Glad to see so many people joining in. I will be starting late. I just got a call from the library that one of the books I requested is in and I am picking it up after work. Now I have another book to read this weekend. I am posting my opening questions now since I will be getting home late from work.

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they? I have 2 ER books that I plan to read. They are In a Bleak Midwinter by Julia Spencer-Fleming Christmas in Sugarcreek by Shelley Shepard Gray and I am now adding The Woman in Black by Susan Hill to my list of reads this weekend.
2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon? My goal is to either finish one book or make a dent into all 3 books.
3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.) I will be starting out in my living room on the sofa, hopefully with the puppy on my lap. I may even try to read while I walk on my Wii fit for 30 minutes. Then I will move to my bedroom at night.
4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.) Depending on the book I usually like some sort of background noise. I usually like to listen to music. Sometimes I have the Television on just for the noise.

I will be back later to check on all the opening questions, if you decided to answer them.

Happy Reading all!!

Hi, I know there's still half an hour to the official start, but it's likely that I won't make it long - it's almost bed time for me in Italy. So I'll also post the start questions now:

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they?
I got some fresh books from the library and I have a couple of other books already started. One of the library books is Fight Club which is short, but in Italian, so I might need the weekend to finish it.

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon?
Read as much of Fight Club as possible and then do my daily reads (some "Arabian Nights", some "Joseph and His Brothers")

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.)
Wherever I am, but I'll start reading right here on my sofa

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.)
I noticed I can't cope well with background noises anymore. I am now watching a casting show on TV but later will switch off the TV.

15crazy4reading
Jan 20, 2012, 3:53 pm

Nathalia, I have always wanted to read Fight Club I will have to see what you think of the book. I will also see if I can get that at my library. Have a good night!

Ten minutes until I begin... :)

Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they?
1. Shanghai Girls by Lisa See - I'm about halfway through this book (starting from: page 122/214)
2. Stay Awake by Dan Chaon - This is an LT Early reviewer boo of short stories. I'm finished about half of these stories. (starting from: page 151/254)

Do you have a goal set for this readathon?
I have no goal whatever. I just hope to read peacefully when I have the time.

Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.)
I'm thinking I'll be on my living room sofa, but most likely I'll end up in bed!

Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise?
I can't hear background noise unless it's very loud, but I'll be seeking quiet.

I'll join in later this evening and be around here off and on through the week end.

I'll do the opening meme now but I probably won't report on my reading until the morning UK time as I'm not really planning on reading until I go to bed.

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they?
I'm reading 2 books at the moment Soul Mountain by Gao Xingjian and Marvels and Magic edited by Richard Barber. I've also got the next few reads lined up - Five Quarters of the Orange by Joanne Harris; Brother to Demons, Brother to Gods by Jack Williamson; Bel Canto by Ann Patchett are near the top of the pile. There are also a few more that are potential TIOLI reads.

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon?
Not really - get a few more of the tales in Marvels and Magic read; read a bit of Soul Mountain and, as neither of those are the sort of books you just read straight through maybe just read all if one of the other books I've mentioned.

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.)
I'll probably get a solid bit if reading in when I go to bed tonight and tomorrow morning. After that probably on the sofa in the living room until I go back to bad - no plans to go out:)

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.)

It varies - quiet in the bedroom but I often have the tv on for company during the day and if I am actually watching something I sometimes read a couple of pages in the ad breaks. I don't listen to music and read at the same time.

I hope everyone has a fun readathon:)

Count me in. Linda (from Chicagoland).

I'll probably start in about an hour and, except for snow shoveling and watching football on Sunday, will probably spend much of the weekend reading.

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they?

I'm reading Amazonia about working for Amazon.com in the early days, and also a book about the Lincoln assassination, Blood on the Moon. On the Amazon book, I'm about 40 percent through it but I'm only 10 percent through the Lincoln book.

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon?

I'd like to finish the Amazon book and, if possible, get most of the way through the Lincoln book.

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.)

In the living room, in my favorite chair.

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.)

During the day, I like background noise. At night, during my prime reading hours (9 pm til midnight), I prefer peace and quiet.

20RosyLibrarian

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they?

I would like to finish Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil so I can return it to the library and I also need to read from a textbook called Introduction to Public Librarianship for one of my classes.

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon?

No, but I'm not feeling well, so spending the day in bed reading sounds very nice.

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.)

In bed today. I'm not sure about this weekend. I hope it will be nice enough to go outside and do some reading.

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.)

I usually leave a window open and turn on a Pandora station for some soft background music.

Happy readings everyone!

I haven't participated in a read-a-thon before, but I have been sick this week and plan to spend the weekend on the sofa anyway, so I thought I'd join in.

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they?
Duchess of Bloomsbury Street and The Marriage Plot, although I might switch over to Out of the Deep I Cry.

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon?
I'd like to finish Duchess of Bloomsbury Street (easy) and make a good dent in The Marriage Plot, unless I feel too brain-dead for a quality novel.

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.)
Probably on the sofa.

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.)
I'll probably have the TV on in the background for some of the time.

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they?

I want to finish Game of Thrones so I can set it aside and say "DONE"... and my husbando can stop bothering me about reading it. :P (He wants to start watching the TV version). After that, who knows! Possibly Cinder by Marissa Meyer or something else that catches my eye...

Edit: My husbando just came home with a copy of Lev Grossman's The Magicians! Well, I guess that solves it...

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon?

Finish GoT!

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.)

The living room couch is my "reading place", though if I have a chance to read on Sunday, it'll be at my parents' place.

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.)

Either mild background noise from the kitchen radio or silence!

23maggie1944
Jan 20, 2012, 6:26 pm

I am away from home for the next couple of hours and I'll have some intermittant reading time, so I'll start, albeit on an on and off basis.

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they? I am reading Life by Keith Richards, who I've learned was often called Keffie. I have lots of other books to read but they are not at hand....

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon? I need to finish this book, and move on. It is about 400 more pages but it is not a heavy book. Can read fairly quickly, I think.

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.) Beginning at my niece's home, then at my home: on my sofa or in bed. If I pick up one of my many paperback books to read, I may read in the bathtub.

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.) I like it to be quiet but occasionally my dogs will bark or whine or pace the floor (asking to be let out). No music or radio as I'm easily distracted. (ADD, in my old age, I think)

Good reading everyone!!!

25AnneDC
Jan 20, 2012, 6:42 pm

I can't really start reading until later this evening, but I thought I'd answer the opening questions.

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they? I have a pile of books I'm hoping to read by the end of the month. I'd like to make a little progress in The Warmth of Other Suns and 1Q84, which I've started, but I don't think I want to read either one all weekend, so I will probably start a new book. Most likely candidates: Kokoro, Property Bridge on the Drina Agaat or Train Dreams. I also am listening to In The Woods on audio for those times I need to be doing something in the kitchen or driving.

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon? No.

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? Home (various locations) and wherever weekend errands take me.

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? I don't need total quiet and enjoy having music on, although I don't usually think to put any on. TV is fine if it's not something I'm personally interested in. I can't stand someone trying to talk to me, and there are 4 potential culprits in my house.

maggie1944 I loved Life!

Jan 20, 2012, 6:44 pm

It's been a busy day. I can't wait to settle in with a book tonight. I hope I can stay awake!

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they?
I'd like to get started on Oryx and Crake so I can join in the group read on the 12 in 12 Challenge. I also have Rules of Civility checked out from the library that is calling out to me.

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon? Relax and read until my eyes fall out. ;-)

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.) My usual spot... my quiet little snuggery surrounded by my books.

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.) Answered in No. 3. I like quiet surroundings when I read excepting for sounds of nature. I don't think that's going to happen this week end as the windows will be tightly shut to keep out the cold.

Hi! I'm Terri in NJ and I'll be part of it.
I'll commit to Saturday afternoon, since I have to work in the morning, and snow should keep me snuggled inside later.

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they?
11/22/63 and Why God Won't Go Away. I'll be listening to The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind on my commute. If the roads are bad, that could be a long time!

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon?
I want to finish 11/22/63 this weekend.

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.)
I'll be home in the den.

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.)
I like mostly quiet. Although I can read when music or TV is on, I'm noticeably slower.

My weekend plans fell through due to the upcoming inclement weather so I’m blissfully free this weekend. (LibraryLover23 in Pennsylvania)

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they?
Too many it seems. I’m all but done with Bel Canto by Ann Patchett but unfortunately I left it at work so I’ll have to finish that up next week. I’m also nearly done with Cannery Row for the Steinbeckathon, I’m partially through Insomnia by Stephen King, and I’ve been skimming Dave Ramsey’s The Total Money Makeover. I also just downloaded The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern as a library loan for my Kindle, and I have a stack of magazines to read. Phew!

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon?
If I can make a dent in any of them I’ll be happy.

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.)
Throughout the house, either on the sofa or in the bedroom probably.

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.)
Quiet, definitely. I’m a proofreader and I always have to contend with my coworkers’ chatter at work, reading in quiet at home is pure joy!

So far, so good. Between dinner, shoveling, and watching the snow forecasts, I got some reading in during the past 3 hours.

In my Amazon.com book, I went from 40% read to 66% read so good progress. The book talks about working during the early days of Amazon.com so I had to look up to find out when I first ordered from them--1997.

I'm in for this readathon!

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they?
I'm currently reading Broome Stages by Clemence Dane, Gunn's Golden Rules by Tim Gunn and American Idol: Celebrating 10 Years.

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon?
Nope

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc)
On the living room couch and in bed!

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.)
I usually listen to music while I read. I can have the tv on, but if it's a show that I'm interested in, I will end up reading only during the commercials.

Great to see some new people joining in as they can! Welcome Everyone! I didn't abandon you.

Linda - the Amazon book looks interesting. I look forward to seeing your thoughts on it.

Sandy - Do you watch Project Runway? I may have to look for Gunn's Golden Rules by Tim Gunn because I love him on Project Runway.

There are so many books listed in the readathons that I keep saying I need to look for them. 1Q84 is one I have seen before. The title just interests me. The Stephen King books also interest me. I haven't read many of his but the ones I have read I have enjoyed.

Here is my update:

I just expected to get my stuff together and to start reading but my puppy wouldn't let me. She wanted to play and eat what ever I brought out to my little table for later. Now she kicks me off the sofa and falls asleep. I hope to read for the next couple of hours as long as I don't fall asleep myself. Morning everyone! Of the 10 hours of the readathon I slept through 8, it's now almost 8am CET.

Monica, I think Fight Club is a very quick read. It's even quite easy in Italian although I have to look up many words. So far it's almost 1:1 like the movie (or better the movie seems to be a 1:1 adaptiation of the book).

It has been snowing outside - finally. The snow won't last the day but it's nice to wake up on a snowy Saturday morning when I don't need my car.

35PersephonesLibrary

Good morning everybody!

It's 10 a.m. in Austria. That means the first 12 hours of the readathon are already over. As I can see there is a really good reading going on here!

The cold half-rainy, half-snowy weather just makes it a perfect day for a readathon!
Prepared with a hot chai, with a fire in stove, and a blanket on the couch, I'm ready to let the reading madness beginn!

Opening questions:

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they?
Yes, I'm going to start with Der Herr der Ringe: Band 1 Die Gefährten. There's also a bilingual edition of Paul Auster's poetry Vom Verschwinden - Disappearances in reach.

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon?
I would be really happy to finish Der Herr der Ringe: Band 1 Die Gefährten, but there are still more than 400 pages to go!

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.)
I'll stay at home and beginn with my readings on the sofa behind the stove. Later I might chance to the kitchen or to the veranda. I will try NOT to read in bed, because I always fall asleep there.

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.)
I can't concentrate when the TV is on. As it comes to music, it really depends. When I read e.g. books in French and English, I prefer the quietness - or music without lyrics. (Also because I like to read some passages loudly, so that I can get a better feeling for the language.) With German books I'm less picky.

Have a nice day!

I was like dk_phoenix and fell asleep when I went upstairs to my bed. I think my cat helped me by curling up right next to my face. I am now up and took my puppy for a walk in the snow. Now I will get my breakfast and continue reading.

Nathalia I am glad to hear that Fight Club is an easy read even in Italian. And that the movie is a good adaptation of the book.

Hour 18 (Saturday 9 am EST)

I've been reading: Lassie Come-Home (aloud), In the Woods (audio), The Warmth of Other Suns, 1Q84, Kokoro
Books finished: 1 (Lassie)
Pages read: 22+23+7+14+22= 88

I had a pathetic night of reading. It took me a while to settle into one thing and by the time I crawled into bed with Kokoro, I fell asleep on the first page (I did read straight through 10 chapters but the shift from chair to bed killed me). All good books, each of which I'm enjoying. Helen and I did finish with Lassie which we've been reading since the end of December, so it will be fun to pick out the next book tomorrow night.

And it snowed here!

Madeline, maybe you should try Stay Awake tonight!

Late last night, I finished my first book, Amazonia: Five Years at the Epicenter of the Dot.Com Juggernaut by James Marcus (review on my thread).

I'll carry on today with either an ER book about baseball or possibly a mystery. Maybe both. After shoveling, my only non-reading plans for today include going out for lunch, if the roads are clear.

I'm Jenn in Denver, joining in at 830 am Mountain time. I am going to do the start-up meme, even though it's way past start-up :)

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they?
I am finishing A World Undone. I have 50 or so pages left and I've been reading this book on and off since last May. It's a great read, but there's a lot to take in. I want to finish it this month. I also have Missing May for my monthly Newbery read and A Gathering of Old Men for TIOLI.

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon?

If I can finish A World Undone, I'll be happy.

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.)
In the middle of all the action, in the LR with my kids

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.)
Quiet is definitely preferred, but not possible with 3 kids and a spouse on the weekend.

I've logged 3 hours in this readathon and am 150 pages into Oryx and Crake. I thought I'd need a break from a book out of my comfort zone. I was wrong! I can hardly put this book down and am a bit resentful of the interruptions from Real Life right now.

>53 dk_phoenix:: Faith, I also sleep better if I can read myself to sleep at night.
I'm laughing about the Stay Awake and Insomnia titles. I love the variety of books that we are reading. That's one of the best things about readathons for me. I feel as if I'm peeking over others' shoulders as they read. ;-)

I just found this thread and thought I'd jump in. I'm Carrie and I'm reading from Knoxville, TN. I'll have lots of time for reading this weekend since I'll be keeping my feet up most of the weekend. I'm pretty sure I broke a toe when I stubbed my toes yesterday morning while getting ready for work. I did go to work yesterday, but I'm not doing anything this weekend that isn't essential.

1. Do you have books already set aside for this readathon? If so, what are they? I have about 100 pages to go in Where Memories Lie by Deborah Crombie, and I should finish it this afternoon. I want to read a few chapters in Don Quixote for the 12 in 12 group read. I also want to read a good chunk of Before Sherlock Holmes, an Early Reviewer book. When I finish the Deborah Crombie book, I plan to start Twelve Drummers Drumming by C.C. Benison, which I discovered through Linda's thread a few weeks ago. At some point I'll probably listen to more of my current audiobook, Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo.

2. Do you have a goal set for this readathon? Yes, but not a reading goal. My goal is to stay off my feet as much as possible!

3. Where will you be reading during this read-a-thon? (bedroom, living room, bar, sofa, friends house etc.) Recliner, sofa, bed - anywhere I can put my feet up!

4. Do you like total quiet when you read or some background noise? (music, tv show, sports, etc.) Usually the TV for background noise. There are lots of animals in my neighborhood so it's never totally quiet. The occasional crowing roosters, barking dogs, etc., are easier to ignore when the TV is on.

#50: Carly, how do you like the Marriage Plot so far? I'm still thinking about buying it...

#54: Donna, that's also what I like about the readathons - this feeling of reading together.

My reading progress is going on fine. But after finishing the first book of the first volume of LOTR I suddendly got tired. That's why I took a short nap. But then I could continue refreshed and awake.

My personal hour 9 (7 p.m. CET)

I've been reading: Der Herr der Ringe - Band 1 Die Gefährten
Books finished: 0
Pages read: 94
Reading time: about 2 h 30 min

Total books read: 1 (not finished)
Total pages read: 219
Total time read: 5 h 30

Edit: There's one quote in the second chapter of the second book which I think could also be applied to our days: At the council of Elrond the characters are discussing what to do with the ring, and one suggestion is to throw it into the sea. Gandalf's answer:
"Not safe for ever,' said Gandalf. `There are many things in the deep waters; and seas and lands may change. And it is not our part here to take thought only for a season, or for a few lives of Men, or for a passing age of the world. We should seek a final end of this menace, even if we do not hope to make one. ' "

Jan 21, 2012, 2:27 pm

I requested The Marriage Plot from the library and had hoped to get it this week, unfortunately it wasn't returned in time. I am sure it would have been better readathon material than Mann's Joseph and his Brothers (which is fantastic but requires much more concentration than I can offer right now).

So I put that one aside again and instead finished Fight Club. Maybe I'll rewatch the DVD tomorrow to see which I like better - book or movie. The surprise element was better worked out in the movie and the simple, straight language was very well transferred into movie action. The book is even more graphically violent (but I have to verify that, it's been some years since I watched the DVD). The ending is different, can't say which one I prefer, they are both strong. The book gives a little more information about the protagonist's background and motives and has more society criticism.

So what's next? Maybe some more pages of the Thomas Mann book. I don't want to start something new, it's already 8:30pm here.

Midway meme:

1. Have you had any major interruptions during the readathon?
2. What do you like most about readathons?

Those are the only questions this time.

My answers:
1. My only interruption has been my daughter and he'd boyfriend coming over. I don't mind since my daughter will be in Spain for 5 months and leaves on Friday the 27th.

2. I like the interactions if all the different people and the books that are being read.

#57 + #60: That sounds tempting! Unfortunately, my library has just got the German version, not the original one...
#67: Jeremy, that's a great review!

Edit: Adding the midway meme, because I saw it too late:

1. Have you had any major interruptions during the readathon?
During my sixth hour an unplanned nap interrupted my reading.

2. What do you like most about readathons?
In general, I like the thought of many people of different nations reading "together" at the same time but at different spots on the planet. I just love to somehow "participate" in other people's readings.
Readathons are a great motivation to keep the reading going, even if you get a little bit tired.
And of course, it is such a good excuse to hang around on my couch with a book - and NOT to have a bad conscience because I should be more productive. Because... well, you know... a readathon is an event you're just committed to - which you just can't push aside for such banal things as family meetings or spontaneous visits of friends. :)

Midway meme:

1. Have you had any major interruptions during the readathon?

Lots! A husband. A dog that had a vaccination appointment. Homework and of course, updating LT.

2. What do you like most about readathons?

It's nice to feel like others are reading out there too. It's fun to see what everyone reads and how long it takes them and what they think about a certain book when they are only partly through it. We all see reviews for the entirety of a book, but sometimes it's interesting to see what people thought about a book when they haven't had time to perfectly craft what they want to say. Also, it is motivating to finish a book you've been meaning to. Phew, okay, what is there not to like about a read-a-thon? :)

73nittnut
Jan 21, 2012, 5:36 pm

1. Have you had any major interruptions during the readathon?

A big one. My husband and teenage son came back from a snow-camping trip with sunburned faces and wet clothes. Apparently they couldn't dispose of their paraphernalia without me. Laundry, mopping. Now we're expecting people for dinner, so I probably won't get back to reading until about 7 pm mountain.

2. What do you like most about readathons?

I like that I am reading along with a lot of other people, and I like getting through a book that needs to be finished - like this morning.

Usual pain made holding a book difficult so I've not been reading for very long at any one time:(

Those were all intentional interruptions, though, so I'm not complaining. :)

2. What do you like most about readathons?

I am joining in late but it has been a great weekend for reading her in Arlington, VA. Cold, snow-icy, no desire to head outside..

Goal: to finish The Love of My Youth. Accomplished this afternoon after about 40 mins of reading last night and an hour today. I read about 100 pages or so.

I got four ebooks from my hold stack at the library so I wanted to make a start with those this weeked. Started Mr. Fox about 5 this evening. Read the first two chapters before a break to make dinner. Meatloaf, acorn squash, and kale....

I've been reading but didn't know about the Readathon until late this afternoon, and I'm not sure exactly how many pages I read last night. I'm guessing at over 100 pages after 9 pm, and I think I've read about 200 pages since I got up today. That includes 152 counted pages today - the rest is Kindle books which don't have page numbers.

Finished since the start of the readathon, late last night and this morning

Lisa See, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
Emile Zola, The Ladies' Paradise
Leslie T Chang, Factory Girls

Current reading

ed Denise Hamilton, Los Angeles Noir 2: The Classics - short stories - the original anthologies in this series were specially commissioned material but 2nd anthologies from the same place are reprints, a mixture of much older stuff and modern writers, and some in between. This is one of the better anthologies in the series, and it's made me want to go back to Ross MacDonald and some of the other Californian PI/crime classics.

Kate Williams, The Pleasures of Men - review copy, set in Victorian London

Gin Phillips, The Well and the Mine

Josephine Hart, Sin - next choice of the Virago bookclub

Candia McWilliam, What to Look for in Winter - a memoir of a writer and reader who was judging and therefore reading for the Booker Prize when she realised she was losing her sight

A D Miller, Snowdrops - a Mumsnet (website) book club discussion book

Elizabeth Edmondson, Devil's Sonata

First day of early voting was quite busy. Never got a chance to read. I'll try to get some reading in before bed.

Ack, that break was longer than anticipated... still, managed to sit down for the past hour and get another hundred pages in. I don't imagine I'll get back on here before I fall asleep, so I'll make this my "end of day" tally and pick things back up tomorrow:

I've been reading: Naked Heat - Richard Castle

After dinner I had a couple more hours to work on 11/22/63. If nothing else, I'll never forget that date, after typing it so many times! :-)

1. Have you had any major interruptions during the readathon?
My major interruption today was that I had to go to work. That's not my normal pattern.
I'll be interrupted again tomorrow, in that I have to go to work again -- but that is normal --- I work at a church.

2. What do you like most about readathons?
This is my first one. I'm impressed at how much reading some of you people can manage! What I'm enjoying is the idea that there's a group of people all reading in an organized (sorta) way and we can know it without being in the same place.

I'm off to bed, so there will be more reading until I fall asleep, since I, as it seems is the case with others of you, always go to sleep with my reading.

Good night, and I'll check in tomorrow, hopefully with this book finished!

I finished Where Memories Lie this afternoon, and I've read the first chapter of Before Sherlock Holmes. I'm getting ready to start Twelve Drummers Drumming. I ended up watching several shows on Netflix earlier this evening instead of reading.

1. Have you had any major interruptions during the readathon? More distractions than interruptions (Netflix).

2. What do you like most about readathons? The variety of reading. I almost always add more books to my wishlist as a result of a readathon, or bump something higher that's already on my list.

Heh! Just want to share some amusing lines from Dan Chaon's book, Stay Awake. These three quotes were in the short story called "Shepherdess"...

"Your kisses are unpleasantly moist," she says.

It has a kind of perfumey, mentholated flavor, like a cough drop dissolved in Earl Grey tea.

Her dark hair stands up stiff, like a shrub.

(Hmmmm? I've had such bad hair days as well!)

>90 SqueakyChu:: Lol, Madeline. I hope Stay Awake continues to work for you tonight. Love the quote.

I just finished Oryx and Crake which I didn't want to put down. I read for approximately 5 hours today and 1.5 hours last night and completed 383 pages.

1. Have you had any major interruptions during the readathon? I watched Downton Abbey this afternoon then went out for a quick meal with my husband.

2. What do you like most about readathons? The chance for some guilt-free reading. I'd be reading anyway, but I can tell the rest of the world to leave me alone because, after all, I am in a readathon. It has mixed results. DH wanted to go out because he knew I wasn't cooking and I was happy to take a phone call from my daughter. Family comes first!

See you in the morning.

I've managed to listen to one more chapter of In The Woods while doing the dishes but no more reading since I last checked in.

1. Have you had any major interruptions during the readathon? More like constant interruptions--dinner, children--but the longest interruption was my own, because I actually stopped reading to review my last five books. This is one on my goals for 2012 and so far so good.

2. What do you like most about readathons? An opportunity for some focused reading, and a chance to see what other people are reading.

Good Morning everyone! Stopped counting the hours, it's 9:20am where I live.

I read too long last night without making much progress - maybe 100 pages of Joseph and His Brothers by Thomas Mann and some pages of Arabian Nights. My eyes are still tired and hurting a little, so I'll reduce my reading today.

Just had some coffee and fresh fruit salad. The weather is very promising - it looks cold, but the sun is shining, I will sure go for a walk later.

Hi, I'm Manuel from frozen Wisconsin. I thought about joining the readthon yesterday but wasn't sure if I was going to do much reading. As it turns out I finished a book! Needless to say other activities and duties were relegated.

The Book: The Report by Jessica Francis Kane

When read: Saturday morning, from 5 to 7 read about 100 pages or so. Later that morning another 20 pages. Went to see the Met opera production (in a local movie theater in HD- another story) that lasted about 4 hours. Supper and then read another hour or so- till page 156.
Sunday morning, from 5 to about 7AM with some interruptions finished the book through page 238.

I doubt I'll be doing more reading today-- need to work on a couple of presentations for work. One that I have to give personally to our sales people a week from tomorrow, the others I'm putting together for two of the company's presidents.

Good reading to everyone.

Kathy, I'm totally impressed that you finished book one of the Lord of the Rings in only 9 hours. I remember reading it in my second year in college, when I dominated English a little better, and it took me many more hours. I also remember that Tolkien's vocabulary was magnificent- I had to consult the dictionary many times each page it seemed.

Good job!

Good morning, everyone! Some great books mentioned here, and I love reading your initial thoughts on them.

Reporting in: The last time I posted pages finished I was on page 212 in Keith Richard's Life. Now, I'm on page 276, having done more reading yesterday evening, and in bed before sleeping. I'm loving the book, its almost like being on the Riviera with The Rollin' Stones right now..

well, that might be an exaggeration.

I'll report in later when I've make some more progress. Off to fix one more cafe au lait and then settle in for some early morning reading.

Didn't know that it was a read-a-thon weekend, but it sort of suits me.

Reading as a 'favour' to a colleague (who lent me the book wanting me to say what I thought of the book): Dancing Jax by Robin Jarvis.

I agree with some reviewers - it's weird and different. Not sure about the genre yet, but so far leaning towards something like Fantastic Fiction. Front page reminds me of the movie Big w/Tom Hanks (the fortune telling machine).

Read 1/5 of the book so far - and not yet willing to throw it out, though not actually loving it. Hope it gets better when I understand the book better.

One thing I can say about the book, though, is that it has a lot of references to British popular culture of today. Some I pick up on and other that just leave me as one big question mark.

My personal hour 32 (6 p.m. CET)

#99 + #105: Nathalie and Manuel, thank you both! But I must admit that I’m reading a German translation of LOTR, so that helped a little bit to finish it in that time! :)

#102: Nathalie, I’m sorry that the weather makes you a bad conscience. So, I guess there are some advantages when it’s cold outside and raining all day long.

#104: Manuel, great that you found time to join us! I envy you so for watching the Met opera-production. This is sometimes offered in our movie theatres, too – but I always learn of it when it’s already over!

#108: Calm, The Five Quarters of the Orange goes on my reading list. I hope that you like it.
#109: Jenn, A Gathering of Old Men sounds also very interesting. On my list it goes!

My reading afternoon was quite often interrupted. There was always someone watching TV or listening to very loud music, telephone was ringing etc., so I didn’t stay in the living room for long. But when I escaped to my bedroom what happened? Of course, I fell asleep.
I only read a few pages of the second volume of LOTR, and then switched to something totally different – just because I saw it by accident on my shelves: Herr Groll erfährt die Welt. The book deals with an Austrian guy in a wheelchair. In short scenes he explains his view of the world, but in a very dark, sarcastic and sometimes absurd way. There are many political and social issues discussed in the book

I've been reading: Der Herr der Ringe - Band 2: Die zwei Türme, Herr Groll erfährt die Welt
Books finished: 1
Pages read: 36 + 21 = 57
Reading time: can’t say anymore - about 1h?

Well, I stayed up late last night and finished The Marriage Plot. I can't remember where my last page cut-off was, but I had only read about 10 pages of it before the readathon started, so that means I have read about 393 pages so far in the readathon. It reminds me a lot of Anna Karenina, both in plot and theme, but without seeming too derivative. Thumbs up for sure.

#111: now I am even more looking forward to getting this book from my library, hopefully next week

I finished One, No One & One Hundred Thousand - only thanks to the readathon! Sometimes you know you are reading a great book, but just can't find access to it. This has been the case here. I respect the author (Luigi Pirandello) for what he has done, and the book definitely deserves its place on the 1001 list, but it has been one of the most difficult and joyless reads in my life. The one good thing: it has only 140 pages (for which I needed all Sunday).
It has been one of my "New Year's Resolutions Reads", so I am really happy it's off my list.

#110 - regarding the Met opera in movie theaters.

Kathy, if you haven't seen any from the Met you must make the effort. One of the great things of these productions shown in the movie theater is that you get to see behind the scenes. They will usually interview the conductor and the principal singers- right between the acts! Also, often they will show how the sets are constructed- especially in cases such as Wagner's Ring production that the set was extremely unusual and complex.

To me, the added value is that the theater is only a 5-minute drive from my house. So I can leave 6 minutes before and make it on time. Some of the friends I meet at the theater like it because they can eat popcorn while they watch.

The next one is Feb 11th at noon- in the US. It's Gotterdammerung- should be a great production.

End of Meme Questions:

What did you like the most/least about this read a thon?
I liked it nice leisurely pace.

Will you participate in another read a thon?
Definitely!

Did you add any new books to your wishlist or TBR mountains/piles?
Nope.

Any suggestions on what to do differently to possibly improve the read a thon?
I agree that an additional meme or two would have been fun.

Thanks for hosting, Monica!

I want to thank everyone for participating and answering the questions. (Which I hate trying to think up.) I didn't get to read after my last post until well after the read a thon was over. I enjoyed hosting this read a thon and loved reading all the interesting posts about the books being read.

Here are my answers to the final meme:
