Oh wow, these are gorgeous photos! Beacon is a natural model! Boots, Gracie, Hamlet... all beauties! :-)

>anna_in_pdx, those are three different tuxedo cats (RaeAnn, Agamemnon, and Kira, respectively).

>fuzzi, none of them are Casey, from the other thread. Until we recently lost Casey, we had four tuxedos -- our first four cats. Pixel is the one that is likely part Turkish Van (white body, orange markings on head and tail), and Jean-Luc is the one with the big green/yellow baby eyes. I don't think he's calico, as they're all female, right? Jean-Luc actually looks closest to a ragamuffin, when I compare him to breed pictures.

Not pictured in this thread is Casey, the fourth tuxedo -- he actually had a bad eye (slightly recessed and with scar tissue on it), making it hard to get a good photo although honestly we didn't even "see" the bad eye anymore! Also not pictured in any thread is Precious, who looks like a British shorthair, a Zsa Zsa Gabor-like diva who is hard to photograph.

We're just breaking in Sheldor, our new kitten. He's not yet integrated with the others due to lingering kitten cold. Some cute kitten photos but no artistic shots yet!

Have any of you ever thought about submitting some of your photos for these cat calendar contests? A number of nonprofits have these competitions. Of course it costs to enter, but it is fun to see your cat as April or May. My neighbor's cat was Miss April (I think) in one of them. A lot of these photos look like winners to me.

It is isn't it! Quite common for older New Zealand houses. Thankfully, the one we have now isn't so old and icky. Harvey's gorgeous (well, they all are): She was a stray and my husband called her Harvey after Harvey Dent from Batman. Twoface! Even though she's a girl, it stuck once we'd caught her inside and found out her gender.

My anoles are also named George and Martha! ;-)

Their predecessors were Cheech, Chong, Kim (we couldn't tell he was a boy until he grew older), Reptar, Godzilla and Fafnir. Reptar and Cheech had babies—teeny, tiny little things—named Huff and Puff. Sadly, they didn't live long because we could never find food small enough for them to eat.

Here is a photo of Georgy, the youngest of my three cats

At the time I took this photo he was a stray who was hiding under my house and stealing food from my cats whenever he had the opportunity. It took a while for him to trust us enough for us to get near him. We found out that he had been abandoned weeks before by his owners when they moved.

We took him in. He was very underweight (2.5 kg) and his long hair was terribly matted. He was about 2 years old.

He is now 6 years old and weighs 6kg. He is food obsessed,

Second is a photo of my 8 year old Spider. A friend photoshop this for me. Both Spider and the spider are real. Spider is a big wuss.

and thirdly my oldest cat, Miss Chicken who was born with only three legs. She will be 14 this year, this photo was taken a few years ago

All our cats are, shall we say, anxious for their dinner, but only one of our cats is actually food-aggressive, and we're pretty sure he was dumped in our apartment parking lot, and/or left for days at a time without adequate food, water, and company.

If we make animals dependent on us, then we have a profound responsibility to them.

46dkhiggin
Jul 17, 2012, 10:50 am

I grew up on a farm in South Dakota and we lived right alongside a busy highway, well as busy as a highway gets in South Dakota, and people regularly drove the five miles out of town and dumped their dogs out and then left. We always had a stray or two on the farm. I never could understand that mentality. Just plain sick. If someone can be cruel to animals, they will also be cruel to humans, IMHO.

#38
Anoles are not usually found in "groups" in the wild and our terrarium is really only big enough for two, so we try to get a male and female pair (they only live about 3 years), and I just come up with two names that seem to go together! The problem is that juveniles of both sexes have a white chevron pattern on their backs. Males lose theirs but females usually keep it. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure both George and Martha are males! I just never renamed poor Martha! George picks on Martha, but so far, not bad enough to kill him which is what Cheech did to Kim and Fafnir, poor things. My husband makes sure Martha gets his fair share of crickets and moths.

48amysisson
Jul 17, 2012, 11:04 am

Here in Houston we get anoles wandering into the house on occasion. Considering the herd of cats we have, it is QUITE a challenge catching a quick-moving anole and relocating it outside before the cats get their paws on it. But I did manage to catch and release a baby anole just the other day.

49dkhiggin
Jul 17, 2012, 11:10 am

We had them in Florida, too. I never thought I would like lizards, but I get quite attached to the little things! I cried buckets when little Chong died. Cheech was a stowaway on some car parts my brother-in-law bought from a guy who lived in Pensacola. That's how it all started!

50fuzzi
Jul 17, 2012, 12:27 pm

We have anoles and skinks here in eastern NC. Most of the time they stay outside, but occasionally they come in. I've managed to save a couple for release outside, but have also found several poor little bodies that the cats had been playing with. :(

52gilroy
Jul 17, 2012, 1:47 pm

Your story, Fuzzi, reminded me of something one of my cats was doing the other day.

My furry babies are mostly indoor, with outdoor privledges. When I put my Blaze out (she of orange black and white torty fame), she went straight to the flower box against the basement wall. She sniffed, then ran to the far end. After a minute wait, she reached out and wacked something, then ran to the opposite end of the flower box. Again the sit, wack, and run.

Naturally, I got curious as she continued this.

The silly thing was playing whackamole with a mouse from either end of the flower box!
Talk about playing with your food, eh?

53fuzzi
Jul 17, 2012, 6:37 pm

(52) gilroy, that's funny (not from the mouse's perspective, of course!).

My dh has shared a story with me from his childhood, about his cat, "Babe" and another cat that lived in the neighborhood. One day when my dh was about 15, he noticed his cat was running back and forth on his side of the street, and another cat was running back and forth on the opposite side of the street. Curious to see what was happening, he walked outside. He discovered that there was a mouse in the street: when it ran to one side of the street, the cat on that side would meet it and smack it with his paw...so the mouse would then run back across the street where the other cat would also meet it and smack it. The cats were having a game of ping pong with the mouse!

Happy ending: my dh rescued the mouse from the two feline fiends... ;)

54krazy4katz
Jul 17, 2012, 6:41 pm

Oh, fuzzi. Your dh is like my dh. :-)

I think our cats would actually be afraid of mice, even though they were all originally from outside. They are strange ones. They will follow insects around the house, but I rarely see them try to catch them. Maybe they know the insects are smarter.

Well, thanks anna_in_pdx. It is funny how much of it wasn't controlled, though. I waited for good light in most cases. And I waited for the cats to be in interesting poses. The quick shutter of an SLR helps a lot, too. The first two photos were taken of my parents' current cats, with a digital SLR. The next three photos are of now deceased cats that I grew up with. I took those pictures with an old, fully manual film Canon SLR.

Hi #98,

I agree with you re. beauty.

But I would like to share a story on perception.

My 'best friend' is/was a Rural type. I lived on his 10 acre "farmlet" for about a year. Well he had 3 dogs and a Cat.
And geese and chooks and peacocks and...

That poor old moggie was about 15 yo. and hadn't been petted for many, many a year. He had "squamous epithial cancer of the lips" and dribbled badly and NO ONE wanted to touch the poor beaste. His fur was wet and...and...

Well I petted it, put it on my lap (dribble and all) and got the loudest PURRS and love I had ever got. The puss was starved for love.

That was the same cat, I had mentioned in another tale, "...walking past the 3 dogs and when he went out of sight doing the equivalent of 'phew, survived that one' "

Guido.

One of the my cats from the past was found literally in the middle of the road!. Our warrant guys were out on I-985 and an old lady ahead of them slammed her brakes on and stopped in the middle of the interstate! The guys got out, found the kitten under her car, and had to crawl under it to get him (she refused to move until they had rescued the kitty, and yes traffic came to a stop on all the northbound lanes). These two big, tough guys brought the kitty back with them, and I ended up taking him home, named him George, found out from the vet he was about 4 - 5 weeks old, and fed him on scrambled eggs and baby cereal until he could eat soft cat food.

107guido47
Edited: Aug 28, 2012, 10:58 am

"Chooks" are a cross between an EMU and a chicken.

Sorry about that, you know that Aussies "have to" exaggerate.

A chook is just a chicken/hen. Not usually used for a rooster.
See, we males have to be special :-)

Although thinking about it, since there was usually only one rooster and the rest were hens...

I wonder what happened to the other male "chooks"?

ETA. coq au vin?

108J_ipsen
Aug 28, 2012, 11:11 am

Normally they only keep one rooster to prevent fighting...the others loose their balls early and are called "capon". They are quite delicious: the meat is not as fatty as a chicken but moist and meaty.

Here is my previous cat, Marbles. She was the best cat ever!! (obviously biased!)
She lived a long and happy life, and we lost her in 2011.
She was rescued as a kitten off the street. She was pretty small (about 10lbs), but looked like a Maine Coon. She was very personable.

I caught her here having a bath. I could pretend I'm good at cat photography, but I just got lucky with this shot.

This is Coco, she's a gen1 snowshoe (mum's a full showshoe & dad's a siamese - unfortunately she doesnt have the snowshoe markings, but she carries them so can still be part of the breeding program) - she's not mine, but I was visiting the breeder to take pics for her & I just love this one so had to share :)

My Rory is a snowshoe. I thought it was just a Siamese with some mongrel genes. There are tons of them around here. The Humane Society gets a few every month. Had no idea there was an actual breeding program for them.

Lovely cats, and I also enjoyed the tails. ;)

We have four strays right now. The most recent arrival is an underweight black cat...when he first showed up for feedings, he was so skinny that at first his head seemed way too big for his body.

As he would not let me near him, I had to trap him in order to have him neutered, plus he was sneezing frequently and I wanted him checked out. He was taken to the spay clinic the next morning.

After I got home from work, I found out that he was FIV positive, but due to an error, he was sent home: the clinic usually euthanizes any cat found to be carrying FIV.

So after talking with knowledgeable people, we did not take Blackie back, but allowed him to continue living here. FIV is passed on through mating or fighting, and as he was now neutered, the odds were against him infecting others.

Now comes the bittersweet part of the story...

...one day I cautiously stroked Blackie, and he responded by becoming extremely affectionate and purring. He now tries to follow me into the house, and never fails to rub my legs when I go outside. Conclusion? Blackie KNEW about being a house cat, and the joys of being scratched and petted by a human...so he belonged to someone at some point, but was so scared of us at the beginning that he would not let us near.

What happened? Did his owner die? Did he get lost?

And what he must have gone through in order to be so afraid of the people who were feeding him...

Blackie doesn't have a lot of time left, he frequently coughs and sneezes: he usually has dried mucus on his face (which I try to clean from time to time), but he appears to be happy that he has someone to feed him and pet him. I'm glad for the opportunity to give him the love he went without for a long time.

126amysisson
Sep 19, 2012, 10:13 pm

Thank you for taking care of Blackie!

Are you sure he doesn't have much time left? We have a cat we just discovered is FIV positive (our cats are all indoors so he's probably had it for years from his outdoor days, and we got a false negative at the time). While a respiratory infection can knock him down quickly, FIV isn't like human HIV -- just means they need attention more quickly when they get a cold.

Another cat of ours had chronic respiratory infection -- you wouldn't believe the sneezing that covered our walls and windows! -- and he lived to be 14 before he died of cancer.

Anyway, it's clear Blackie is happy to have you. I wish you and him the best!!!!!

127fuzzi
Sep 20, 2012, 8:15 pm

Thank you, @amysisson.

On a positive note, Blackie eats more than any other cat I feed, and has filled out some. I've been feeding him some canned food on the sly, when the other cats aren't around...he loves it!

128Betty30554
Sep 21, 2012, 2:29 am

fuzzi, I had a wonderful cat named Socks that was diagnosed in '03 with FIV, and he continued to stay so very healthy! When I moved to another state in '08, he got in a snit and disappeared. Finally, gave up searching after one of the neighbors reported seeing him living at a house in an other neighborhood.

Hang in there with Blackie. I'm willing to guess he will be in the pink of health for years to come. I wouldn't hesitate to adopt another FIV+ cat. Best of luck to you both.

I saw that she was sleeping on the corner of the table, and came over to be near her. Minutes later she woke up, and I stuck my camera lens in her face. Luckily, she yawned about 3 times, and I managed to have autofocus on. So, mostly luck and seizing opportunities.

I think my fave is the first one, I just LOVE the mid point on their noses where the hair all kinda meets from different directions & I think that one highlights it oh so nicely :)

I think these pics show their purrsonalities a bit too, Taji's not the cleverest but oh so full of love & Tilly's much more in control & is a very determined girl, she has a much less innocent look on her face than Taji, lol :)

Awwww such gorgeous kitties here!

This was an ex's cat ("Kitty"), she was beautiful! And she wasn't really as annoyed as she looks, hahaha! More like, errr what're ya doin?? :P

All of her, but with a crummy camera!

This darling was also his, that he'd just taken in. I believe some woman had brought her into the petstore he worked at, so he just took her home. They were both so sweet!

This was my Charlie, the biggest lovebug you'd ever find! All he ever wanted was snuggles & pets!

And this was my pretty girl Haku (we didn't name her (or Charlie), and just guessed the spelling), we took her in because one of my dad's drivers brought her to the office for one of the receptionists, and at the end of the day she was like, No I don't want it, so the jackass was just going to throw her on the streets of Chicago! >_< So my dad was like Uh NO! and brought her home, and it was a Friday, and by the time Monday came around when my mom wanted to bring her to a shelter I was not about to let her leave! So she made #5 in the house then. And she was so skinny and straggly, her tail literally looked like something out of a cartoon where the cat has single little lines coming off it! We plumped her right up, as you can see ;D and her tail was full and beautiful!

This is my former baby, Quester. She lives with my mom still, back in the States. :)

And that's all I've got on the computer. There were four others. :)

We could probably get away with something small in a cage/tank, but this apartment has the worst insulation ever so I'd worry any little caged critter would be too cold in winter & too hot in summer.
