I own the first work of this series
http://www.librarything.com/series/Martin+Mystère
titled Gli uomini in nero
today I added to my library the third work of this series
http://www.librarything.com/series/Martin+Mystère+gigante
titled Gli uomini in nero as well
This work is considered automagically a different edition of the first work.
Problem is that in the combine page of the author
http://www.librarything.com/combine.php?author=castellialfredo
I don't see 2 works but only one
Gli uomini in nero by Alfredo Castelli (2 copies; go to work)
Gli uomini in nero by Alfredo Castelli (separate)
so I'm unable to separate them.

Yes, if different works share title and author and don't have an ISBN there's no way for the database of keeping them apart. I've ran into that problem too - in my case "Barnett Newman" (1969 booklet) by Thomas B. Hess got autocombined into "Barnett Newman" (1971 book) by the same author. I only resolved it by adding a little extra info in square brackets to one of them. After that I could separate them. Tried if they remained separated when I took the extra bit out afterwards - no luck.
Edited to correct typo.

If you look closely at the images at
www.librarything.com/series/Martin+Mystère
you'll see that Martin Mystère N. 1 (1982) has NO title
The title "Gli Uomini in nero" (Men in Black) is only inside. So the book should be catalogued it as "Il Detective dell'Impossibile" (The general subtitle of the series) or "No title". In USA it was titled "Destroyers of the Past".
(The book was reprinted WITH the title in the series "Tutto Martin Mystere". It can be catalogued with a double title: Gli Uomini in nero (Detective dell'Impossibile)
"Gli Uomini in Nero" of the "Gigante" Series (1997) is in fact a totally different story for a different series (bigger format)
You can see all the MM books published by Sergio Bonelli Editore (more were created for different publishers) at

>3 AlfredoCastelli:
If Alfredo Castelli himself is suggesting to rename the first Martin Mystère as Il Detective dell'Impossibile I bow and scrape and follow his advise.
I duplicated series here
http://www.librarything.com/series/Martin+Mystère
and I'm working on the Gigante series now

Although there is nothing except the user name to suggest that really was the author!
Yeah, I'm a suspicious old so and so.

Why, I am an optimist guy...

Jim has a point. Personally I prefer to think : "who would bother to deceive me over such a trivial matter?" - no money will change hands either way. But he does have a point - anybody can create an account in whatever name.

At a minimum, it's someone who knows (and presumably likes) the author's work enough to use that as a user name, and (therefore, probably) has more information about it than someone who's merely read the books (or, like me, never heard of them). Of course, it was just created...but maybe the author just noticed LT because of this discussion.

Same issue at http://www.librarything.com/topic/100453 - closing, but keeping the example(s) for when we tackle versions/editions
