The most senior US Catholic cardinal is to give a benediction at the Republican National Convention next week in Florida when Mitt Romney accepts the party's presidential nomination.
What do US Catholics think of this? Seems a bit odd to me.

Partiality in political parties? Bad form. Catholic social teaching really spans both liberal and conservative spectrums - e.g., being "conservative" on abortion and "liberal" on social justice and care for the poor.

Apparently, he offered to give the benediction at the Democratic Convention, too, and the offer was declined.
This after the furor amongst conservative Catholics last week after Cardinal Dolan invited both the President and Mitt Romney to speak at the Al Smith Dinner (keeping up a tradition going back decades -- of course, tradition is only good for the conservatives if it corresponds with their current political agenda).
What Cardinal Dolan is doing, to my eyes, is trying to offer a forum for civil dialogue and mutual respect amongst both political halves of the country -- but since it's an election year, every move he makes is bound to piss off one or the other.
