I am looking for a book that I read at least 25 years ago and the book it self may be older. My older brother read it as well and for 25 years he has been asking if there was as sequel to it. It involves a group of people landing on a big island on another planet. They found the island is awash with large and terrible creatures. They finally start to get control of their environment when they find out there is a large continent not to far away from the island with even larger and more dangerous creatures and all the creatures are starting to head towards the island and that is how the books ends with the colonist getting ready to head to the continent.

Legacy of Heorot - Niven, Pournelle, Barnes and the sequel was Beowulf's Children.
Actually there is a sort of sequel to the sequel. Part of the plot of the two books is the idea of the Earth space colonization effort. In the these books part of the story is the information from Earth that the effort has been terminated. The book Destiny's Road - set on a completely different planet - is a resumption of this colonization effort and there is a mention in that book about the Avalon effort (the planet in the first two books) and the lessons learned.

That is it. I can't believe that it was by Niven. I have read so many of his books and never read that one again after the first time. Thanks for the info.
