighter many times over. ;-)

34Mr.Durick

I think that if we try to cheerlead our way past these things that bahzah has noticed meaningfully:
Still trying to figure out the sense of it myownself!

Admittedly, still working on it all.
we will drive ourselves deeper underground. As of a recent birthday I am 67 years old and still working at the shortcomings my useless parents induced in me. There are some pains that will never be overcome, and, from my experience, some that I think that will never be overcome that will resolve themselves.

Oh Lord, preserve us all.

Hi, Jude!

Hi Robert,
I have no real intention of driving myself deeper underground. And... I am anything but a cheerleader.
I'm not sure what your point is - but I do agree there are pains that will never be overcome or resolved in this lifetime... maybe never. However, I need to move on in life and cherish the good I find around me. I forgive my parents because I believe they did not know any better and did the best they could under the circumstances. They have their own stories.

Thank you all for your kind, understanding words. I'm sorry that my Pity Party spilled over here, on LT. I try to keep my meeping self-pity to a minimum, even in RL...but sometimes I fail.

My parents are dead, I know...but their shades jump up and bite me on the ass when I'm feeling low...and I go back to my former geeky, frightened self...and I hate that...the person and the act!

Any way..I'm feeling better this morning. The sun is shining and I have the whole day ahead of me...not too shabby!

Woke up to a hellacious thunderstorm...lights flickering...thunder booming. I was tempted to stay in bed, but I have to get out of the house at least one day per week..

Finished The Dressmaker last evening. It won't ever set the world on fire as literature, but it was a pretty good read...after a rather stilted beginning. Not my genre of choice, but the romance angle wasn't lurid or sappy. Hey, I finished the book without gagging!

Me too, except replace "coffee (am)" with "water (am)." I do usually treat myself to something horribly sugar-filled and nauseating to go along with the greasy pizza I eat every week or two though. :)

Touchpad keyboards... *Shudders* I can't even type well on laptop keyboards. Too flat. I need big, raised, widely-spaced buttons with curvature and enough resistance to require a bit of forcible pressure with each stroke, otherwise I just make a mess of everything. #61 Jude hilarious together with interesting/disturbing mental image courtesy of Stephen. Halloween is not oft associated with erotica mores the pity.

All this talk about snow made me wonder again do I miss my four seasons here in Kuala Lumpur with 33deg temps every day and humidity in the 90 percentile daily. Getting the vibe of a continental mope from the Americas makes me pretty damn happy to be where I am (smiling smugly).

All the talk of cabbage (which I also like) got me thinking that I enjoy discussing food almost as much as books.

#74 Hallo, Paul

Trust Stephen to supply all sorts of images, disturbing and otherwise...I've seen some pretty sexy Halloween witches in my day...even dressed up (or down) as one...a time or two

I don't know...i am not comfortable with high temps/humidity...I would rather be here in Ohio..where we've been known to have at least three seasons in one day (Spring or Fall, it's a coin toss)...besides. the weather gives me something to bitch about, that is totally out of my control.

I like to discuss food and cooking...because that's how I eat....i live a bit too far out of town to make a "quick stop for a sandwich" practical...Besides, I make better sandwiches at home than the ones i can get in town..I am a good cook...there, I said it...Food & Books...the Stuff of life, no?

I was talking genuine vegetable cooking. I had imagined putting a whole cabbage with the core knocked out and slathered in butter on, say, a roaster rack, and cooking it until it was hot all the way through. I didn't even know whether that would work, but it sounded good.

Now you tell me that there's some grating involved.

Robert

84jdthloue
Edited: Oct 29, 2011, 4:07 pm

Robert...roasted cabbage is delicious...it just takes time...I would suggest roasting it in wedges (with or without the core).....make sure you use enough butter/olive oil.....maybe cover it with foil if it starts to brown quickly....

My recipe was for grated cabbage...and I don't "boil" it...I let it simmer in its own juice and get a little brown

roasted cabbage..i have no recipe..i'll look for a link...will post one as soon as..

and here it is.....simple, and it seems to be versatile..should there be leftovers:

Trick-or-Treat was last Thursday...here...and I live too far out of town to get any little buggers...I mean beggars.....

No Rice Krispie treats...but I have Pecan Sandies and hot green tea

Felt rather crappy today...slept badly last night with weird nightmares...I mean, I know it's Halloween and all, but enough already.

Was actually hungry today, though...and mixed up some fancy hamburgers (onion/garlic/chopped mushroom/????)...baked them. Made a big pot of mashed potatoes...I am full!!! and ready for bed...

Reading odd/creepy "fluff".....The Witch's Ladder...Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys go Paranormal...but these folks would have a hard time organizing lunch..never mind the death of one who is supposedly "pure Evil"....I have chuckled.

Milrose Munce and the Den of Professional Help is Harry Potter/Hogwarts turned upside down.....nothing magical here...just sad "ghosts" of kids who died tragically...and stupidly...and the trials of said Milrose.....who finds out he's in need of Professional Help...this one really is funny.....sad, sarcastic, and funny....Lemony Snicket fans, take note!

I haven't had much of an appetite lately...and figured i needed protein..so I made two "fancy" burgers...baked them in the oven...and made a pot of mashers...ate most of the potatoes...naturally...

Paul: What isn't wrong with onions? They're disgusting. I am of a logical-thinking sort, a firm believer in evolution and the slow development of life through constant adaptation to an ever-changing environment. However, onions make a strong case for divine creation. They are obviously Luciferian, or some god or another's ideal of punishment to those sensible enough to realize how revolting onions are. Plus, onions kill brain cells and diminish the soul. It's true...granted I made it up out of thin air but surely it can be proven scientifically. At the very least, a person must have dull taste buds not to taste their utter rancidity. Everyone knows Jesus punishes sinners but dulling their taste buds, so there, PROOF!! ...

I have to say that I didn't understand how some of these parents were willing to take
their toddlers out in steady cold rain, many of them dressed without any jacket or warmth

let them put on their costumes and made popcorn and handed over some of the treat I had to hand out..

#144 And there we have Stephen's rationale for despising that most pungent of tubers. Good attempt at creating science but I'm still of the view: "what the hell's wrong with onions?" Strangely enough my original career mentor a certain Brian Quinn was paranoically averse to onions and we used to secrete them around his desk for the fun of seeing his desperation in seeking their removal. Btw Luciferian is wonderful description - if it is not a real word it bloody well should be!

Mhmm, I'm not a picky eater, I'll eat just about anything really, but I have my preferences, and while there are foods I would never voluntarily eat and perfectly okay with eating them if that's what's available.

Like onions. Or thick chunks of tomatoes in soups/pasta. Or cheese on broccoli and carrots. Broccoli and carrots is one of the most amazing combinations ever, can't imagine why anyone would want to ruin the 3rd or 4th most delicious flavor imaginable with cheese! :(

158PaulCranswick
Nov 2, 2011, 8:59 am

#157 Now Stephen on some of this we can agree. There is little worse than scalding lumps of tomato in soup (although the flavour if blended is great) - cauliflower and macaroni cheese are also dreadful concoctions - dont mind the cheese so much but why go to all that trouble to sour the milk and churn it into cheese to then liquify it and pour it all over tastless vegetables?

159mckait
Nov 2, 2011, 10:04 am

Stunned by the discovery that there are people who do not think cheese improves anything. It is like bacon. Add it to anything and that makes it better. Carrots are not good in anything but soup. Like Lima beans. :) They are soup vegies.

Jude! glad you had a surprise couch day :)
Catching up is okay if you have a good reason :)

160Ape
Nov 2, 2011, 11:52 am

Cheese makes 99 percent of things better. Excpet Carrots+Broccoli, unless it's carrots+broccoli+pasta+chicken, because by then the carrots+broccoli taste isn't present in the dish to begin with.

Cheese and non-fried chicken is another top combination. Chunks of chicken mixed with rice and broccoli and covered in cheese is fantastic. Wish I could make it myself. Yay for microwaves? :(

161ChelleBearss

Edited: Nov 2, 2011, 2:44 pm

Jeesh, all this food talk...it's a good thing i cooked today!

I'll weigh in now as a Lima bean lover.....been one since I was a kid!. I prefer cauliflower raw.....but love broccoli both raw and cooked...I don't like cheese sauce on veggies...but love Mac-n-Cheese (the only reason i keep a little box of Velveeta in the fridge)...otherwise I agree, cheese ranks up there with bacon as a Major Food!

So, today...i roasted fresh broccoli (with a little oil, minced garlic, salt & pepper) in a 425F oven.....gives the florets nice "crunchy" spots.....drizzled it with some lemon juice...Ahhhh1

Marinated venison loin in a sesame/ginger marinade....and "burned" it in a hot skillet with some sliced onion...and the leftover marinade..

Garlic bread to mop up the juices...

I think this is what Stephen mentioned....chicken/rice/broccoli casserole. I've made so many of these, to take to Pot Luck dinners!!!!

I agree with Kath that cheese improves just about anything it touches (except the pages of a book, perhaps)/
I agree with Jude about lotion tissues -- ugh! (now those may deserve the adjective Luciferian!)
and I definitely agree with Jude about garlic mashed potatoes. (Heavenly indeed!)

Having had my say on these weighty subjects (as in, all this food talk could add ten pounds to my weight) I shall bid you adieu!

**Waving back**

Mark has been out here...yesterday and today...cutting firewood. I made Chicken Broth yesterday...and Southwest Chicken soup today...it is goood...nothing beats homemade broth. I do put shredded cheese on top...along w/tortilla chips...

Not much else going on...spent yesterday afternoon clearing tree trash from the yard...it's still too wet to cut the grass where it really needs it....oy!

Trying to finish my "fluff" reads so I can get back to, more or less, serious stuff....Man. "fluff" can be long-winded!

Hope all's well with my Peeps...

I think I will gormandize at the Costco food court. Do you ever do that, or do you always cook?

Kath, because you're a dear friend, I won't take you up on that bet because you'd lose, and I'd so hate to see you in the workhouse scrubbing floors and emptying the rat traps.

BUT, I'll take the breadcrumbs, butter, garlic and add that to steamed broccoli ... yummy! I love that.

Jude, it's funny but since I asked what lotion tissues were, I suddenly noticed them in the supermarket this evening. I wonder why I never noticed them before. Thanks for the warning ... I'll keep away from them.. can't imagine a greasy tissue.

I think I may need to resort to some fluff read tonight too, Jude ... brain needs a dusting.

Robert:

I love the "link"!

I usually cook....because I like to know what's in my food...and, because I live too far from town to be able to "pop in" for a sandwich, or whatever. There aren't any good restaurants in town, just the usual Fast Food joints and several homestyle eateries...where the fare is high in salt & fat (not that I disdain s & f...but I don't want a lot of it, on a daily basis). I'll get a rotisserie chicken (or two) at the grocery if I know that I won't be in the mood to slave over a hot stove.....other than that, it's me and my cookware! And my six shelves of cookbooks!

Caro:

...my recent "fluff" reading has cleared many cobwebs from my mind....and given my laugh muscles a workout! Highly recommended.

Lotion tissues "might" be good if one has a bad cold and is constantly nose blowing...but for god's sakes...don't mistakenly try to clean your glasses with one.......urgh, that really is gross!

Hi Jude- Hope you are enjoying your day and your fluff! Glad the other Mark in your life came by to do the firewood. I'm sure that's a major task.

Mark...saw your review of Feed...good job! Book is already on The List....

Firewood cutting is a major chore...that's why I don't do it...other than the fact that I don't "do" chainsaws...He's leaving the wood cut & stacked out in the woods....so I can use up what's in the garage....

Any way, I made Southwest chicken soup this morning....and sent a container home with him...ain't I sweet?

Reading wise...i have to get back on track...too much silliness...

Not much going on today...got up early to do laundry (no clean clothes at all, eek!)....then everything went downhill...feeling tired but not achy...nearly done with the "fluff" reads. Then on to sterner stuff...I have Ashes to Dust as a Net Galley...new Scandi-crime.....I am curious as to its merits...ahem!

Don't forget to turn the clocks back, peeps....wouldn't want y'all to be embarrassed tomorrow....

#19 The Witch's Ladder by Dana Donovan

If you're not already "into" Paranormal Lit....you might want to take a pass on this one..

Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys do Paranormal??? This clueless bunch of psychics could barely organize lunch...never mind the murder of one of their own...who embodies the "soul of all evil" (my quotes..not the author's)

The narrative bounces between snippets of "lectures" on all this paranormal....and trendy, Hip dialogue...a bit disconcerting. All of the stereotypes are here....as well as the funky fogs and spontaneous tornadoes/earthquakes/water spouts. There is grisly murder, complete with evisceration....."tribal" jealousy....a gambling jones....and a stalwart Policeman/convert.

I don't mean to make a complete hash of this book. It is not my genre-of-choice...but I was in the mood for "fluff" and I don't do romance...The plot was strong enough that it held my interest...but, I am a born skeptic. Things that "go bump in the night" probably do so for a very good reason...I like my Mysteries without the "hocus pocus". I will say, reading this book gave my Laugh muscles a workout!

Recommended to the already-converted...others, beware

(2 1/2 Stars)

***I'm going backward with the reviews that I owe. This one was easy...because the genre isn't my usual fare...for "fluff" it wasn't bad....well, almost***

Hi Jude- It doesn't look like The Witch's Ladder is my cuppa but your review was entertaining. Have you read early Joan Didion? I just received a battered copy of Slouching Towards Bethlehem. It sounds very good.
Have a good evening!

198jdthloue
Nov 5, 2011, 7:54 pm

Read Slouching Towards Bethlehem back in the 60s...when it was first published. I loved the book...still do...unfortunately, my copy has gone AWOL. I have a copy, still, of Play It As It Lays....not for the faint-hearted. Ms Didion possesses the keenest "eye" of any writer I know. I want to read her book about California...where she grew up! I read her fiction back in the 80s &90s...yep, I think I "know" her work

;-}

199LovingLit

...so behind....read the middle lot of posts about onions (really stephen...again with the onions?) and potatoes. Always good to discuss vegetable, *ahem*, moving on.

Turning clocks back ay? We just put ours forward a few weeks ago. Now it's light til 8.30pm. YAY. More frisbee in the back garden for me! (once little Lenny starts going to bed before 9pm that is...OK maybe next Spring there'll be more frisbee)

Now that's my girl! I knew you would be familiar with Didion's earlier work. I posted a comment about her & this book awhile back and never got a nibble. I have only read The Year of Magical Thinking.

Paul- LOL. Actually, you could be right! This edition is from '68 and looks like it's been "around".

BTW- I love the gal at the top of the thread! she looks like she might be fun to have around.

202jdthloue
Nov 6, 2011, 10:41 am

Mark:

Where I Was From is the Didion book I really want to read! About her growing up in California...how the place has changed over time..never read Year of Magical Thinking....dunno why. But i lived Political Fictions!

I don't think your copy of Slouching.... is the one i "lost"...your copy is only "battered".....mine would have been "bruised"...with an ear hanging lop-sided!

#16 Call Me Princess by Sara Blaedel

A young woman is brutally raped in her own home and Detective Inspector Louise Rick is given the case. Subsequent investigation reveals the fact that the young woman met her assailant at an online dating website.

The perils of Online Dating are the focus of this story. The ubiquity of the phenomenon and the supposed anonymity of the participants.

I found this to be a good mystery, story wise....but the entire tone of the book was a bit dry, and bloodless. Something I'll chalk up to it being a translation. I did not find it as compelling as Stieg Larsson's work...to which it's been compared. ScandiCrime has become one of the darlings in publishing, lately....and any work containing potential "thrills" seems to be fair game. a pity, that..since this book is pretty low key. The addition of glimpses into Rick"s rocky personal life was a good touch....lacking sentimentality, they, again, proved that high stress jobs wreck havoc on romance.

There were enough plot twists in the story to keep it moving...some good insights into the feeding frenzy of the "tabloid" publishing mentality....and the fact that every job situation has its pompous dead weight.

I did enjoy this book, and would like to read more of Ms Blaedel's work. Recommended, but don't expect heart-stopping thrills...Louise Rick is no Liz Salander...but she works hard and gets the job done.
