Hi! I'm Ellen

Hi, 75+ers!! I saw this last year and took on a resolution of my own to tackle 75 books in 2011. I did well. I lurked and took some suggestions....but, I tend to read best sellers and chic lit fluff. I was soooooooooooooo happy to find out grown ups can read young adult fiction (YA) and I've discovered some good stuff. Yay!

I'm excited to join you guys officially and resolve myself to another 75 this year.

I don't know how to start a "thread" so I hope someone helps me out.

In 2011 I discovered Sookie Stackhouse and True Blood and read all those books. Hate sookie. Love everyone else. :)

I'm nearly finished Christopher Moore's bibliography and after running out of Tom Robbins..I was so pleased to find another genius lunatic!

What else did I read last year?? hummmmmmmm

A bunch of forgettable stuff unfortunately.

Oh! I did "read" The Help on audio. It was my first audio book and I loved it and I'm hooked!!! I got some shitty radio announcer narratives and then I discovered Sophia Kinsella and the humor and english accents really made it for me. ha ha ha

I'm very excited to share my reads with you folks without judgement or criticism and to be turned on to some things outside my "comfort zone"

My "comfort zone" is anything outside reality. I enjoy fiction. But, I do hope to read some non fiction biography type stuff this coming year. Also, some self help things I've normally shunned, including but not limited to..theology, abasement, wicca, forlornness and whatnot and stuff about food :)

#1 To Fetch a Thief Spencer Quinn

3rd book in the Chet & Bernie mystery series. I enjoyed this one as well as the others and I look forward to reading the 4th. Chet is a great dog and a great narrator. I really enjoy how he embraces his dog self and his doggie ways. Fun read.

Hello, Ellen! I read chick lit, too. Sometimes I just like to be entertained and read fluff.

I've never heard of the Chet & Bernie series...sounds fun!

It's so funny that when I joined LT I basically read only chicklit and now I hardly have time each year to read a few good romances. You'll see that your reading will expand into other things as you see and read about what others here are reading.

#2 Hissy Fit: A Novel

This was my first book by Mary Kay Andrews. I did enjoy it and I'm sure I'll read another 1 or 3 of her books in the near future. It wasn't anything deep....that's for sure. I was surprisingly intrigued by the interior design aspect. It had a nice feel for the south and all the characters were amusing. I had a lovely day with Keeley and her hissy fits :)

The Vampire Prince - Darren Shan



Book 6 in the Cirque de Freak series. What can I say? These are very quick reads and I find them entertaining. I plan on finishing the series this year. I was turned onto them by a friend and they have also recommended another series...supernatural or something like that?

Beach reading sounds very good! I wish I had a beach nearby.

Hi, Alcottacre. It is nice living in a beach town. Today I went to Pasadena to see the Rose Bowl floats and it was very hot. Uncomfortable hot.

They were if you were right up on them....but walking around it wasn't the heavenly overwhelming scent you would imagine. The floats were incredible though....especially to see them up close.

I'm an avid library user. Even the books I buy are used from the library. I love my library and spend hours there each week...so, I wanted to share some photos of one of my favorite places

And I thought our library was nice because it has a fireplace...well, it IS nice, but nowhere near as large and spacious as that library. Is that in Pasadena?

I love Tom Robbins!! One of my favorite books of all time is Still Life With Woodpecker. I've read it a dozen times over the years.

I loved Pocket! Another tale well told by Christopher Moore. I'm so sad I only have one book of his left to read. His writing is always full of hilarity and genius! Not my favorite Moore book, but a treat for sure

#5 The Day I Ate Whatever I Wanted - Elizabeth Berg



It's been many years since I've read a book by Elizabeth Berg. I listened to this on audio read by the author and I just loved it. Riding around in my car I felt like I was curled up on the couch with my cat on my lap, a cup of tea and a warm fire. It had such a cozy feel. I think the intimacy is always increased when the author is reading you the story and I enjoyed this collection of short stories very much. I laughed, I cried. I could really relate so I guess I'm ready to give Elizabeth Berg another shot, especially if she's reading to me!

I think I better not try what that book implies. I need to be losing weight, not gaining it! I've read a couple of Berg's books and enjoyed them.

LOL @ thorton. Aren't we all trying to lose weight? I enjoyed her 1st story in the collection..the title story. As a former and future member of Weight Watchers I could identify and enjoy the indulgent tale. I'm not in the age range that Elizabeth Berg normally writes about, but as a woman I was easily able to identify with all the characters throughout the book.

Alcottacre, I don't think she fits into your normal reading, but I do recommend this book on audio.

It's funny how it goes with authors......I almost feel like I've missed her. LOL!

My local library does not have the audio version, but does carry the book, so I will have to make due with that.

I love the title of that book! I don't really care for short stories, though. I don't know why, there is no logical reason why I shouldn't like them.

The only book by Elizabeth Berg that I've read is Open House. It was an Oprah book club selection many moons ago. Enjoyable, but didn't compel me to find any of her other books. Maybe I should give her another chance.

Did you like Weight Watchers? Sorry if this is too personal...I've been toying with joining WW for over a year now. There is one within walking distance of my house.

WW works. It really does. If nothing else...it gives you awareness. It'll open you eyes to the way you eat if nothing else.....It's a learning tool for sure

I was one of the people Elizabeth hated reading the books.....not incredibly overweight, but still in need of some sort of support system and the need to stop my weight gain before it got out of my control. I say this now...30 lbs overweight. LOL! hey hey hey.....It's ok. I have the tools.

Weight Watchers has helped me in the past and will help me in the future. Plus....when I'm not in the mind frame of "screw it" it does apply to your daily battle. I'm now using Spark People. It's just calories and whatnot....but, the points system as well as the meetings make weight loss almost seem like a fun game. I really recommend it. Give it a shot....you'll see. The pounds really drop off. Good luck!!

oh...I miss Oprah's book club. I'm so glad I was turned on to Toni Morrison and Maya Angelou and last year I think Wally Lamb's The Hour I First Believed was the best book I read all year. I didn't know Elizabeth Berg made her reading list, but how wonderful.

I miss Oprah's Book Club, too. I read many books that I would never have heard of, otherwise. But, I am so happy to have found LT and this group, especially.

I have joined the Spark People website, but I haven't really delved into it.

Spark People's free!! So, that's a major bonus. Plus, it makes things more manageable instead of the all elusive "points" mystery. Best of luck to you. I think tracking is the most important thing anyway..awareness and whatnot. Plus, you'll be surprised at the list of foods that are already in the system there. Hardly any need to input the nutritional info

#6 - 77 Shadow Street Dean Koontz



Worst. Book. Ever.

I don't know what I was thinking. I've been turned off to Koontz for many years now. But, coming off the high of American Horror Story on FX (I LOVED THAT SHOW) I thought it might be the appropriate fix. I was so wrong. I painstakingly made it to the end of this book and I wanted to throw it across the room and set it on fire. If you are a fan of Koontz...you may enjoy it? I dunno. But, if you are looking for a supernatural, spooky book....don't read this pile of chit.

Uh oh. Got it on reserve at the library...well, at least I didn't buy it! :)

I know...I paid a buck for that before it ever saw the shelves. Worst dollar ever. LOL!! I've never writen a book...much less 50....so I feel bad badmouthing Dean. There were a few of his I loved loved loved. But...that was then and this is now. And as I said....looking for some American Horror Story spookiness...it fell flat. Too many characters you could hardly keep track of, much less care about and instead of the ghost story I was longing for it ended up to be some ridiculous sci-fi fungus bullshit. Just sayin. This book was a major disappointment.

#7 - A Stolen Life - Jaycee Dugard

I read this book out of curiosity. Why didn't she escape? How did she feel about her tormentors? How was she dealing with being reintroduced to society? Those questions were answered and much much more. This book can be difficult at times, but it's fairly short. You'll be shocked at inspired at Jaycee's lack of self pity and ability for forgiveness. A sad and touching memoir.

#8 - The Night Circus - Erin Morgenstern

I listened to this on audio. I enjoyed the imagery throughout the book. I found it very enchanting and magical. Wouldn't you love to witness such a spectacle? I particularly loved when we were transported there ourselves by the narrator.

I think I lost something by listening to this book rather than reading it. The time jumps were difficult to keep track of and I think I may have lost the purpose of the "challenge" so, although I was left with some questions...I liked it

#9 - My Cat, Spit McGee Willie Morris



I remember reading My Dog Skip many years ago. I was pretty happy to finally read this one of Willie's about his love for cats...found later in life. I love all animals and I enjoy dog tales as much as the next guy/gal, but I got a kick out of reading about how this once proclaimed cat hater became the care giver and companion of many cats. And of course the story of his beloved Spit McGee. Great little book and I was sad to learn that Willie Morris has since passed away.

Hello so you sound like a daring person who would take any challenge of books! Am i correct?

#10 - Fancy White Trash Marjetta Geerling



If you enjoy laughing a great deal and reading about the fallen values of a family that is considered "white trash," this book is definitely for you! Abby Savage is the main character living in a house with five girls and one bathroom. She is astounded by the choices that her mother and sisters make repeatedly and hopes to escape the white trash life style that she has been raised in for years.

Abby makes up rules in order to assure herself from falling in her family's footsteps. Imagine three pregnancies at one time to the same male. Imagine your parent's marriage, divorce, then marriage again and divorce again! Imagine having sisters with reputations the size of wrap sheets.

Imagine having a wonderful gay next door neighbor best friend to escape and share your deepest thoughts with. This book is funny, touching and includes details from a truly fancy white trash family. Kudos to Marjetta Geerling for her first novel.

This was actually quite fun. My 14 yr old niece was telling me about it so I figured I'd read it and see what she was up to. LOL! No wonder she's not interested in my Judy Blume recommendations or even The Hunger Games. This was like an episode of Jerry Springer. It did have it's more poignant moments and the main character had her head on pretty straight considering.....I did end up enjoying it and now I'll have a lead in for some touchy subjects the next time I talk to my niece.

#11 - Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man Man Fannie Flagg

Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man is the first novel written by acclaimed novelist, actress, and comedian Fanny Flagg. This novel is the diary of a young, southern girl that chronicles her life from her eleventh birthday until the day she packs her bags to leave Mississippi.

I really enjoyed this book. I haven't read Fannie Flagg since Fried Green Tomatoes and I just loved Daisy Fay. Yay! I really wanted to read Fannie Flagg's 1st novel and it did not disappoint. Touching and funny...... 4 stars!

I have had Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man on my shelf for YEARS. I really should read it...I've read most of her other books, with Fried Green Tomatoes being my favorite.

I want to reread Fried Green Tomatoes and gobble up all her books. LOL! I always see I Still Dream About You at the library and I've gravitated towards it. I need to pick it up.

#12 - Summer and the City - Candace Bushnell



For Sex and the City fans who were totally bummed to learn the franchise is dunzo (it's official — there won't be a third movie), we have the next best thing. Summer and the City, Candace Bushnell's second prequel to the show we're all still obsessed with. We got Bushnell to give us some juicy bits about the Carrie we never knew — stuff even diehard SATC fans would never even guess...

This was an easy, read-in-one-sitting sort of book. Being a fan of SATC...I enjoyed it.

#13 Hunters of the Dusk - Darren Shan



Book 7 in Cirque Du Freak: the Saga of Darren Shan. I don't really know why I've read 7 of these. LOL! They read like chapters of what could maybe be a good book? I read them very quickly, so I guess I must like it. But, I feel like I've read the same book 7 times already. ugh.

13 yr old Maddie finds herself dead and in Hell after an overdose of marijuana. My favorite part about this book was all the reasons you can wind up in hell. Beeping your horn more than 500 times in your life? Saying the "F" word more than 700? Peeing in a public pool more than twice? Damned for all eternity. LOL! An ok read.

I loved Summer in the City. I liked it better than the first one in the series.

I'm ok with no third Sex and the City movie. I didn't really think that the second one was very good. Why in the world did they set in in Dubai? Great tv show, mediocre movies.

I didn't realize Summer and the City was part of a series. I had read 4 Blondes years ago and that was pretty much the extent of what I had read from Candace. I loved the series on HBO and I enjoyed the movies. What can I say.....I always want more more more. LOL! But, it was fun to see how those girls came together when they were young in Summer

Yes, it is the second book in the series. The first one is The Carrie Diaries and it takes place during Carrie's senior year of high school.

I guess I am being harsh about the movies. I still loved seeing the 4 characters and the fashions. I just HATED the plot line of Mr. Big leaving Carrie at the alter in the first one. It seemed so out of character for him, and then it had one of those stupid movie misunderstanding plots where things easily could've been cleared up. And the second one--again, I don't understand the choice of Dubai. I guess I like it best when they are in NYC. But, whatever, I can always watch the HBO show on dvd!

#15 - While I'm Falling - Laura Moriarty



A character driven novel about Veronica and her family in the aftermath of the parents divorce. I enjoyed the book and the characters. Most of the book is told in the 1st person of Veronica, but oddly enough there were 2 chapters told by the Mom. It definitely gave the reader insight as to what was going on, but it was strange that it was just 2 chapters.

Sandy...I was also quite bummed out about Big leaving Carrie in the 1st movie. :( I did enjoy seeing the girls all try to help Carrie after having her heart broken. I guess I can just really relate to the friendships and the characters. LOL! In the second movie I really wished Carrie never told Big about the kiss.

Now I find that I remember the young lady and her mother better than many other characters from a couple of years ago. So I guess it made more of an impression on me than I'd thought at the time.

#16 - Little Earthquakes - Jenifer Weiner



I've read Jenifer Weiner before. I'm pretty sure I've read Little Earthquakes before. LOL! It came out in 2004, so I guess it was a long time ago. It had such a familiar feel to it.

The familiar feel also has to do with the setting. I was born and raised in Philadelphia and all the landmarks and places she mentioned really gave me the feeling of being there. Even though I live in southern California now and have for some time.....I still get homesick often. It was nice to be reminded of every Xmas going to Wanamakers and every spring to the flower show :)

Anyway...this was a good book about friendship, marriages and mommyhood. It was very honest about all the obstacles and how difficult having that "perfect" life can be. I would definitely pass this book on to a new mother...not that they'd ever have time to read it. LOL! 3.5 stars

I'll never ever read it. But.....they did screw with our heads with that whole tumor thing. Personally, I was turned off to The Art of Racing in the Rain Enzo did not embrace his doggie self and a lot of the book was rather depressing.

Yes, well, I'm sure I'll be able to start it again because I too find Chet an absolute perfect dog who, you are so right, embraces his doggie self and "the nation within the nation." It always makes me chuckle when he is talking about being "on the case" and suddenly finds himself doing some naughty doggie thing, like chasing a cat or wild pig or chewing the leather on a sofa arm. Such a great character. Bernie, on the other hand, sometimes makes me want to scream. I actually get why his ex-wife is his ex.

ok...I just finished Deenie on audio. I couldn't resist when I saw it at the library. I read so much Judy Blume when I was a kid. This was such a treat as I could visualize the words on the page along with the reader. Gosh....I learned so much about being a girl from her books. Now, I wonder if the library has Tiger Eyes. LOL!!

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book, but once I got past the 1st chapter I was hooked. Reminiscent of childhood fairytale favorites....I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the witches as well as the darling green smoking jacket

a reread of a classic and a personal favorite. Never disappoints.

I recently embarked on a re-read of To Kill a Mockingbird and agree..... a classic that will never disappoint and will continue, IMO, to stand the test of time.

I plan on reading Valente's The Girl Who Circumnavigated sometime soon so always nice to see another positive review for the book!

TGW...is written really well. I needed some time to digest what I had read...so for such a short YA book it took me longer to read than most.

Ever bake Friendship Bread? I bet you will after reading this novel! LOL I enjoyed this book. Good ol fluffy chic lit. There were a few to many characters in the early chapters. But, soon everything came neatly together. I'd recommend this to anyone that's ever made Amish Friendship Bread or received a bag of the gooey starter. Have fun :)

#26 - Death by Pantyhose - Laura Levine



I was scrambling for a book to fit TIOLI challenge #3. (Read a book with a word of at least 5 letters in the title that is an anagram of another 5 letter word) so I perused the mystery aisles for a book with "death" in the title.

I came across this easy paperback and thought the cover art was cute. So, I peeked at the 1st page, saw Prozac was the name of her cat and was sold. LOL! What a great name for a cat!

The "mystery" part of this book was pretty weak, but I did enjoy the heroine and the story all in all. Not laugh out loud funny....but amusing.

This is the 6th installment of the Jaine Austen series. I haven't read any before and I doubt I'll read anymore. I'd compare the series to Stephanie Plum...so, ummmmmmm

I'll probably be back for more. LOL!

Actually, at the end of the audio book there was brief talk about how the brace is no longer used for treatment these days. I forget the name of the brace. Ugh! I hate that! It's on the tip of my tounge.

I read in this weeks Entertainment Weekly that "Tiger Eyes" is being made into a film. Directed by Judy's son Lawrence. I'm excited about that.

#27 - Getting Rid of Matthew - Jane Fallon



Well, luckily I listened to this on audio read by one of my favorite narrarators Rosalyn Landor. I may have abandon it if I was reading it....the characters were predictible and unlikeable. Yet, somehow I managed to enjoy the story. LOL!! (I know...I need to stop LOL'ing all the time)

Helen never thought she'd be one of those dreaded "other women," but that's just the predicament she finds herself in when she falls for her boss Matthew, a man many years her senior with a wife and children at home. She constantly wishes that they could spend more time with each other and asks Matthew to leave his wife for her. When he arrives on her doorstep with his bags in hand, she realizes you really have to be careful what you wish for. Suddenly her clandestine sometimes lover has turned into a real person - warts and all. She craves her privacy, and is embarrassed when she finds that the rest of the secretaries think that Matthew is not a catch at all, and schemes to hide her role in his separation. Then she decides the best way to get rid of him is the get him to go back to his wife Sophie, even going to far as to befriend her. The only problem - she likes Sophie more than she likes Matthew.

#28 - Night and Day - Robert B. Parker

so.....I finally meet the notorious Jesse Stone. ***yawn**
Could this book be more awful? I do enjoy the occasional mystery, but WTH? This book sucked

Jesse said, Holly said, Jessie said, Jen said, Jesse said...no one ever answered, asked, replied, commented or whatever other word might be applied. Said said said said said. I listened to this on audio and in 1 three minute chapter someone "said" something over 40 times!!!! ugh. I wanted to rip my hair out!

And if that wasn't bad enough.....the mild sexual deviancy of this mystery villian was dull and uninteresting. I don't know how this guy has sold so many books or why there was a television show based on the main character??? **scratching head**

Or I guess it's possible I read the absolute worse book in the series? I have no idea. I'll give this book 1/2 star just because it was fun to heckle along with in my car

oh...and for some reason, I have no idea why....but when I click on this book Night and Day by Robert B Parker to add to my library, it doesn't come up. Does anyone know why that would be? I suffered through it......I want to add it to books I've read. haha

#28 Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - Ransom Riggs



I enjoyed this book. It wasn't at all what I was expecting. I found the vintage photos really pulled it together and kept it interesting. Otherwise I may not have continued with the story.

I keep hearing that Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is interesting. It hasn't quite hit my wishlist yet, but you just nudged it a little closer. :-)

#30 I Still Dream About You - Fannie Flagg



I'm really not sure how I felt about this book. It almost makes a mockery of suicide. I still have no clear view why the protagonist wanted to kill herself. Because she was a vain ex beauty queen who wasn't comfortable aging? It made me angry. The side mystery was pretty strange, too. I think I'll have to think about it for a bit.

#31 - The Yoga Club - Cooper Lawrence



This was a one day read. 4 girls (including one guy!) meet at a Halloween party all wearing a Sarah Palin costume. They also witness a murder and realize they go to the same 8:30 yoga class. Lots of celeb name dropping kept my interest up a bit and made me curious if the author knew these people. But, it's just a weak mystery surrounding new friendships and relationships with a very Scoobydoo ending - 2 stars

Red Glass - Laura Resau



I'm truly impressed by some YA novels these days. This is a stunning book on so many levels. It's about a girl who finds her life and how to live in another country by challenging herself. It's a beautifully written novel about the real native Mexicans and the severe poverty they live in, told with grace and judgement free. I always enjoy coming of age type tales. Red Glass really impressed me. I recommend it :)

#34 - Still Life - Louise Penny



oh...I don't know. This novel was set in modern times, but it just felt to old fashioned for me. Maybe I'm just not a mystery person. I didn't really enjoy this book. I listened to it on audio so maybe that had something to do with it?

I'm in the middle of Still Life now, and not really loving it. Feels nice to have someone validate that feeling! I've read a later one in the series (The Brutal Telling), and really liked it. So I may still pick up more in the series, eventually.

#35 - The Memory of Running - Ron McLarty



This was the best audio book I have listened to in awhile. I think I always enjoy audio books when they are read by the author. This was no exception. I'm not sure if I would have 'gotten' Smithy on the written page.....

Smithy is an overweight self proclaimed loser who embarks on a cross country quest on his bicycle to claim his sisters body. The story is told in short chapters flipping between his current travels and tales of the past. It had a bit of a Forest Gump feel to it and I enjoyed it very much. I highly recommend this to listen to on audio.

I am a huge fan of the San Diego zoo. I also keep a close eye on the polar bears via the live cam.

I love smut and all....but, I'm not much into romances and Anne Rice is one of my favorite authors. Well, back when Lestat was the man anyway......and I've never even read any of her erotica.

I was not interested in Twilight at all. I thought Bella was a bore. But, the article was interesting as it compared Twilight to Fifty shades of grey if Edward were mortal and Bella wasn't so daft and I guess if porn comes in PG form. LOL! Anyway...I have to admit I'm curious as to what is causing all the hubbub.

I read a bit on the NPR site about Fifty Shades of Grey. It's interesting that it began as a hugely popular piece of Twilight fan fic - now rewritten without the Twilight references. I'm curious what all the fuss is about, but I'm not certain I'm curious enough to buy it. My library system doesn't have it; I imagine they're hesitant to by a book described as "Mommy Porn"....

BTW, I'm going to try to join you in a shared read of Red Glass - I don't know that I'll get to it, but I'll give it a shot.

Red Glass isn't an investment in time. It's Ya and you'll finish it quickly and you'll be glad to have read it. It's good.

If Twilight was "Mommy Porn" I might have to slit my wrist now. Bella was a big ol bore. Fuss schmuss...but, it's available on Amazon for less than $10 bucks and I'll peruse my library for the used books.

I didn't 'get' the whole Twilight thing in the article....so if Bella and Edward could have got kinky..this is what we'd have?

My biggest delve into smut was Confessions of a call girl and I even got the showtime series into my netflix queue...the book was better

Twilight wasn't "Mommy Porn" - Fifty Shades of Grey is supposed to be.

E.L. James was one of many who wrote a version of Twilight with sex - apparently lots of it - a put it online. From what I understand, her story (stories?) were an internet sensation. She then rewrote the story / novel (whatever) without illegally using the Twilight characters, and sold it as an ebook. Again hugely popular, she got picked up by a paper publishing house.

I'm wondering just how porn like is this trilogy? Does it really have more more or kinkier sex than a Laurell K. Hamilton novel? Erotic fluff with a plot line? I guess we'll have to wait until someone we know on LT reads it.

My mom actually mentioned Fifty Shades of Grey yesterday I hadn't heard about it before. The Anita Blake books set a high benchmark. I had a guy friend who had only read the first 3 or so recommend them to me. After I was like 10 or 12 books in I was like "Do you know what your recommending?". One of those series where I'm glad I have a Kindle and no one on the subway can see what I'm reading.

#39 - A Drowned Maiden's Hair - Laura Amy Schlitz



I picked this up at the recommendation of Storeetllr and I'm so glad I did. I gobbled it up in one sitting. It was a fine read and I have to wish I could have read this as a girl. I'll be saving A Drowned Maiden's Hair for my niece in a few years. I'm sure she'll be quite taken with it.

After being dumped by her fiance and fired from her job, Lucy finds herself in "ghost school" with some others who recently had a surprise demise.

Cute read.

#41 - Saving Fish From Drowning - Amy Tan



My least favorite read from Tan. But, I do love the title.

I saw The Hunger Games last night. In my opinion, anyone who enjoyed the book should enjoy the movie. It's a good companion to the novel. LOL! Anyone who hasn't read the books I think will miss a lot.

The biggest flaw for me was that the arena felt more like a game of hide and seek. It desperately lacked the tension that the book invoked. And the climax was completely inadequate displaying the terrifying and emotional drama that I felt reading the story.

All in all....in wasn't perfect. But, Jennifer Lawrence did a great job bringing Katniss to life. As did many of the other actors. Peeta wasn't perfect...yet I found myself more team Peeta watching the movie. Gale was a real mystery and if you hadn't read the book you'd really have no clue as to who he even was to Katniss.

So, as I said...it was flawed, but it still was a treat to see The Hunger Games come to life on the big screen.

I hope they are able to pull it more together with the other movies because the emotional impact was severely lacking

Oh, good news that The Hunger Games film is not fatally flawed because I've been looking forward to seeing it. Having read the book, I think I'll be able to fill in the blanks. I hope.

BTW, it's okay to read The Dog Who Knew Too Much. At least so far (3 discs in), it's really good!

You'll be able to fill in the blanks and enjoy The Hunger Games but, it's a shame for those that haven't read the book.

Seriously....she's kidding. There is hardly a sentence in this book that was serious at all. It was kind of a disappointment, but on audio read by Ellen it was pretty fun. Only 3 disks long and a few laugh out loud moments and lots of chuckles.

Well, I managed to dodge two out of the latest four book bullets. The two I am wishlisting? The Dovekeepers and The Fault in Our Stars.

Hoffman is hit and miss for me, but I love historical fiction, and you liked it, so...

The Dovekeepers took me weeks to finish. I read several books in between chapters of The Dovekeepers I didn't know much about the history of Masada and I found it fascinating and terribly sad. So, I guess it depends on your interest.

I've read books by Alice Hoffman before and think she runs hot and cold. I loved Practical Magic but disliked Here on Earth. I'd be willing to give her another chance, though.

I have not read any Alice Hoffman, but I did check The Dovekeepers out of the library based on your comments over on the TIOLI thread. I haven't started it yet, but hope to get to it soon. I really want to read The Fault in Our Stars - read the sample chapters on Kindle and got on the wait list at the library - still waiting months later because they only have 1 copy!! I guess what I found most compelling about The Dovekeepers was that it gave a voice to the woman during that time period. I enjoyed the descriptions and the tone of the story.

It wasn't a compelling read, so to speak. I had no problem taking a break from it and picking it back up days later. It had flaws....but, it really just took me there. Having never actually been there, I'd love to hear how it would effect someone who has.

I picked this up for Mystery March. I've seen these books around forever and I've never read one. So, I decided I'd start with A. I don't know where the alibi part fits in with the title, but whatever. The book was ok. I liked Kinsey as much as I could. The story flowed well, but it never really grabbed me. I won't be in any rush to continue with the series. I assume it gets better as she progresses down the alphabet.

Today I am picking up The Sparrow from the library and Fifty Shades of Grey from B&N

I was also excited to see Christopher Moore's new book Sacre Bleu: A Comedy d'Art is out as well. I'm looking forward to reading that one.

LOL!! I know, right? But, at least that got my confidence up so I could inquire at the library if they plan on carrying the books. It's a trilogy and my broke ass can't afford $60 on cheesy smut!

Hi Ellen, finally found my way to your thread. I finished The Dovekeepers and probably didn't like it as much as you did, I just wanted another type of book I suppose. That was my first by Hoffman though I've been told that she's written some good YA novels which I might check out at some stage.
I've also been reading a lot on various blogs about Fifty Shades of Grey, I don't think I'll be reading it. I'll be interested in what you think of it though. I'm impressed with the number of books you're getting through, The Fault in the stars is one I want to read soon.

Hi, Kerry. Thanks for dropping in. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy The Dovekeepers as much as I did. I think the fact that I was pretty clueless about Masada made it more interesting for me. Incantation is a good one from Hoffman that is YA.

My initial reaction to Fifty Shades of Grey was that it sucked. Innocent awkward girl meets experienced, powerful handsome stranger....so cliche and I couldn't get Bella and Edward out of my head. It was killing me! I was cursing myself! What was I thinking with this book?!?!? But, I have to admit...I am intrigued. So, I'll let you guys know what I think.

I also wanted to mention to anyone that stops by and believes in the power of prayer to please pray for my mother. She was just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and we are all terrified. We don't know much yet.....but, please. Positive thoughts and prayers would mean a lot to me. Thank you.

Sequel to Crank.......It was heartbreaking. So sad. I don't have much hope for Kristina, but I'll go on to read to other books. What a waste.....she seems so smart. I found this 2nd book to read more like a normal novel, I don't know if was because I had already read Crank and was used to the style or if Ellen Hopkins had changed her pace

#49 - The Bean Trees - Barbara Kingsolver



I don't know why I've steered away from Kingsolver. I loved Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life. This was my fist attempt at her fiction and I enjoyed it. It was a lot lighter and more humorous than I expected. I'll go on to read Pigs in Heaven, I'm curious to see how Turtle develops.

If you really want to be wowed by Kingsolver's writing, try one of her books of essays, perhaps Small Wonder or High Tide in Tucson. I think she really shone in those.

I have not read any Kingsolver either. I will have to remedy that.

I just reserved a CD copy of The Bean Trees from the library. Getting kind of excited about reading it. If I do like it a lot, there are a lot of others by her to read. I love when that happens. Crossing my fingers.

I listened to The Bean Trees on audio and it was very pleasant. I even looked up CJ Critt something to see if I had listened to another audio book she read. I hadn't...but, if you've ever listened to a Janet Evanovich book on audio, she probably read it to you. Now, I might even check one of those out. LOL! I liked her a lot and I'm a little picky with my narrators

4th in the Chet & Bernie mystery series. Always great to see Chet. He's a good dog and a good storyteller. Fun, easy read.

I picked up Sacre Bleu on hold at the library today. I'm excited to get into it...even more so since I found a chapter guide by Christopher Moore.

I also had The Peach Keeper on hold...but, since I was alerted that it was available and holding for me....it's been impossible to find. Driving me and the library both nuts. So, I checked out The Sugar Queen in the meantime.

AND.....I also rented Snowflower and the Secret Fan I had no idea it was made into a film. My mom just read it and she normally takes weeks and weeks on a book and she completed it in a number of days. She'll be thrilled to see the movie, providing that it's any good

I've also decided I am going to give The Sparrow a shot. I don't remember who is responsible here for getting it to my wishlist, but after reading the jacket again, it just seems to good to wait for. If I decide I'm not into it at this time, I'll just put it back on the wishlist. Since I have it now....I figure it's worth a try.

Ellen- The Sparrow is fantastic! I hope you enjoy it too! It quickly made me a die-hard Russell fan.

Lastly, The Sparrow was for me one of the top 10 books of all time. While reading it, I experienced a renewal of faith (which might seem odd to those who know the story), but something about it and the sequel (Children of God) spoke to my soul. Also, I had a bit of a crush on Father Emilio. BTW, it's the only book I can recall that I read it because I loved its cover art.

Dr. Oz is focusing on Fifty Shades of Grey today.

I wish my mom could find some strength....I can't imagine what she is going through. Yesterday a doctor told us if this fucked up Whipple surgery is her best bet...otherwise she's dead in 6 months.

And already I can hardly get her to eat.

I know pancreatic cancer is really awful terrible. But, so far, she's clear......smoker for 50 years and clear lungs...strong heart....strong woman. She could beat this. Hell.....she is one of the few people over 70 that take NO medications besides the monthly bone density stuff.

I'm just so sad. I know what has helped me.....but, I have no idea why I'm so spiritual when my family doesn't believe in anything. I'm just grateful that I am and I'll pray they get it.

Hey, I think a good course for both of you to follow would be to seek a support group specific to pancreatic cancer. You both might feel more empowered or supported if you spoke with others going through the same horrors. Truly. Ask your mom's doctor to recommend a support group for your family (or, as a last resort, look for one online).

For more information about how to live with your mom's diagnosis, use this National Institutes of Health (NIH) link about pancreatic cancer. Good information always helps. It has a live chat on weekdays. Don't hesitate to use it, either.

Pancreatic cancer is a tough one. I'm a breast cancer survivor. My heart goes out to anyone who, in life, has to ever face the cancer diagnosis.

And already I can hardly get her to eat.

Keep her as well hydrated as you can. If she won't eat, have her drink nourishing liquids - water, broth, juices, or Ensure (a liquid protein drink - available in most pharmacies).

Try her favorite foods, but in frequent small amounts.

I personally think it is much healthier to lay it all out there naked and exposed, and honest, than to hold it all in.

Sometimes you have to say things that you can't say to the people around you - well say them here. Write what you like on your own thread and know that there are people here sending good wishes / positive thoughts / prayers your way.

Faith can be a great source of strength and solace. You do what you need to do for yourself and let your other family members cope however they need to. While you're taking care of Betty, take care of yourself.

I mean, this totally sucks. It's the worst. Of all. She's your mom. And she's sick. And that matters. I really like what Madeline said: do something with her today ... this week ... this month .... And know that there are a bunch of supportive people here if you need us.

Today was not a good day. It appears the cancer has already spread to mom's lymph nodes...so surgery is off the table.

The oncologist prescribed a bunch of medication.....vicoden, antidepressants, appetite stimulants and digestive aides.

At this point he does not want to put her through any chemo or radiation treatment. It's all so sad. Right now all we can do is pray that some of these medications help and that she can eat and get the proper nutrition to possibly make her a candidate for some sort of treatment.

So sorry for being such a drag.

That way way bad news....but, I gotta tell you guys. The medicine is helping more than I ever could have thought. I can't believe she was only told to take a few tylenols. cheese and crust! The pain pills (vicoden) have made a world of difference. With a little relief from the pain...mom is MUCH better. She has energy, an appetite...color. I can't believe I was trying to boss her. :( So...now I get it.

I've read some books.....and I can't wait to update that. Nothing overly exciting......but, I'm just so glad you guys stop by and offering your words in support mean the world to me and if you have prayed for us.....thank you! Your prayers have been heard. xoxoxooxo

She's even getting some romantic TLC...her boyfriend who lives back east is out for a visit. I'm crashing at my brothers place to give them some privacy. ;) Mom's bfriends son has colon cancer and he's been his caregiver...so I know Mom is in good hands.

I brought along Thyme of Death by Susan Wittig Albert and I'm enjoying it very much. It's been on my TBR list for awhile.

I have such an affection for elephants. It's a little weird. I saw a documentary about the emotions of animals some years ago and...well, it hit me where I live. Elephants CRY for crying out loud

I don't know what my personal affliction is? But, as an example....I was following hurricane Katrina and I was so scared and I love New Orleans and PEOPLE....but, what broke my heart was what happened to the animals. OMG. I'm crying right now just thinking about it. (((animals)))

If I recall correctly, Hannah's Dream has some sad/poignant moments, but nothing horrific happens. Hannah has good people on her side. :)

Ellen, a good friend of mine was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Early stages, treatment going well so far. She had a lumpectomy and is now undergoing radiation. I'm sending her a postcard a day -- almost every day -- she has radiation five days a week until June 5, so I'm trying to match that with postcards. I don't think she knows what I'm up to yet, although she has gotten the first (and maybe now the second) in the series......
I hope you can find small ways to mark your mother's treatment and care -- and to keep taking care of yourself during this time.

I know your cards will mean the world to her. It's a bright spot in Mom's day when the mail comes! She's been getting so much support. Hell....when is the last time you looked forward to snail mail? It's just junk and bills. LOL! Your cards will mean the world to her.

There's something about getting a real hard-copy letter that makes my day. Especially if it's hand-written. :) Of course, this doesn't happen very often...People should never underestimate the power of a real get-well card or a letter.

Mom started radiation today and got her 2nd chemo treatment. So far...so good. We even went to the casino over the weekend! It was really nice. :)

I started Deadlocked and I'm so excited. I gobbled up all the books last year and watched all 3 seasons of Tru Blood on DVD. LOL!! I was happy to get done! LOL!! I kinda burnt out. But, I was real late on the bandwagon.

So, now that I've had some time to miss Sookie and her crazy crew..I'm giddy about reading this one and season 4 of True Blood come outs in a few days and season 5 starts soon on HBO. I might have to get HBO.

So...any discworld fans out there? I've wanted to give Terry Pratchett a try for years now and I finally have The Colour Of Magic and I'm put off by all the crazy words and I have to say....fantasy is just not my thing.

Should I try harder? Is it worth it? I'm also put off because there are so many books in the series

I loved The Colour of Magic, but I'd say that if you don't like fantasy, then your time is better spent elsewhere. I think what's so delightful about Pratchett's humor is that the absurdity of the fantastic universe he has created. If you don't like fantasy (or absurdity), then I can't imagine you'd like it...

I've only read Good omens and The Colour of Magic, but everyone has said that tCoM is not a good one to judge Pratchett by. That said, if fantasy is not your thing, Pratchett is probably not the best place to start. Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys or Neverwhere might appeal more.

I have read Neil Gaiman. I loved Stardust and that book with the kid who grew up in the cemetary. I forget what it's called....was that Neverwhere? I'll check out come more of his work. I put The Color of Magic back on the list. I do love absurity. But, I currently have the attention span of a gnat.

I'm not much into "cozy mysteries" but, I am into pretty simple stuff right now. I really liked Thyme of Death and I was very excited to read book 2 in the China Bayles series. I was a little dissapointed because the description got me kinda hyped up that this would be a book I would love on many levels. It wasn't......it was pretty predictible and lacking the magic I thought would be inspired. But, as far as this genre goes....I like China and the whole herb thing. So, I will continue with the series.

Oh...and as far as fantasy not being my "thing" as well as my deteriorating attention span...I just got into the 1st season of Game of Thrones and I'm loving it!!!

I doubt that I'll read the books.....but, after I'm through with the 1st season I will definitely be giving George R. R. Martin's trilogy a listen.

I didn't even know what to expect and I really enjoyed the 1st 2 episodes.

I just loved this book! So fun on audio read by the author. I'm not a crazy Bravo fan.....but, I do enjoy Andy and it was interesting to hear how he got in start in the "biz"

He's a funny guy and it was more like listening an old friend tell stories. It was quite a treat. I didn't know anything about him and now I feel like we're best buds. LOL!!
