As it stands, a member of LT cannot rate or review a book if that book is not part of their collection, even if the book is contained in an omnibus that IS part of their collection. For instance, I own The Irvine Welsh Omnibus, which contains Trainspotting, The Acid House and Marabou Stork Nightmares. If I want to rate or review the latter three books, I'd have to add them as individual copies to my library, even though I own them and have read them.

Would like to be able to rate and review books individually even if I only own them in an omnibus edition.

It's not quite perfect, but you could include the individual books in your "Read but unowned" collection and rate those copies.

Yeah, not quite perfect. I guess it's a solution and as such probably not high on the LT to-do list. Hadn't thought of it but may consider it... still a pain to add more books than I need to but maybe I'm just being picky :)

When I read the omnibus, I rate and review the omnibus. When I read the individual works separately, I do as described in #2. From the LT-browser's perspective, work-to-work relationships are worth exploring if you want to read reviews relevant to a particular book. Being able to read reviews of a work's components, or of books that have collected it with other materials, can be helpful.

I've been adding my omnibus books to a collection called Inclusions, for the express purpose of rating and reviewing them individually. I also review the omnibus, but as a quick skim (Not bad, not as good as I remembered, fantastic...) with the note "detailed reviews on the individual books".

The Contained/Contains feature is still in progress - at some point, it may include smaller works like short stories and the like. And possibly have some way of rating and reviewing contained works. But more likely not - that would be a major complication at best and may be impossible in code. So I'm continuing to add my Inclusions. All Collections is getting less and less representative of my actual books - but I use Your Library for that, so that's OK with me.

I don't know, I haven't seen much "progress" since it was introduced. ;)

Yeah well. It's sort of like "two weeks" - "in progress" means "Tim said there might be more to it than there is now, though he seems to have moved on..."

>5 jjmcgaffey:: Thanks for that. Being just about computer literate and not much more than that, I'm never sure what's possible when it comes to the coding when I make a suggestion. Probably worth my while playing around with the collections feature then, which I haven't really done yet, as 'My Library' is pretty much as it was pre-collections (ie books I've read, as I've read them).

I created a collection called Corralled where I enter books separately that I have contained in omnibuses. I review them there or occasionally just call out a review in the omnibus record itself.
